DN3D still had some of the most entertaining DM maps.


Lots of little nooks and crannies, stupid hiding places with one-way walls, apartments full of ammo facing each other to blast into, cameras to watch the other guy desperately try to taunt you...

So much fun. Rat Race (or whatever the subway level was,) Movie Set, The Dark Side, etc. Endless fun.

If they're hitting message boards in an attempt to get ideas for a game which has been in development for 7 years (or is it more?).. they're in trouble.

The game has been in development for years. They must have gone through a gazillion ideas... I can't believe that they are still looking for idea feedback.

I think that that it is so late in the game that they are really afraid to release anything for fear that they won't get their Duke game right after all these years.

How focused can you be, and how confident can you be in your product, after reworking it for so many years? I'm sure that at this point they don't really know what the gamers want from Duke anymore... and that's why they're fishing for little ideas.

It is impossible to make the ultimate game. They are going to disappoint a bunch of people no matter what they produce. So what? Move on and create the next game. The longer you act like your seeking perfection, the more expectations you create and the less forgiving your audience will be.

To see if we could get anything else on this story, we contacted representatives of publisher Rockstar Games (who has the rights to Duke) to see if there were any official comments regarding the progress of the game. Unfortunately, there were none to give.

Rockstar Games owns the rights to Duke Nukem? I seem to have missed when that happened. Anyone want to fill me in?

I'll tell you what he's babling about... NOTHING. Every single game that he said Duke would be "out the door" before(Unreal 2, Doom 3, HL2) have now come and gone and he's still sitting there with no game, no screenshots, no clue. He still insists that this is going to be the be all, end all, of video games. He's going to have to work a miracle to raise the bar over HL2.

3DRealms shoulda done what Blizzard did with the Warcraft adventure game - come out and say the game was not shaping up to be fun so we are not releasing it, wait a few years and declare they are going to make a MMORPG out of it instead and wait for all the gerbils to sign up on the treadmill

No need to apolgise Ray, I'd love to see a true sequel to the original Duke 3D as well but I guess it was just too much to ask that they finish before I die.
As for the survey put out by that media watchdog group, gee maybe they didn't respond because they figured you would take anything they said and twist it to suit your own agenda? It's clear that the National Institue on Media and the Family is not just an unbiased third party doing research but an organization with an axe to grind.

And i hate to say this, but HL2 source engine would make one HELLUVA DNF game, omg that would be the antidote it needs for sure

Yeah, if they are asking for scripted event ideas now, that means the game designers are still building and populating the levels. I'd say at least a year away or more.

The other thing, after Doom 3 and Half Life 2, they are probably having to rebuild their engine again, and re-do all their models. A big undertaking.

Could it be any more obvious from that article and the quoted words that even 3DR are completely tired of the game, uninspired by it, disinterested, and just sick of this whole fiasco? I don't know which would be more entertaining - that the biggest joke in the gaming industry NOT be released (for obvious reasons), or BE released so that it can speak for itself, ultimately.

• That is an old screenshot. Granted, it is from the "current" batch of screenshots, but it is still ridiculously old.

• I do want to see an update to Duke Nukem 3D. To this day, I still have yet to play any one game that is as funny, unique, varied, and over the top. However, the various versions of Duke Nukem Forever are repeatedly overshadowed by developers that are making brand new game and releasing them.

• In a sense, I am sick and tired of DNF, primarily because of 3D Realms itself. For the past few years, the message has really been fans/customers are stupid idiots and all other games/developers suck compared to 3D Realms. Now, I am a die-hard Duke Nukem fan and think 3D Realms has some (at least the few that have not left?) talent, but even I think the company is acting like a total jerk.

• I know, I know, I am a total asshole and idiot for even daring to like Duke Nukem, but maybe 3DR can lower itself to giving its fans stupid idiots an update? Will this industry ever give up its political suspense and just give an informal update?

Doesn't it seem like these guys release news to ride the coattails of other games.

HL2 was ready for release and every game under the sun was in production or almost finished or met some deadline or had a screenshot to release.

Duke Nukem. What can you say? If they are now looking for ideas for scripted events, that is at least another year or two before release.

I hope it looks better than in that screenshot.
