Yeah great, now they need to fix another problem and thats the sound bug, which makes the game unplayable for most people.

Please try again in a few hours."

Preload usually means you do it before the day it comes out.

They've got 14 terrabytes of bandwidth, or something ridiculous like that. Disconnect and reconnect?

This doesn't make any sense at all. I still have to play while connected online to Steam, and offline mode just boots me out telling me that HL2 isn't ready to be played in offline mode.

So if I'm just supposed to wait, why isn't there any box telling me what my verification status is? And exactly how are they going to activate offline mode on my copy of HL2? Send it to me over steam when I log on or something? I'm really heartbroken. I LOVE this game (I'm battling the chopper in the level with the river) but having to come online to play it feels so...dirty. Like Valve thinks I'm a pirate.

Heh, I buy the guide, the game, and a new graphics card for this, amounting to a total over 500 bucks, and they think I'm a thief.

Give it two weeks, the FBI will be staking out my house.

I still get the "cannot contact the steam servers. try again later". This better fucking work tomorrow when I get home from work. I'm losing sleep over waiting.

Ready to play in 130 minutes??? Nov 16, 2004, 23:00
Nov 16, 2004, 23:00

I just installed the five-CD game, and now it seems to be downloading MORE stuff, telling me: "Updating Half-Life 2: Ready to play in approximately: 130 minutes 54 seconds."
(it's coming in VERY slowly, sometimes it'll jump up to 131 minutes)

is this normal?? i'm sure the game is great, but i'm not happy about this wait. (or apparent problem)

If you're on a 56K connection it will take a long time. It took me about 90 minutes to install the game because I had to download a heap of stuff (even though I bought the retail version ...). 131 minutes sounds like a lot, but yes, there will be a wait.

This steam stuff sucks shit... I buy my game, load the 5 freaking discs and STILL can't play. And yes, I have all the steam ports opened on my firewall. I am NOT a happy camper (not that I condone camping ya know) Valve should realize that the one of the most anticipated games of the year might just generate a little bandwith with all the steam shit (steaming piles?) they make you go through. I didn't have any of these issues with my Doom3. (smart-ass mode on: or my Halo2

Valzante: Quit whining, and read the FAQ. Right click Steam, hit Monitor, and you can see how far along the download is. A friend and myself were even playing it at the same time, one online, other off.

The game did take its sweetass time installing. Unlocking took at least 30-45 minutes and I'm on a pretty sweet cable system. No errors, though. I can't fault Steam for not fucking up for me...yet.

Oh and the game is very good. Only played 4-5 hours, so that can all change.

Unlocking would be entirely dependant on your CPU. Decryption isn't exactly easy on the processor.

Sponge:

Come on now, you really think I'm that stupid? I've been in this hobby a lot longer then you, I can tell that much.

The game was installed off the DVD, and this is what the "Monitor" part of the steam screen for HL2 looks like:

"Steam is not currently updating any games"

If I go into play games, then right click on HL2's properties, I see the following:

Status: requires update
amount acquired: 100%
Offline mode: not ready yet.

I will whine all I want to, child. I know not having a job and living in mommy's basement works for you, but for everyone else, we like to have a job and a family...which means my 80 bucks for the game, plus 400 for a new Video card and, 35 bucks a month for broadband equals a god given american right to "whine", as you so eloquently put it.

I didn't even preload, so that wouldn't even apply to me. I bought the DVD collectors version. I got as far as the DC key screen and it gave me a "We cant process this now, we'll inform you later, until then play retial HL2"

Oh wait, it's too much for your tiny brain to comprehend! If only your cranium was as big as your man boobs.

BTW, your left hand doesn't count as "An other friend" sponge.
