Out of the Blue

Well it seems like it couldn't have been more than a year ago that it was my birthday, but it seems another one has rolled around! A weekend birthday is nice for me, as the slow news flow allows for a relaxing day. And as a present, my football Giants are giving me the chance to see our new QB in action... I just hope that gift doesn't end up putting the young man into the emergency room.

Yeah I agree with tron, except about the plot. It's really fun and the physics are amazing, but like the uncountable number of other sequels out now, it's not bringing a whole lot new to the table. My expectations for a sequel are always lower than an original, so I had no problems with half-life 2. And I'm really excited about what modding/licensing might come out of this game/engine. (Vampire is good, but really only takes advantage of the lip-synching tech as far as I've seen. I can't wait to see something that uses havok in a neat way.)

As far as the plot goes, I could've used just a little more. I'm going to want to play half-life 3 with or without the plot given, so why not just a little more to chew on for the next 6 years? What I'm afraid of is that half-life 3 will ignore any lingering questions we might have about half-life 2.

Oh and happy late birthday Blue. Good job aging.

and as far as FPSs go it's a lot more than most

i disagree... doom3, quake2, dark forces, jedi knight, jedi outcast, jedi academy, medal of honor, unreal2, tron2.0, etc... all these games (and many more) have as much of, if not more of, a plot than HL1 or HL2. what HL2 does better than these other games is: it presents that plot in a way that is extremely intruiging, and very cryptic.

and once again, by playing down to the over-hyped reviews this game gets i'm not saying it's a bad game... in fact it is one of the best and most fun games i have ever played. it simply does not deserve all the credit some people are giving it.

Yeah taht shot is a fake, somebody sent a link around at work awhile back debunking it. The TV in the top corner was just dropped in with a lousy photoshop background. The teletype machine in the front is also photoshopped to cover the large control panel. I think the shot had something to do with a dam or generator.

Happy Birthday Blue! Your ma boy Blue!

You kind of have to wonder why a 'home computer' would need a big wheel, don't you? The whole thing SCREAMS fake, I declare.

And I concur that Half-Life 2 has almost no real concrete background information.. but who cares? There's enough for you to get the gist of what's going on, and as far as FPSs go it's a lot more than most. And regardless of whether HL2's story would make a literary masterpiece or not, it's a hell of a game - the best ever, I say.

No wonder the Weekly World News has the circulation it has.
Weekly World News is hi-larious...
"Japanese jumping up and down to knock world out of orbit!"
With a headline like that (and a request that US readers jump up and down on a certain day to help counteract the effects) how can you not love it?

Yes, that is a maneuvering mockup. From left to right is the Throttle board, where you monitor and control the throttle valve to the main engine. In the middle is the Reactor Plant Control Panel. And on the right is the Electric Plant Control Panel.

Even before I looked it up at Snopes.com I knew it was a fraud. The TV set and terminal in front of the "computer" are NOT from the 50s. There were no dot matrix printers in the 50s, and certainly no LA36 Decwriter ASCII terminals. Television picture tubes that large didn't come until WAY later.

Not to mention that the TV and terminal look so obviously photoshopped it's absurd - the brightness an contrast don't even match.

Then again, there's Snopes to back me up:
http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/hoaxes/computer.asp

It's a prop at the Smithonian showning what a submarine maneuvering room looks like.

Sheesh... information is freely available and yet people fall for this stuff. No wonder the Weekly World News has the circulation it has.

I'll bet that Rand computer concept could run HL2 great and best of all, the Fortran language would make it easy to use!!!!

BTW: HAPPY BIRTHDAY BLUE!!!

i'm guessing the other titles you are referring to are WWII games?

CoD single player has this as well. The best example I can think of is America's Army though which is the most realistic sounding (muffled sound/a heavy monotonous high pitched ringing) and annoying at the same time, true to real life. Surviving a nade that lands next to you with the volume/bass up is nerve wracking as hell.

Happy Birthday Blue. Sorry the Giants couldn't pull one out for you. Their defense seems to be holding up surprisingly well despite the loss of their two tight ends. I didn't watch the game close enough to get a sense of how Eli did but I got the feeling that he played better as the game went on.
