Half-Life 2 for Sale?

Valve sends an explanation for why Half-Life 2 is not being activated at this time in spite of the couple reports of it being available at retail already:
Half-Life 2 For Sale?

If you have purchased a copy of Half-Life 2, we are sorry you are still waiting to play. This is not Valve's choice. Vivendi is insisting that the game has not yet been released, and has threatened that Valve would be in violation of its contract if we activate the Half-Life 2 Steam authentication servers at this time.

Thanks for your patience and we will update you when we have more news to share.

"and will need 8 gig."

8 Gig really ? just for HL2 ? Or is that the "Gold" stuff, which i'm not really bothered about. Bronze, simple HL2 will do me.

If 8 gig is just for HL2 that seems like a serious amount for a game, like 4 times as large as any game in the past.

If it really is 8Gig of game content its gonna be a HUGE game ! And does that mean it ships on 11 CD's ? or 2 DVD's ?

"You would most likely get the same error message if ou tried to install through a CD/DVD."

Thats fine, as long as it is telling me how much space I needed, I could have altered my partition sizes to allocate more space on my Games area. But just "more space needed" is not really helpful.

Didn't mean to bash you Viper, it just seemed that your problems were both your and Valve's fault, and I tried to point that out. GL to all of us activating it in ~10 hours. The masses will march on the Valve offices if the servers go down and we can't play.

Heh, I'm not in a bad mood, I have not been on the edge of my chair waiting for HL2 for the last 2 years. Its rdy now, I fancied trying it, so I thought I would give Steam ago to save me a trip the the game shop, and also put my $ straight to the developers if they could deliver me it on time.

Anyway, no flame war intented, just thought I would post my comments on a newbies intro to Steam, and what a real Publishers role in getting that game to the rest of the world as Valve's servers buckle.

Surely I HOPE, though, that when I get home from the shop, the Steam Activation servers are not crippled also, and I must wait to even longer to play the game from the CD.

Sorry Value, u fucked up on Steam, I will happily give my $43 to Vivendi for their distribution system, and you have have the other $7 for writing the software.

Oh, and BTW, you'll still be using Steam. It's apart of the boxed install. After you install, you create an account and auth.

Have fun!

Yes, you're an idiot.
You waited until 12 hours before the release of what is arguably the most anticipated PC game ever to download the entire thing on a delivery system that many many people have had problems with.
So put on a silly hat and dance around wildly because, you guessed it, you're an idiot.

And I'm also an idiot, because, even though I have over 200 Gig of free hard disk space, Steam says I must just "delete some space, as I dont have enough".

You just said you have 3 gig free. Where did you install Steam to? Because that's where it keeps it cache, and will need 8 gig.

My Steam folder is about 8 gig.

And I believe SDOG handled the other point. You remind me of a cousin of mine, who does all her xmas shopping on December 24th, and wonders why it puts her in a bad mood...

I can download 5gig in 12 hours if thats the size of the game, I only expect their content delivery system to work.

Vivendi can supply the demand, but I'm an idiot because Valve cannot supply the demand ?

And I'm also an idiot, because, even though I have over 200 Gig of free hard disk space, Steam says I must just "free some space, as I dont have enough". Seriously, sorry for being an idiot then.

Secondly all the servers are full, and even to the point that the forums are now 50/50, and the home page for www.steampowered.com is twitchy.

Sorry, but you're an absolute idiot for trying to download the game 12 hours before it goes live, when practically EVERYONE who has a copy (I read that steam orders are over 2 million alone) will be connecting. Why not just boycott the game in protest? Get a fucking brain cell or two and think more than 12 hours ahead next time.

Jeez what a fucking joke Steam is. As a completely new users I Tried it today, tempted not to give Vivendi the extra cash but put it toward Valve directly.

Got Steam, started download...

Firstly, I have Steam installed on a disk with 3Gig free.(my Games partition) When I start the download it tells me "not enough disc space free, please free some", but no idea what ? Do i give it 50Gig ? How big is this game.

Secondly all the servers are full, and even to the point that the forums are now 50/50, and the home page for www.steampowered.com is twitchy.

So I cannot download it even if i wanted to, and free up another 10Gig by deleting some other games ?? Mabey i only need to delete 5meg, but I have no idea.

At least the publishers can produce the CD's in millions, and get it to the shops on time, where you can go and buy it instantly.

The excuse "Our Servers are Full" is shit. Why offer the fucking world the online distribution if you havent got the servers to provide it, and with what seems a completely shit download system. I cannot even specify anywhere in the options that, although I have Steam installed on my E:\ drive which is where I will want my HalfLife2 directory, it could use my F:\ drive as temp storage which has about 80Gig free on it.

Sorry Value, u fucked up on Steam, I will happily give my $43 to Vivendi for their distribution system, and you have have the other $7 for writing the software.

twelve and a half hours to go!

I am planning on activating mine sometime around 5:30 am CST - enough time after the initial rush has passed, and enough time before the lazy ones wake up and get on Steam

Went by the local Best Buy yesterday (was there to pick up me copy of Halo 2 and Ninja Gaiden :D), and all those boxes I had reported were now gone. There was now just a large empty space, where the boxes most likely be placed again tomorrow. Looks like they must have had quite a few returns from frustrated customers.

Oh I agree totally. but I think its very two faced to be mad at VU, because if everything went as it should and the retailers hadn't broken the date, they'd still have to wait till tomorrow to play the game anyway.

VU gets shat on either way, I'm no VU-lover, but for christs sake, dislike them for the RIGHT reasons, not because you can't play a game early that you're not supposed to play early had everything gone according to plan in the first place.

stupid fanboi-ism running rampant here. And valve is loving every minute of it. cuz stupid fanbois = more money for valve.

Its for that reason, and that I'm not a fan of steam, that I'm defending VU on this issue.

Hate VU? fine, but hate them fairly, its not like there arent any VALID reasons. But we've got a gamer version of the salem witch trials going on right here.
