Half-Life 2 Early?

Half-Life 2 already in some gamers' hands on GameSpot and Half-Life 2 Out Already? on IGN spread and analyze rumors and reports that Valve's eagerly anticipated shooter sequel may be appearing early on store shelves. The stories outline these sketchy reports, provide links to "rather convincing photographs" of the retail box and media, as well as a reiteration of the fact that even if one had an early copy of the game, they would still need to activate it via Steam anyway.

Does anyone know if they plan to fire up the authentication servers at 12:01am Tuesday morning?

Pacific time zone, yes. That's the plan. But don't be surprised if it gets changed. You know how delays and Valve tend to go hand in hand.

Well I went by the BB in san marcos (TX) and they had the display case w/ copies on it out.

The HL2 box is nothing special. I'd give it a 7/10 only because its hl2.

It was $55 per copy :-/ I guess you can use a $5 off coupon to bring it down to 50 + tax, but this is still really rich for my blood.

Ghandi, which store ?

The store that is across from Willowbrook mall, in the Northwest part of town. I swer, they had a TON on them just sitting there in the games section. I did not bother trying to buy one since I have already purchased the Silver package from Steam. So I do not know if they would have sold me one.

Well, I went by my local BestBuy here in Houston today - they had both regular and special edition boxes out for sale - there were a TON of boxes just sitting out there. Looks like the embargo has been broken.

The piracy protection offered by the validation vastly outweighs any such losses. Most likely by several orders of magnitude.

I wouldn't have bought it from Steam if I didn't have a way to back up. From what I've read, if you backup your ClientRegistry.blob file, and all the .gcf files in the SteamApps directory, you can reinstall steam, restore those files and play offline without having to re-activate. Looks to me like that would be an easy way to pirate the game.

Steam is no real privacy protection. It's only working till the 16th November and after that date warez releases will be widespread like crazy.

What are modem users to do when they get home with that $80 CE box and realize that the extra games they were supposed to get must be downloaded. Broadband isn't available everywhere you know. I haven't seen the retail box, but the description on all the online retailers doesn't mention anywhere that HL1:S will have to be downloaded later. That's pretty lame if you ask me, unless they include a cupon or something to send in to receive a free HL1:S CD when it's ready.

My guess is it will be something like that.

Either they will use coupons, or Steam account settings. Maybe they'll ship for free, or charge like $5.

But I'm sure they realize this.

GOD I hope the Steam(ing pile of shit) falls on it's arse under the weight of demand just so I can come back here and see all the pissy, moany, sookey fanboi posts when they can't get HL2 to authorize.

I realize this post was probably a troll, but I don't see what people's problems are with Steam. It's not that bad, and I have it turned off so it doesn't start with Windows. Since then, I've had 0 problems with it.

Steam offers another way to get the game, and delivers more money to the developers and less or no money to the jerk producers. Take a look at the business, a real long look, and you'll see how producers screw over the developers left and right.

If you don't want it via Steam, then don't get it via Steam. If you're complaining about not being able to back it up, then you need to get a clue: Valve recently added an "archival" ability to Steam. You can now compress the files into CD or DVD sized chunks.

I used to be all about the boxes, but now I could care less about them. I toss them out right away (since I have no room), and I only read manuals for complex games.

Yes, if you don't have broadband, you're screwed. Yes, if you don't have an Internet connection at all, you're screwed. But if you have both, it's great.

Well, 3 out of 4 American homes have internet access. That's 204 million Americans out of 272 million Americans.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_access_in_the_United_States

A standard is the rule. If over 75% of American households have internet, I'd say they're the rule rather than the exception.
