World of Warcraft Open Beta

Blizzard Entertainment announces the beginning of the World of Warcraft Open Beta (thanks Ant), though the World of Community Website seems to have crumpled under the stress of the news. Word is that: "An initial run of open beta accounts is now available from FilePlanet" (not limited to paid subscribed like the stress test), the wording suggesting accounts will be available elsewhere eventually. Here's a bit on the beta: "In preparation for the launch of World of Warcraft, we are now introducing the most complete version of the game, including a new patch with extensive content, including racial traits, raids, Hunter and Paladin talents, new quests for high-end zones, and much more." Update: The client is now also available on WorldofWarcraft.com and mirrored on Gamer's Hell.

Who cares if the game is gold? There's a patcher. There will be at least one more patch before Nov 23 and, obviously, constant patches after release.

This MMORPG is more complete at its release than just about any other out there.

Guild wars was beyond boring and lacked a key element: fun.

It's funny that you're one of those kids who scream "nerf" when Blizzard implements a "change".

But what do you care, you won't be playing anyway. (yea, right.)

The game is gold. The open beta experience will be the exact same experience you'll get in the retail game, with the exception of having less people around to play with. Any impressions you get from the open beta will be just as they aree when the game comes out. Yes, the game is in a beta state, there is no disputing that. When the game enters retail, it'll be a beta title that was released prematurely.

" level 13 or so after many hours of non stop powerplaying "

sorry but I call bullshit there. any dumbass can hit level 13 in less than a day and with friends even easier.

basing your game buying decision on an Open beta in regards to crashing, lag, instability etc is just plain stupid.
1) it is still a beta, yes there are still odd behavior but if you want a rock solid game right off the bat why the hell are you playing a mmpog?
2) lag in an open beta in possibly one of the most anticipated mmpog in the last 4 years? surprise surprise

either way glad WoW isn't for you, that way I don't have to share a camp with your whiney ass or listen to you moan how the game isn't going your way.

WOW Open Beta Sucks Nov 8, 2004, 23:38

Alright, so I managed to get my friends in after a really huge download which we got off a private FTP (beats FilePlanet's 20kbp/s) and managed to get our characters to level 13 or so after many hours of non stop powerplaying in-between server crashes, bugs and instability, and guess what? They all think that it sucks more than Everquest did at low levels. Being a closed beta player I can pretty much say that most, if not all the classes are terribly imbalanced and that instances are impossible without min/maxed characters due to the apparent nerfing of the warrior's taunt ability (which has a 10 second delay now but the same crappy efficiency). What's worse is how they took out the ability to retrain your talents so if you screw up on one character, you'll likely have to start over again because none of the raid-guilds will accept you as a member otherwise.

Suffice to say, none of us are going to buy this game. We'll just be getting Guild Wars when it comes out next year, instead. At least we all enjoyed the World Preview Event and the subsequent beta test.

I am happy at the amount of testing Blizzard is doing with this game. The funny part is on /. people had list of complaints with this game, all of which are released with the open beta patch. I guess everyone will be happy. Has there been any word on EQ2 players?

There was no key at the end of the signup process

There was for me. At the end of the FilePlanet signup you should have reached the Congrats page that had the key along with the link to download the install from FilePlanet. An email is also sent, which has the same key.

that's for fileplanet, not for the WoW website ...
There was no key at the end of the signup process, only install instructions. I didn't signup with fileplanet because every time I tried, it spat out random errors. Any ideas?

You do get a verification email, but just repeats the information that you get when you sign up. Hopefully you saw your account key at the end of the signup and copied/pasted it somewhere.

FilePlanet suxxors unless you paid them $... way too many errors with their fancy ActiveX control crap. I gave up on them and are using the torrent from the worldofwarcraft.com page. A 30k/sec download is better than no download at all.

That's the part I'm dreading. In the very first stress test I never got an email from Blizzard, only Fileplanet. Luckily back then all I needed was the signup URL from Blizzard.

The thing is, I don't filter any email at all, so without a doubt in my mind it was a problem on Blizzard's part.

I was quickly able to make an account about 30mins ago via the WoW website. Just have to download the client at home now ... Fileplanet was a joke earlier today, getting total random errors and eventually gave up after half an hour ...
