Out of the Blue

Way too long after noticing how cold the weather was getting around here, I noticed that I still hadn't switched the screens for the storm windows all throughout the Blue Tower (and at 175 stories, that's a lot of windows). Anyway, if you are in my area, apologies for the further couple of degrees drop in temperature caused by my ceasing to heat the great outdoors for everyone.

Congrats to our buddy Ant on his new full-time job!

I just finished the airboat level. My god. I haven't had that much fun in a game in years. Simply amazing.

As a side note, this whole airboat (and I'm sure the buggy scene) really shows how dynamic Source is. You could build a whole game around JUST the airboat very easily.

The pre-loading servers were shutoff at 3am also.

I set my pc to stun and went to bed. To get up this am and it says stuck at 19%, then I try and restart it, and it says, "No servers are configured for pre-load, please try again later".

Oh well. Off to work, I will get it on the way home.

Starting problems Nov 16, 2004, 06:38
Nov 16, 2004, 06:38

Erik johnson posted over at Shacknews a workaround for people having trouble with the game starting and then getting an error:

For people that are running into the bug on startup that looks like:

"Map Version is 0, expecting 19"

Try this to see if it works:

1. Go into your \Steam\SteamApps folder.
2. Rename the file called sourcemodels.gcf to something else.
3. Relaunch the game.

This is going to require a redownload of this file, but if you want to get playing tonight it's probably the best path. There are a couple of people now that were in this situation that were fixed this way.

As soon as we possible we'll release a fix for this that will not require this workaround.

Please let me know if this does or does not fix this specific problem for you. Just shoot me an e-mail at erik@valvesoftware.com. If this does fix it, it would be useful to get copies of a couple of the renamed (bad) cache files.

Erik

Aye-ight, I got it up and running. Presumably, it just had to download a bit more stuff - on my ghetto, 26.4 hippy modem, I was stuck at that screen for eight to ten minutes.

Otherwise, I am guessing it is just the card. With a XP3200 (Barton), 1 GB PC3200, and a 6800 GT, it runs wonderfully at 1024x768. The game is playing everything at near maximum with the exception of the water and AA/AF. Here is what it is defaulting to:

Model detail: High
Texture detail: High
4 x Anti-aliasing
8 x Anisotropic filtering
Shader detail: High
Shadow detail: High
Water detail: Reflect World

With initially thinking there was a technical issue, I disabled Powerstrip so my GT is not even running at its normal OC level (just shy of the Ultra level.)

The AA and AF are fine where they are and that leaves only the water setting and the resolution for me to tinker with. It seems to run smoother than Doom 3 did and I ran Doom 3 at 1280x1024 so I will likely play Half-Life 2 in that resolution as well.

Game is amazing. Though it will get out-voted by the larger console crowd, I will say it here and now:

Half-Life 2 - GAME OF THE YEAR!

Same here. It stayed on that wallpaper screen for a long time until that wallpaper became animated with the combine dude started walking around and that camera thingy. Then she was ready to roll:)

Runs fairly smoothly on this machine with everything set to high @ 1024x768. Some of the load screens take a few seconds but nothing hugely long.

Biggest gripe I've got so far is when you're in the apartments and the combine arrive outside. You have that woman and guy looking out the window? I picked up the concrete brick and dropped it on the tv... sorta expected it to break or explode. Just knocks the tv down. So then I grabbed the same brick and dropped it on the woman's head;P No complaint, no get outta my house... no bloody pulped skull falling to the floor.... If this remains the worst negative I can come up with, that will have been an amazing feat;P

my heart weeps for you Ray...truly....

I may need an extra helping of that weeping. For whatever reason, the game is not working for me. I sat through the last download (where you can select cancel, play, play when downloading is complete, etc.), I go to a black screen, the incredibly out of focus picture of the main city comes up on screen, I see the loading icon in the bottom right, and........................that is it.

I have already tried a few different things - disable FRAPS, disable NAV, turn of ZA, reset the adapter to defaults, but nothing seems to change it. Maybe, I guess, it has more downloading to do, but I have received no indication of that and I had the option to play.

Otherwise, EB does not open for another seven hours.

I guess I can run it and just let it sit there, but all I otherwise have to show for HL2 is an out of focus screen...
I hate all of you now!

Edit: Obviously, I only have a wallpaper in place of a game...but I would check out the benchmarks of the 9800. Mind you, the game was originally pimping the 9800xt. Likewise, both the 6800 and x800 series of cards are a significant step above the previous generation, especially with regards to the DX9-level games (FC, D3, HL2, etc.)

Accepting donations of weep,
Ray

few complaints, minor though they are:

1.) Performance is rough. I have 1 gig of Corsair RAM, 2.8 P4 with HT @ 800FSB, 9800 non-pro OC'd to pro speeds. This rig was (almost) the top-o-the-line back when the game was originally supposed to launch. Kinda disappointed here in that aspect.

2) Loading times pull you right out of the immersion this game so powerfully brings you into. Given the amount of time Valve had this shoyuld've been addressed better.

3.) I have a Logitech MX1000 Laser Mouse. The game only recognizes right/left and mouse-wheel. theres still 4 more programmable buttons that I can't utilize. Not sure if its a Logitech thing or its the game.

otherwise the game is just amazing.

fuck hl2

My Steam files have been unlocked and, even on my ghetto 26.4 hippy connection, I will have the final download in less than fifteen minutes.

Why I will not sleep today:

  • Fifteen minutes until the *gold* Steam package finishes.

  • I will still go to EB later in the day to pick up the retail CE of Half-Life 2.

  • When I pick that up, I can pick up Metroid Prime 2: Echoes as well.

Tomorrow is Vampire and Thursday is MGS 3.

Screw you guys bee'yatches, I am going home to play Half-Life 2!

Bit odd, I got the retail HL2 (UK edition on DVD) and so far I've downloaded 11mb, first updating steam then unlocking - I'm about 2/3 through if the progress bar is anything to go by. (ok so that 11mb includes loading Bluesnews, mostly from cache)

I'm impatient enough with ISDN, glad I'm not doing this on 56k! Will all be well worth it tho, for my precioussssss

edit: total's ~15.5mb, all done.
edit#2: actually, not all done... it seems all done, and the steam client even says 'all done' but steam is still hogging the connection?
edit#3: now all done. i estimate it was ~25mb downloaded, BUT you can start playing after that ~15.5mb and leave it downloading in the background.
