GOD I hope the Steam(ing pile of shit) falls on it's arse under the weight of demand just so I can come back here and see all the pissy, moany, sookey fanboi posts when they can't get HL2 to authorize.
I realize this post was probably a troll, but I don't see what people's problems are with Steam. It's not that bad, and I have it turned off so it doesn't start with Windows. Since then, I've had 0 problems with it.
Steam offers another way to get the game, and delivers more money to the developers and less or no money to the jerk producers. Take a look at the business, a real long look, and you'll see how producers screw over the developers left and right.
If you don't want it via Steam, then don't get it via Steam. If you're complaining about not being able to back it up, then you need to get a clue: Valve recently added an "archival" ability to Steam. You can now compress the files into CD or DVD sized chunks.
I used to be all about the boxes, but now I could care less about them. I toss them out right away (since I have no room), and I only read manuals for complex games.
Yes, if you don't have broadband, you're screwed. Yes, if you don't have an Internet connection at all, you're screwed. But if you have both, it's great.
