Blizzard Entertainment announces the
beginning of the World of Warcraft Open Beta (thanks Ant), though the
World of Community Website seems
to have crumpled under the stress of the news. Word is that: "An initial run of
open beta accounts is now available from
FilePlanet"
(not limited to paid subscribed like the stress test), the wording suggesting
accounts will be available elsewhere eventually. Here's a bit on the beta: "In
preparation for the launch of World of Warcraft, we are now introducing the most
complete version of the game, including a new patch with extensive content,
including racial traits, raids, Hunter and Paladin talents, new quests for
high-end zones, and much more." Update: The client is now also available
on WorldofWarcraft.com and
mirrored on Gamer's Hell.

Do I need to go through FilePlanet to get into the open beta?
FilePlanet does indeed have a role in hosting the open beta, and it has a number of open beta accounts to award. However, the majority of open beta accounts will be distributed by Blizzard directly. Once FilePlanet’s accounts are given away, all further accounts will be awarded only through Blizzard. So, if you visit FilePlanet and are told that no more open beta accounts are available there, please go to www.worldofwarcraft.com to secure your open beta slot.

Yeah, but I'm not bummed about it. I waited a week so I can wait a few more hours. Patience is a virtue :). Besides, I don't have enough time to play tonight anyway with work.

I tried for an hour constantly refreshing with multiple browsers to get through. I got in real early (I had a hunch it would start around 4 EST) and managed to reach the activation image but I kept getting an error message after that. That is until I kept all the letters lower-cased and I got my beta key (woohoo!). Should it matter whether the letters are capitalized or not? Sure seems that way.

If i use IE to try and download the client, i get a network error that keeps repeating itself, can't even get in line.

in the beginning i did get in with the 6 letter picture code... and every time i typed it in, i got an error. so finally after about 100 tries or so, it came back without an error but instead the keys were all gone. gay.
i see no new keys.
Yup, I got in to I guess, now I need to find out how to upgrade the stress test file I got from my mates to the OB suitable??

File planet has more keys, I just got one a few minutes ago. Not that I can do anything with it, since Blizzard's sign up server is producing error logs.
