Steam Update - HL2 Troubleshooting

Steam News (thanks Frans) has word of a Steam update that will allow troubleshooting of the cache files for users experiencing problems running Half-Life 2, Half-Life: Source, or Counter-Strike: Source. They also have word on The Half-Life 2 Stuttering Problem: "We're also investigating a solution for the sound skipping problems a small number of users are running into. We'll have a solution for this as soon as possible."

StaTik,

I wouldn't take a '62 bug to an auto race where it's expected to reach speeds of 175 MPH either. Maybe you should play games your rig can handle.

As a side note, I love VW's. I own a 74 bug, an Audi S4 and have had VW's my whole life

After fighting with it for days, I got HL2 to stop crashing right after the intro. Neither the updates or the file verification helped.

I had to go into the BIOS and turn off AGP fast write, reduce AGP from 8x to 4x, set my desktop resolution from 1024*768 to 800*600,and use the Launch Option -heapsize 458752 (only use this heapsize if you have 1gb of memory).

I don't think that all of that is needed so I'll try and remove each step one by one but they seem to add up for other people.

The Steam forums are packed with people who have these problems. They also have a bug which won't let you submit a question or support request to tech support. It just acts like people's login name doesn't exist. They also have more trolls there than I've ever seen just to top it off.

No problems here:

1024x768
No AA, etc.
Mostly medium texture details

2500+
1 GB RAM
5700U 128 MB
NFII onboard sound on DFI Ultra Infinity

I tend to turn the texture resolution down a bit more than others to ensure a higher framerate. I know the gmae looks good. I can't spend enough to make it look AWESOME.

BTW, loving this game, and I don't even have the grav gun yet...

A64 3200, 1.5 gig, Audigy 2 ZS, 9800 Pro 128.

1280 X 1024
4X AA
Trilnear filter
max water effects and sound effects

I had the stuttering problem, set the textures to medium and the problem went away. Hopefully they will fix it soon. Setting the textures to medium does not ruin my gameplay experience in any way.

I'm getting this issue too. At first I thought it might have been my CPU (2800+) not being beefy enough to handle all the physics going on... But texture loading is definitely another possibility. I can't imagine this won't get fixed seeing that I get good framerates the rest of the time.

9600XT, 1 gig ram, AMD 2800+, onboard audio (nForce 2).

ok i´ve tried now the omegedrivers again after the 4.12b with some
hl2-grafiksettings:

i can set all on high.
only texture must set to medium.
AA is set to 4x and AF to 8x
1280x1024 and:
audio=high

it works now much better.

i cant believe it... the frame drops are gone!!! the stutter is better *wow*

if i set textures again to high all= framedrops and more stutter! in any resoltion or window/fullscreen mode.

now it looks for me like i said few days ago: its imho a memory problem with the grafikcard... driver or enginecode for the gpus r fault. or to much bandwith with all high textures&audio etc.
plz anyone with a ati x800 or nv gt6800 try my settings with the latest omegadriver
release.

http://www.omegadrivers.net

only set textures of medium, the others can be set on high.

btw: got the same problems with Vampire:Bloodlines too (source engine too)

I have this problem too.
I am currently using an AMD XP 2600+
1 GB ram
9800 All In Wonder ATI card.
An old soundblaster live card.

I was planning on replacing the soundcard, but from what that guy says it isn't the problem. Still want to replace it though.

I had it in the original half-life as well, but much less frequently. It seemed to happen then when it was loading music from the CD, like when the gigantic fish beast jumped up out of the water when you saw it for the first time.

I've had no issues at all with it and my machine is not high end. I do have nvidia soundstorm for sound, if that makes any difference.

I had this very frustrating problem throughout the entire game. I thought it might be because of how fragmented my hard drive is, but after reading that page, I'm not so sure.

edit: Yeah, defragmenting(and I'm talking manually) and reinstalling/downloading didn't help.

I'm wondering how a seeminhly ubiquitous problem like this could have slipped past QA, but I'll refrain from jumping to conclusions. Now its just time to try some of those tweaks.

No sound skipping here.
System:
P4 3.2
1G Ram
9800 Pro 256mb
some sort of live card
headphones

game settings:
1152x8?4
sound and texture quality cranked
4x anti-aliasing
one of the middle anisotropic filtering settings.

edit - added game settings
edit2 - come to think of it. this did happen once. I had teamspeak, bittorent, and firefox open and running in the background. I kept tabbing out of the game as well.

I've got a 6800GT (256 meg), so there's no way in hell I'm lowering texture quality!

And both my machine and my friend's have the problem. At first I assumed it was sound, but he's got a Live card and I run Turtle Beach. So I don't think it's that (unless it's a specific directsound call).

One time I noticed it right as I moved the mouse to the right (looking around outside the train station), so that may lend to the theory of loading textures...

Hope it gets fixed. One of the few blemishes on an otherwise amazing game...

Given that you're seemingly in a minority (as compared to gamers I've spoken to), would you mind posting your system config and how high you have the texture and sound quality?

It seems to affect people with higher-end machines more than those with mid-range and low-end machines, or rather those running at high detail more than those running at lower detail, which makes a lot of sense as going from low texture resolution to high texture resolution increases the texture loading by a factor of 16 (if my assumptions are correct), which would be in line with the theories posted on that website.
