SWAT 4 Delay

The Vivendi Universal Games Store now offers 10/17/05 as a new release date for SWAT 4, the police shooter sequel previously expected in first quarter of 2005. The information is accompanied by the warning: "Pricing and release date are estimates and subject to change." Thanks SWAT 4.fr. Update: VU Games clarifies that the date change was in error, and the release date has been revised to now read 4/5/2005.

And your reason for thinking that Valve's proprietary 'Steam' system would be connected with a game that has nothing to do with Valve is...?

Vivendi Universal Game is the developer that's why!!!

They really should make a new Police Quest (the old style) with updated technology - it could be an amazing game, with one central storyline and lots of branching quests to do.

Swat3 was a great single player game but the multiplayer was shit. Not because it wasn't fun but because it took so damned long to join, load up, and get into a multiplayer game. Then some asshole TKer would shoot you and end the game in five to ten seconds. It then took three to five minutes to get back into another game. Yeah, it was the worst game-server browser until a few recent classics like Full Spectrum Warrior and Star Wars Battlefront came along with the worst GameSpy browsers ever created. Why can't all future developers just copy Joint Ops server browser... that one is the shit! Best ever nothing else even comes close.

Anyway Swat3 single player was and is still one of the best tactical shooters only a few of the Tom Clancy games even come close. But Swat3 had such realistic bullet penetration, where you could actually shoot somebody through a sheetrock wall and take them down. All other games... sheetrock may as well be two feet of steel because nothing gets through.

I followed Swat4: Urban Justice for about two years and was hoping to see a game similar if not better then Swat3. When it totally dropped from the radar I figured all hope was lost...

Yep--date is Spring time now!!!
However, if STEAM is used with this game, I will have nothing to do with it after the HL2 mess, even if it was released tomorrow!!!!!

This listing was incorrect. SWAT 4 has not slipped, the store just made a booboo.

It's still scheduled for April 2005.

So what we can actually exepct is that SWAT4 will be a Thanksgiving release to coincide with the beginning of Christmas shopping season... and then it will be delayed to Q1 2006 so it doesn't "get lost in the holiday shuffle".

Swat 3: Elite Edition is totally kickass.

Agreed. This game was farily ahead of its time, even though it wasn't really puhing the boundaries of available technology, they just did it well.

Looking forward to SWAT 4.

I would be happy to see this game dealyed if they changed to the Source engine... but I doubt that will happen.

Really though, I don't see the point in release dates anymore. Id's classic statement of "when its done" holds true for anything, and if a game developer wants to issue a release date early in the development cycle, they should by default add 8 quarters to it- that way, it will almost always be either "on time" or even early.

These days, if a game is good, I'll buy it/download it/try it, whatever.
The game has to be truthfully shitty for me not to care about it.
A company can't piss me off any longer...
I see that now that Valve has done what they've done.
I'm still alright with the whole thing, about Steam and DNF.
Why? Because Halflife 2 is still a good game and who knows... we haven't seen any recent screenshots or movie caps of DNF in ... six/seven years (give or take) so chances are the production has seen some quality creations.

True the technology is probably way behind the times, but why would the character models be outdated? The textures? If you look at 1999's screenshots, the texture work is top notch, they're simply missing the bells and whistles applied to today's games (eg: spec, normal and reflect maps)

DNF probably won't have the sweet spatial effects of FEAR either... which is too bad because I think DNF would really benefit from that sort of effect.
Provided it ever actually gets made.
DNF that is.

Ah yes, the good old point-and-click days.

Since this is just as related as kings quest was to policequest:

Days of the Tentacle 4 TEH WIN!!! I remember getting the CD version, struggling to get the voices to work... but when I did, plus got my AWE32 working.. Oh boy. Let's move out, commando-style!

And wtf happened to Sam 'n Max2?!`! Fucking managment..

I know you all loathe Steam, but it seems like a good idea to me - more money to the developers, hence more games with a lower ROI percentage will come out (I HOPE!).. Unless they have to pay huge amounts to use the deliverysystem..

Come on Autumn Mooon Entertainment! Don't let us down with A Vampire Story!

Harr, harr; I was making an exaggerated joke about the development cycle (hell?) of the current post-Swat 3 Swat game. I did enjoy Swat 3 quite a bit and was actively interested in the next game, but things have dragged on quite a bit with the variou delays, redesigns, and change of hands.

I do have some faith in the current developer, hence my appreciation for the delay, but I am quite skeptical at this point.

Uh, you have to count the cancelled Urban Justice to even reach "four versions ago". I guess "Police Quest: SWAT" really didn't agree with you...

> This is probably a good move.
> With F.E.A.R coming out next spring there is no need to rush swat.

That statement makes no sense to me whatsoever. Aside from both using first-person perspectives and guns, I can't even think of a connection between the two games! One's a slow-paced squad-based tactical shooter/SWAT sim, and the other is an all-out action/horror game. How the release of one would affect the other is beyond me.

I agree the delay is a good thing, though. I read a recent preview article in a magazine (take the 3-month magazine lead time into account, of course) that suggested the A.I. was still heavily in development, and the A.I. is simply *critical* to this game. SWAT 3 was entirely decent in this regard, but there's plenty of room for improvement, and it's the area I'd want to see executed superbly more than anything else. New graphics are nice and all, but if the A.I. isn't better I'd just as soon stick with the previous version. An extra six months or so should really let them get this side of things nailed down.
