have to say at this point:
We've received a number of reports from people experiencing delays with Half-Life 2 authentication. We are investigating the issue and will update everyone as soon as possible. We appreciate your patience and hope to have everyone in the game very soon.

I don't think most people caught the scene with Gabe clicking his ruby slippers together saying "I wish it was done, I wish it was done". Had to watch closely....

I sincerely hope you just didn't give away the end of the game or Blue's gonna cut your nads off.

The game ends with Auntie Em saying "Wake up, Gordon" and Gordon wakes up and it turns out that it was all just a dream and there was no scarecrow, tinman, or cowardly lion.Either that, or he gave away the first line of the game. I forgot which.
I was on an 8+ mbit university connection. The servers were just slow today.
Problems with Steam? I just can't believe it. Impossible. Could never ever ever happen in a million years!

Oh hell, I've got that beat. From calling EBgames to check availability to "Wake up, Gordon": four hours, 52 minutes. Most mickey mouse game install EVER.
After my 3 hour nighmare unlocking the files, getting timed out on steam, and other such fun activities, it froze up when the game finally started.
It shows the guy with the valve in his eye, then shows a blurry picture of a street corner and sits there for a while. Then the sound starts up but sounds like a broken record and just repeats a short segment over and over. Then my monitor goes black and everything freezes.
I'm a happy customer. Oh yeah.
Yes, all of my drivers are up to date. I even tried the new ATI beta drivers to see if that would fix it. No luck.

We have resolved the issues that caused some to experience delays with Half-Life 2 authentication earlier today. We appreciate your patience and hope everyone enjoys the game.

I pre-loaded mine about a week ago with no problems. Steam downloaded about 4.3GB of data in roughly in hour. What kind of connection do you have? And are you behind a firewall?
I'm on a cable modem at home with a firewall/router and I have several ports open specifically for Steam. Maybe opening some ports will help?
On a side note, I wonder how many people bought HL2 in general, and how many of those purchases were via Steam. Personally, I had no problems whatsoever and will buy from them again.

My is going really slow...like ~350kbps when the university connection I am on is capable of 8000+ kbps !
