Half-Life 2 Linux Support

TransGaming Technologies (thanks Voodoo Extreme and Half-Life Fallout) announces plans to support Half-Life 2 in the upcoming version 4.2 of Cedega, their Windows/Linux gaming portability program, planned for release on December 7. The announcement goes on to offer the obvious reassurance that Cedega 4.2 will run Steam as well.

You're certainly right that Linux is far from being a viable replacement for Windows in the gaming department - and that things aren't likely to change anytime soon. 'Chicken and egg' type of problem, as far as publisher interest goes.

Then again, the titles that are available natively right now are among the best in their respective genres - Neverwinter Nights, Doom 3, all of the Unreal Tournaments, etc. Depending on your needs, that may be sufficient to satisfy your gaming appetite.

Despite of what many of the linux enthusiasts want to, the reality is that linux as it's whole is not ready to replace the gamers OS at all, it's still a long way.

To make matters worse, game support will probably the last kind of support (fully) gained in the linux community. Purely because of the massive reliance on the latest hardware and drivers.

But my hope is it will change, as linux has proved it's worth as a far more superior game server platform.

What transgaming does is excellent, but it still comes down to not having native support. The real acceptance should still come from the industry itself.

Thanks for the tip.

And really big thanks to TransGaming Technologies! They make it appealing for gamers to switch over to Linux.

Most PC games work great through Linux with Cedega! Try it out.

It's easy enough to startup without the 3d menu screen.

In your HL2/cfg folder edit Valve.rc
Remove the last line or comment it out.

// display the startup level
// startupmenu

Many intentionally designed security features are fucking problems if they get in the way of people enjoying their game. That they paid for. But, yeah, wrong thread.

Woo yeah, let's whine at Valve for not fixing our problems (one of which isn't a problem at all, but is in fact an intentionally designed security feature) in a thread about a company in no way associated with Valve!

Yay!

As Bucky point out: Wrong thread, but:

How about a patch that removes the long load times for a dumb 3d load screen?

How about a patch for removing dumb internet connection for single player games?

Going straight to the load screen (w/o loading up the 3d intro screen) would be cool for HL2...

As far as internet connection for SP? I've had Steam online ONE TIME since Tuesday (and that was only because I was checking email when I fired Steam up to play - I was in no way REQUIRED), and have played HL2 a number of times in offline mode.

How about a fucking patch to fix freezes that occur with stuttering Audio!

It should be noted that this project is in no way associated with VALVe, nor with the 'fucking' patch that you seem to yearn for so dearly.
