WoW Open Beta Ending

The World of Warcraft Community Site has news that the open beta testing of World of Warcraft will end tomorrow (thanks WorldofWar.net), in preparation for the imminent retail launch of the MMORPG. Word is: "Please note that this does not affect the ongoing European closed beta test. Further details regarding our plans for the closed and final beta tests in Europe will be announced on the European community sites next week."

Lag: Well, it is a *STRESS* test. You know, where they try and overload the server to see where it breaks and how? What kind of fucking moron are you if you're playing a STRESS test and complaining that it's laggy? Make note of it, to be sure, but bitching and moaning about lag in a STRESS test is like crying because your poop is brown.

Character Wipes: I think it's a good idea. I think if you don't, you're opening yourself up to a lot of headaches, just from a technical standpoint. It clears up any possibly invalid or bugged items. Starts everyone on a level playing field. And, last but not least, it's a fucking beta. If you have any expectation of keeping anything you're an idiot. Short of the devs saying "Yes, xyz (being you, some people, or everyone) will be able to keep abc (character, items, whatever) guarenteed or your money back." you should expect that all "work" you put in to the game to be lost at ship. Complaining otherwise just demonstrates that you are a freeloading dick that just want to play games for free. I see that a lot. People get in to betas not to help with the quality of the game but just to have a free game. People like that can suck down razor blades and let someone who will actually give back to the game their beta codes.

I think it depended on which server you played on. The guys on 7 were all pretty cool, horde and alliance. I remember these 3 horde guys that would raid the same farm over and over every day. It got to be a kind of ritual, and yet they were all pretty funny about it, dancing with the dead npc's, applauding our attacks, etc...

Anyone who played the beta noticed how much different the people were on each alliance/race side?
While I got help and friendly responses everytime on the undead side, as human I would get flamed for even asking something.
Thats something really creepy.

I played the Open Beta. I had no intention of buying the game after still suffering from EQ Burnout from a couple years ago.

But WoW surprised me. A lot! I didn't expect to enjoy it so much. I've actually pre-ordered a CE copy and a regular copy for my wife (who loved the Open Beta too).

Not to mention the fact that there were hints that closed beta testers would have the option to keep 1 character from the beta, but again, just hints. Don't get all self righteous or anything, its just a friggin game.

"Go buy a clue please "
I thought we stopped living in the 80s, shithead.

"MMORPG's ALWAYS wipe characters...ALWAYS. I couldnt even believe some idiots went to level 40 in beta just to do that shit all over again, then bitch about it when they found out (GASP!) that the characters are always wiped at the end of a beta "
I guess both Lineage 2 and Planetside would prove you wrong, then, wouldn't it?

"Exitium: You are a retard. Please, yes, move on to another game and do us all a favor. BETAS ARE FOR NERFING you shithead. Its not the full game what did you expect? You act like Blizzard owes you the right to not fix their own fucking game in Beta. "
You're missing the point, stillmind. The point that I was trying to make was World of Warcraft is just another shitty Everquest clone with crappier graphics than anything else new on the market. I'm sure just pasting the Blizzard logo on the front is going to sell a lot of copies up front but once people discover the 'true nature' of the game they'll likely stop their subscriptions unless they're too fucking addicted to what ever shitty level 40+ character they've managed to make for themselves by devoting months to some virtual lifestyle while neglecting their responsibilities to real life.

Enjoy your shitty MMORPG. I'd rather not play a game with so many 'hooks' and 'timesinks' and go with a game that offers me entertainment up front without forcing me to dedicate weeks of my life to building some shitfaced character just so I can indulge myself in the lacklustre PVP that graces the World of Warcraft. I'd rather be playing games like Half Life 2, Bloodlines or Guild Wars instead of wasting my time on this heap of garbage.

Have a nice life.

I would also like to add that the "lag" problem has improved over the beta, although still not perfect.

I'm not bitter at all about the character wipe. I was fully expecting it and planning to restart anyway. The only issue I worry about is the overcrowding. During the first week of release, the newbie areas will be overflowing and newb quest spawns will be badly camped. I've seen lots of this during the strees test and open beta. They just didn't make it large enough to acomodate lots of players. It will be an awful experience for new players.

But I will probably be there on release day, crowding in, because I love the game so much. They should call it World of Warcrack.

Wow was fun, but I'm not sure I'm going to be able to put that kind of time into a MMOG again.

Plus I'm really looking forward to getting my monies worth out of HL2 and Bloodlines. That will take probably a month or so right there. Then some HL2 mods will hit.. then some other new games will hit, probably. Then I will have to buy Christmas presents... sooo, I dunno. GuildWars was great fun.

How long have you people been playing video games?

MMORPG's ALWAYS wipe characters...ALWAYS. I couldnt even believe some idiots went to level 40 in beta just to do that shit all over again, then bitch about it when they found out (GASP!) that the characters are always wiped at the end of a beta

Except for Lineage II, and we see how that game went. (sorry if you are Korean, you probably love it)

Exitium: You are a retard. Please, yes, move on to another game and do us all a favor. BETAS ARE FOR NERFING you shithead. Its not the full game what did you expect? You act like Blizzard owes you the right to not fix their own fucking game in Beta.

Lineage 2 had a 30 day head start with the "Open Beta" which wasn't really a beta at all. Most of the bugs had been fixed 6 months before, but they didn't even implement the Korean patch until 2 months after the game went retail. By then, people had found and exploited all of the bugs.

Wrong. Lineage 2 allowed you to keep your characters, and that game is a complete mess.

To date there has NEVER been any MMORPG Beta that has let you keep the characters. To even think you would be able to keep them is absoutly stupid.

And it seems to be a growing trend for people who pre-order to have a 3 day head start but glad WoW didn't do this.

Another crappy title I won't be buying after months of beta testing (I was in since Beta 2) and after witnessing the nerfs of the various characters instead of tweaking the weakest characters (Warlock and Druid) to be on par with the stronger ones. They handled it very, very poorly and I have no intention of playing the retail game. It's one thing to endure nerfs through a free session, but it's completely another to pay for the game on a monthly basis and watch as they nerf the character you worked hard on (and paid) for months. I don't want to be a part of that experience.

I'll just be playing Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines (a real, actual RPG) and Half Life 2 in the meantime, before Guild Wars is released.

give wow about year before its slamed with nerfs..

If you've been following the closed/open beta you would know that they've already "slammed" the game with at least three major nerfs to many of the classes. It's just about where it needs to be, a few minor bug/lag issues aside.

sorry i should have been more clear i ment a year after the retail version...i also wonder about outside hacker attacks on wow to cause lag...they did it on battlenet...at least thats what blizzard says...

(unless, of course, you think a shammy bot stuck to you is "solo")

yes the rouge classes r harder to solo in DAOC but they are also the most rewarding classes to play in RvR...
still a much easyer game to solo in than EQ...didnt mean to make ya cry bro...

I've played the beta for quite a while. The lag issue is something that they knew would happen and they were testing it..which was what the stress test was all about.

Then, from Monday to Today there has been zero lag as I've played. None, nada...anyone that says there is major lag is just spreading FUD for some strange unknown reason.

This game is ready to ship, nuff said. The stuff like battlegrounds and honor system etc will come later. Give it a chance. Anyone that's ever played a MMORPG knows it's never truely "finished" in terms of development.
