H-L 2 Start-up Bug?

Valve's Erik Johnson made a post about a start-up bug on Shacknews. Thanks Frans:
For people that are running into the bug on startup that looks like:

"Map Version is 0, expecting 19"

Try this to see if it works:

1. Go into your \Steam\SteamApps folder.
2. Rename the file called sourcemodels.gcf to something else.
3. Relaunch the game.

This is going to require a redownload of this file, but if you want to get playing tonight it's probably the best path. There are a couple of people now that were in this situation that were fixed this way.

As soon as we possible we'll release a fix for this that will not require this workaround.

Please let me know if this does or does not fix this specific problem for you. Just shoot me an e-mail at erik@valvesoftware.com. If this does fix it, it would be useful to get copies of a couple of the renamed (bad) cache files.

I really wish I was having your luck. My G-Man at the beginning is a polygon mesh and all my npc's are invisible with only their wire mesh faces visible..... grrrr. Tried a lot of different ways to try fixing this but it just appears to be on their end.

If anyone here has these problems and fixes them, please post solutions here. Thanks.

Cue more Valve bashing?

Seriously though, I feel sorry for the folks having this problem. My experiences have been bug free (so far :)). My advice to you is to wait until this is fixed so that you can truly enjoy this game - it is worth it!

I ran into another error, got frustrated, and played Bloodlines for a bit. Came back, noticed this fix mentioned at HLFallout, and moved/redownloaded (figured it couldn't hurt, I can't play at all as it is). Played a bit more Bloodlines. Finally got to play HL2, after six hours of waiting. I'm glad that there is a fix, but it was really frustrating, after all that ancicipation, and then not being able to play. Hopefully they'll find what's causing the error and put out a small patch, rather than making anyone else redownload.

Validation? Nov 16, 2004, 09:59

Could someone please tell me - for sure - to play the Single Player game - what do I need to have concerning Steam, etc?

When you install do you just need to verify once (like XP) or do you have to always be connected to Steam? Do you need to download and install the full Steam package? Do you get it with the game itself or do I need to download it?

Any help would be appreciated. I am broadband challenged (56k) and would like to know what I am in for.

Thanks.

Since you have dial up, buy the game retail. INstall it, go online and activate it (I assume the Steam application will be installed along with your HL2 install). It will take some time, so be patient (not because it is downloading a lot of stuff, but because it is decrypting the files on you HDD, which takes time). Once your copy is authenticated over steam, right-click on your HL2 game and go to properties, and enable HL to be played in off-line mode.

You should be set. Post over here if you have any questions or problems.

Thank you. I bought the retail version (should be in the mail today).

One final question - once the game is installed and activated (like you mentioned), does Steam need to remain installed or can it be removed?

Thanks for all the info.

No, Steam stays - that is how you access Valve's games. But it's not a big deal - just put it in off line mode and you are good to go.

Thanks again. I was just confused why I would have to "access Valve's games" if I was playing offline and single player only.

Thanks.

All your older Valve games (Half Life 1, Counterstrike, Opposing Force, etc) get automatically incorporated in to Steam, should you install them.

However, if all you have is Half Life 2 installed, you can access that directly though the HL2 executable. Look for it in your Steam apps folder - will be easier to understand once you get and install the game.

Or, anything installed on Steam, you can right click on it (in Steam) and Create Desktop Shorcut.

Well, yeah, you could do that. But what's the fun in that?

Seriously though - I hate cluttering up my desktop - only thing I have is the recycle bin - otherwise its clean.

Same here - put it in your Taskbar - that's where I put my links for the stuff I use (at home - the work computer has shortcuts in case someone else uses it).

I'd just like to make fun of Xero for his idiotic rantings. The fanboy style Tarantino quote at the bottom is the icing on the cake of your juvenility, Xero!

I'm GLAD you can't run HL2, hahah! Bitch! I've played an hour of it already, and you haven't seen shit! Eat shit and die twice!

I'm getting a different error message during install on disk 4 about not being able to find a file and then install terminates with a fatal error. Anyone else getting this? I took it back and got another copy from the store, but it does the same thing.

official Erik Johnson bug on startup..
steam errors...
another bug on startup...
more steam errors...
still another bug on startup...

and people wonder why some of us wait 2 weeks before buying ANY new games.
Today's publishers couldn't release a bug free game if their Yachts depended on it.
