Ships Ahoy - Half-Life 2

As noted on Steam News Half-Life 2 is now officially available at retail stores throughout North America. Though Valve's highly anticipated sequel has been available early at some over-caffeinated stores (story), the online activation process is now underway, and copies of the game purchased at stores or online via Steam can now be unlocked by restarting Steam:
Half-Life 2 is available now for purchase and to play. Those who pre-purchased their copy via Steam may access the game by restarting Steam, then double-clicking on the Half-Life 2 icon in their Steam Games directory. To purchase your copy via Steam, get Steam now.

We hope you enjoy it!

Note to self:
In my next life...do not get married, do not have children, do not have a mortgage, and maybe then i won't have to wait till Friday to play HL2.
Do those things after HL2 next time!

My wife is already mad about the amount of time I spend on the computer. I'll probably pick it up today but not play much until the weekend or perhaps Thanksgiving. Which is fine, as I've got plenty to do around the house and a 21-month-old son to play with.

Aside from how cool the game is, I was sitting back thinking to myself this morning "how cool is it that I got the game at 7:30am on the 1st day of its release?" And I didn't even have to drag my ass to 5 different stores only to be told that if I hadn't preordered it that they wouldn't have any copies for 3 days or so.

Very cool... Go Steam! Go Valve!

Furthermore, I'm boycotting Hollywood. Corporate scum, look how scripted their movies are? For the $50 HL2 costs I could buy 3 DVDs, and get 6 hours of worthless, scripted entertainment. Terrible. From now on I only watch free Flash movies! No scripting there!

You idiot, of course there is scripting, show me one game without it. What isn't scripted is the AI. They don't react the same way every time, but the plot will move the same way and the dialogue will be the same. Every fight will be different, though, if you attack it in a different way. With the Combine it will be different even if you do the same thing.

If you expect no scripting you've overhyped the game in your own mind. And, in your twisted thought process, you probably blame Valve. Being a very entertaining game isn't enough, you hyped it enough that if it isn't entirely revolutionary it's not worth it. No fault there aside from your own, yet odds are you blame everyone else for your own faults and think you're superior for refusing to have fun.

Think back to the original HL. Remember scenes like the two scientists getting sucked into the duct? Can't do that without scripting. Remember the zombie bashing through the door? Again, needs scripting.

Scripting is a great thing as it makes the world look real. It's only bad when most attacks on you are scripted, and enemy behaviour is scripted. But when it's external eye-candy to make the world look populated then it's a good thing.

VoodooV isn't a troll, he's right.

Corporate whores! How dare they want to make money! What is this, a capitalist society?

From now on I only play free, non corporate games. There are plenty of Breakout/Snood clones out there for me to play. You corporate whores and your "linear" games, bah! There's nothing linear about free Snood clones, unlike all those corporate games that have a plot!

I think his point is that you were MADE to want it BECAUSE you are corporate-whipped. I don't think that's such a baseless argument personally, I think it's fairly interesting and is not really flaming/trolling.

I like how you conveniently left out the part where I responed to "how do you like being Valve's bitch?"

And anyways, how the F do you know I was MADE to want this game? Guess it has nothing to do with playing the original and liking it, huh? Have you never seen a movie the day it was released? Do you watch TV every day? Guess you are corporate whipped by that too, and your PC, and your refrigerator as well. I like how this donkey claims to be non-corporate whipped because they are going to play the game down the road a bit instead of today. F-that! If they are so non-corporate whipped, then how bout not playing the game AT ALL?

No, it's a troll. I mean, really... thinking you're somehow better than others because you choose not to buy a game now rather than later? Please. That's fucking pathetic. The entire tone of the post screams pathetic.

Now THATS trolling

Given that the original poster pretty much started with the ad hominem attacks, what do you really expect? An intelligent discussion?

thats fucking hilarious, everyone having a hissy fit about NOT being able to play it right away when the retailers broke it, now doing a total flip flop and advocating that you must be patient for the unlock.

That's funny...I never complained about not being able to play it yesterday. And I didn't have any issue "unlocking" it. Yes, it took about 5 minutes, but I would assume thats akin to unzipping a 2GB file...some people's harddrives are just faster than others.

you guys are totally corporate-whipped

I guess I don't see how pre-ordering a game and then playing it is being corporate whipped.

I'm sure to play HL2 down the road, but I'll buy it when I say so

The physics enine is outstanding. In the very begining there is a playground with a merry go round. I saw it and wondered, I wonder if I can spin it? Yes. Then, I wondered, Can i pile some trash on it, spin it, and will the inertia make i slide off. Yes. Then I wondered, maybe I should actually play the game so i can get some sleep. Yes.
