Half-Life 2 SDK Soon

The Valve Editing Resource Collective has word that the full Half-Life 2 software development kit is to be released "soon," though a specific date is not mentioned. Word is: "The upcoming release will include Half-Life 2 mapping support and additional sample maps, support for cubemaps, and the mod source code." Thanks Shacknews.

Valve should not be allowed to use the word "Soon" any longer. Soon was how long it was until HL2 is Out. Soon was how long until Team Fortress 2 is out... Soon Soon Soon... Just say.. "Don't hold your breath kiddo"

kthx

word that the full Half-Life 2 is to be released

I thought I already had the full HL2? Unless they are planning the add-on or (I hope) Half Life 2 Death Match

"Please try again later.." or in other words, "F**K off" you cant play the game you paid for right now, tough!....

I had no problems pre-loading HL2, or playng it until today..then this BS happens, so this is how its gonna be?? I tried to get the "offline" mode to work but could'nt, in fact when I disconnected my network cable to try it, it somehow jacked my account and could'nt remember me when I tried to reconnect.
Half Life2 is marred by this B$........I was enjoying it so much till now, so now I gotta wait till a few million other geeks sign off so I can play my own game..thanks...

It's bizarre to me that you stupid fuckfaces are mocking Valve for HL2. They didn't announce the game until about 2, 2.5 years ago. Compared to some games that are announced 3-4 years in advance and are either canceled entirely or not ever delivered (I think we all know who we're talking about here), Valve is WAY ahead of everyone else.

Only goes to show that bored idiots will bitch about anything.

Its the best game I've ever played. I really AM sorry for all the people who are experiencing these issues...it sucks to not be able to play, especially when you've paid 60 bucks or more...

But the truth is that you're only showing immaturity by starting to insult Valve. Somethings just screw up. I guarantee you if you are patient, that when you finally can play the game it will instantly be in the top three games you've ever played. Its that good.

I don't understand how people can be so harsh and relentless at cussing out Valve when the only reason they're so passionate is because they REALLY, REALLY wanna play the game Valve made.

So just be patient. They're trying their best to get it to work.

And YES, it IS easier for me to say all this because I've already played the damn game, but the truth is I wouldn't have been stressing much even if I couldn't...I was one of the people who upgraded last year in anticipation of september 30th, so I kinda know how it feels to be somewhat shafted.

Just don't give up on the game...when you play it...you'll see...

I suppose if you're having problems with steam for single player you could always download and run the piece of software 'available' that lets you play without steam. I mean you DID pay for the game so I don't think it would be illegal. I think it would be a tough sell for Valve to complain about someone modifying their installation to play without steam if they were unable to play otherwise. But what do I know?

Loving HL2. Easily GOTY. And I can't wait to see what the community does with the SDK. I know that people are gonna make some really great mods out there...

To clarify:

They released part of the SDK (basic mapping and basic animation support) two weeks ago. Now that we have the assets from HL2 decrypted we can make new maps and models RIGHT NOW. They are preparing to release the more complicated map editing tools and, most importantly, the source code that will allow for mods. Understand? Good. I'm going to go back and replay on hard with uberphysics turned (I love splatting people with thrown objects now, such fun!)

I had problems with steam last night so played a couple hours of WoW, tried again, got in. Well worth it!

Great game!! Opening chapter is terrific, amazing story so far, love the graphics, love the physics, love the scenery and atmosphere.

It's not without its disappointments: Steam. I've never had an issue with it until these last 2 days, but I can't stop thinking how pathetic it is that I've paid for a game, installed it, but can't play. Long load times; definitely not an improvement on the original in this aspect ;). Only ships with CS as the MP component. No CD case!

I've also started getting pauses with "mini" sound loops once I hit the water buggy levels. Anybody else get this?

Try lowering the texture detail from high to medium, or even low. Solved the problem for me

To get offline mode to work, you have to have 'remember password' checked, and you have to log into Steam at least once successfully once it's checked. Why? Hell if I know. Talk to Valve.

I suspect that the number of HL2 mods will soon outstrip any Doom 3 mods (are there any?). You heard it here first.

The reason for this is the "remember password" option implies that anyone who uses your computer is free to use your Steam account. If this is *not* checked, then Steam will not allow others to use your account, online or not. Because there is no way to "authorize" a user offline, Valve could have either allowed everyone to use your account offline, or no one. Because leaving the "remember password" option unchecked implies you do not want everyone at the computer to be able to access your account, it makes sense to allow no one to do so.

Does anyone know if it will be possible to download and use the SDK and all of the mapping utils from Steam while only owning the retail version of the game? Or is the SDK and mapping utils only available to people who purchase the game through Steam?

(I would try to figure this out myself, but I don't see the SDK listed anywhere on Steam)
