Wrong! Again some people miss the point which is that Valve knew about the conditions of this contract all along but they nevertheless promised their fans that HL2 would be unlocked the same second the street date gets broken.
Wasn't this "official announcement' just some dweeb on the Shacknews forum going "my friend of a friend's source at Valve says..."
Seriously, can anyone find an actual quote from Valve on this?

so valve found a loop hole and they exploited it
Okay, first of all, wtf are you talking about a loophole? Valve and Vivindi hashed out a contract that gave valve the rights to online distribution, specificly because NOONE suspected it could even come close to retail, so Vinvindi wasn't losing much and Valve gained a little. Fast forward a few years and it turns out that it's not only viable, it's EXTREMLY viable. IMO, Vivindi doesn't have a leg to stand on.. Why on Earth would Valve want the rights to online distribution if they weren't going to use them? It's noone's fault that it exceeded everyone's expectations once it was actually applied. (Seriously; online distribution in 2001 came nowhere near to what Half-Life 2 has accomplished.. had things still have been like there were then, Vivindi wouldn't even give a crap)

For those people who have seen the retail boxes, do they have sticker or something prominently saying you need an internet connection to activate the game, or that it won't work until the 16th? Seems to me that they shouldn't hide something like Steam in the tiny system requirements font...
Did games that required 3D accelleration have stickers or something like that on the box? Personally, if you don't read the sys requirement, you don't deserve any sympathy. That's like buying a piece of furniture before double-checking to see if it'll fit inside your house.
