Steam News (thanks Frans) follows up on the story below this one announcing that Half-Life 2 authentication issues have been solved:

We have resolved the issues that caused some to experience delays with Half-Life 2 authentication earlier today. We appreciate your patience and hope everyone enjoys the game.

Three, they are worried about piracy.

Well in my mind they have failed number two already and its only a matter of time for number 3.

Nah, a pirated version is already out from what I've heard. It doesn't require Steam to play.. at least not the SP portion of the game, I dont know about the MP.
