Out of the Blue [Nov 18, 2004, 09:31 am ET] – Share – Viewing Comments
I know a lot of people are completing Half-Life 2 in a single diaper-clad
marathon, but I am one to savor these things, so I am playing in more moderate
stretches. One of the things that helps with that is being easily distracted....
I decided to see what Half-Life: Source looks like, and quickly transitioned to
being analytical about the Source translation of the game, to enjoying the
nostalgia of the renewed experience, to being caught up in gameplay. I ended up
playing well past the resonance cascade (I still cracked up when Barney
mutterered about wanting to get his hands on the guy responsible for this), and
now have a saved game to go back to. It certainly reinforces my feelings about
game design... even with the Source-engine enhancements, a lot of the visuals
inspire a "wow, was this really old school state-of-the-art?" kind of reaction,
but as the bard said, the play's the thing, and the play is still fresh today.

It's funny how that works. Upon release, I played HL2 until I got the handgun then logged out and noticed HL; Source in the menu and proceeded to download that and started playing immediately...
It still holds up as a great game, it's just graphics deprived. I don't think I'll finish it again, as I'd already completed the original twice and could pretty well play the lead role nowadays... lol The end of OpFor left us believing Corporal Arian Shepard had a future and Valve better make that happen... I thought OpFor was better than Half Life;P

Yes Ray, it uses the updated models. And yes, I'd buy from Steam again without a doubt. I don't like the offline modes functionality, but the system worked flawlessly for me and gave me no grief at all. Plus, on top of that, Valve had my Gold Pack out in Australia the day after release. Can't ask for better service than that imo.
