H-L 2 Start-up Bug?

Valve's Erik Johnson made a post about a start-up bug on Shacknews. Thanks Frans:
For people that are running into the bug on startup that looks like:

"Map Version is 0, expecting 19"

Try this to see if it works:

1. Go into your \Steam\SteamApps folder.
2. Rename the file called sourcemodels.gcf to something else.
3. Relaunch the game.

This is going to require a redownload of this file, but if you want to get playing tonight it's probably the best path. There are a couple of people now that were in this situation that were fixed this way.

As soon as we possible we'll release a fix for this that will not require this workaround.

Please let me know if this does or does not fix this specific problem for you. Just shoot me an e-mail at erik@valvesoftware.com. If this does fix it, it would be useful to get copies of a couple of the renamed (bad) cache files.

Aha! Yes, that's exactly what I did, so I'll give it a try with installing CS as well and see if that works...

Antonye, did you uncheck the install counterstrike source option at the beginning of the install? I did, and I got the same error message you did. I tried a re-install and left all the options as their default, and that worked. Then I just deleted counterstrike source from the menu. I hope that helps.

#21. I think it's just a random error. It doesn't mean anything serious. Cause after a bunch of trying to login, I finally got in. It did everything right. Now I'm in and playing. Great game. Counter Strike Source is real nice. Haven't tried Half Life 1 Source yet. I was just angry for the moment. Valve is cool. I was just fusturated at the time since no other new game you buy has this much trouble just to play it. Now were all cool accept that faggot that replied to my anger trying to act cool. He's still a loser. Anyway. Great game, good luck trying to get it work if you still having problems. I'm off to play some more. Cheers!
P.S. Runs flawless on my pimped out rig with everything maxed out.

Actually, I am having the same winsocket problem.

Instead of people spewing their elitist crap, maybe they should try helping out.

I'd really like to play this game, and HELP is appreciated.

official Erik Johnson bug on startup..
steam errors...
another bug on startup...
more steam errors...
still another bug on startup...

and people wonder why some of us wait 2 weeks before buying ANY new games.
Today's publishers couldn't release a bug free game if their Yachts depended on it.

I'm getting a different error message during install on disk 4 about not being able to find a file and then install terminates with a fatal error. Anyone else getting this? I took it back and got another copy from the store, but it does the same thing.

I'd just like to make fun of Xero for his idiotic rantings. The fanboy style Tarantino quote at the bottom is the icing on the cake of your juvenility, Xero!

I'm GLAD you can't run HL2, hahah! Bitch! I've played an hour of it already, and you haven't seen shit! Eat shit and die twice!

Seriously though - I hate cluttering up my desktop - only thing I have is the recycle bin - otherwise its clean.

Same here - put it in your Taskbar - that's where I put my links for the stuff I use (at home - the work computer has shortcuts in case someone else uses it).

Or, anything installed on Steam, you can right click on it (in Steam) and Create Desktop Shorcut

Well, yeah, you could do that. But what's the fun in that?

However, if all you have is Half Life 2 installed, you can access that directly though the HL2 executable. Look for it in your Steam apps folder - will be easier to understand once you get and install the game.

All your older Valve games (Half Life 1, Counterstrike, Opposing Force, etc) get automatically incorporated in to Steam, should you install them.

However, if all you have is Half Life 2 installed, you can access that directly though the HL2 executable. Look for it in your Steam apps folder - will be easier to understand once you get and install the game.

Thanks again. I was just confused why I would have to "access Valve's games" if I was playing offline and single player only.

Thanks.

does Steam need to remain installed or can it be removed

No, Steam stays - that is how you access Valve's games. But it's not a big deal - just put it in off line mode and you are good to go.
