World of Warcraft Open Beta

Blizzard Entertainment announces the beginning of the World of Warcraft Open Beta (thanks Ant), though the World of Community Website seems to have crumpled under the stress of the news. Word is that: "An initial run of open beta accounts is now available from FilePlanet" (not limited to paid subscribed like the stress test), the wording suggesting accounts will be available elsewhere eventually. Here's a bit on the beta: "In preparation for the launch of World of Warcraft, we are now introducing the most complete version of the game, including a new patch with extensive content, including racial traits, raids, Hunter and Paladin talents, new quests for high-end zones, and much more." Update: The client is now also available on WorldofWarcraft.com and mirrored on Gamer's Hell.

Ive played the Wow beta and how can they justify the terrian looking as bad as it does?

Tribes 1 had better terrain, as far as the classes being the same only proves you either dont pay attention or havent played it or are just plain dumb, ever here of the heroic moves?
they can be pulled off manuel or in groups and Wow has nothing like it , it allows you to do custom moves based on certian button presses at key times and you have to be able to have to proper spell to make the comboe work + there are many choices based on what spell you start off with and which one you follow up on,
the combination possibilities are endless, but i know why you havent mentioned it cause you prob didnt notice it or couldnt figure it out in the limited time its been out, either way Ive played A taroun Fighter, Undead mage, Orc shaman..and they all play the same. EQ2 is not like that at all and there are vast differences in character spells once you specialize, Makes me laugh when they had like 20 developers working on this and spent 30 million dollars only to be upstaged by Wow ? ROFLMAF not gonna happen in your lifetime. EQ started this hole MMORPG craze and they will not be upstaged just go read some reviews around the net, that speaks volumes.

here is just a sampling of what a review site had to say::

EverQuest 2 is destined to become the enchanted pinnacle of MMORPG gaming. SOE has listened to the EQ and MMO communities, and as such, started a wonderful game that is aching to become the single best MMORPG on the market. As with ANY MMO game on the market, the game has it's share of broken quests, annoying bugs, and slight balance issues. Overall however, these are few and far between, and represent very little frustration at this stage. I have now played in both the WoW, and EQ2 beta tests, and can honestly say, I will be picking up EQ2. On a final note, this is one of the most beautiful RPG's on the market period, and the immersion quality and potential is immense.

So its not just me it has infected others too LOL.. I just stoped the long download of the new open beta of Wow..who needs it

Who cares if the game is gold? There's a patcher. There will be at least one more patch before Nov 23 and, obviously, constant patches after release.

This MMORPG is more complete at its release than just about any other out there.

Guild wars was beyond boring and lacked a key element: fun.

It's funny that you're one of those kids who scream "nerf" when Blizzard implements a "change".

But what do you care, you won't be playing anyway. (yea, right.)
Constant patches after release? Don't kid yourself. Blizzard's stated repeatedly since the beginning of the beta until now that there will not be constant patches, but rather releases of large patches that don't occur often.

Just because WOW is more complete than any other MMORPG doesn't mean we have to accept it in its current state. After years of development and from Blizzard, nonetheless, one would come to expect something more than an unfinished, buggy, imbalanced product.

I don't know where you get off on calling Guild Wars 'unfun'.

"Change" hah. Tell that to all the warriors who can't tank anymore. What's their purpose now?

Dosent matter cause EVERY web site thats reviewed EQ2 and compared it to Wow said EQ2 is the one to buy?

Now WoW isn't out yet, but IMO EQ2 is going to lose in the battle of reviews, if that's what your argument was based on.

Re: EQ2 less content than WoW Nov 9, 2004, 11:36

The game is balanced on an Archetypal level so that any group with one of
each of the 4 archetypes will perform optimally. As a result there is little
to no difference in any class or subclass. Casters are the worst examples.
The spell lists are almost identical with most of the spells shared ones
anyway. There is no flavour to each sub-class. Between 20 and 45 you may get
two or even three spells that make you different from the other sub-class
and maybe 6 spells that make you different from any other mage. The ones
you do get are usually matched in function by other sub-classes spells and
just have different animations and resist types/stat buff types. The worst
case in point has to be the necromancer.

There are lvl 30+ necros who's best tank pet is the generic summoner beetle
they start getting at lvl 10 and share with the conjurors. For nukes they
are using the lightning bolt line all mages get at level 3. There is SO
little difference between the classes and sub-classes in each archetype that
I honestly couldn't tell you what I'm grouped with sometimes. I just know
there is a healer type, tank, rogue and caster there. The priests are all
the same too with very minor differences. The current spell lists are final
and published and won't change apart from some unecessary fluff spells. As a
lvl 25 wizard I've got two unique wizard spells and all the spells I'll ever
have bar about 4 extra utility ones that don't look terribly insipring.

Most of my spells I'll share with all the other mages anyway. A lot of
abilities have very short durations and little effect so that over the
course of the fast EQ2 fights they do so little that they are not even worth
the casting time, let alone the power cost. The small effects get consumed
by and lost within the massive variance I mentioned earlier anyway.

You can be just an artisan by never hunting, and only crafting. Granted it
might be harder to get some money to start lowbie crafting at first, and you
may have to buy all of your components instead of harvesting them yourself
(in some of the more dangerous areas), but it can be done.

EQ2 less content than WoW

EQ2 less content than WoW Nov 9, 2004, 11:35
Nov 9, 2004, 11:35

Despite it's name "Everquest" 2, EQ2 is currently being "outquested" by WoW
by leaps and bounds. How can it happen? See here..

-----------------
I have been cataloging 220 NPC's in 4 Zones of Freeport for eq2vault. Given
the fact that Freeport has 13 zones, i estimate the amount of NPC's at
around 700.

Out of that 700, around every 10th will give you a Quest, that makes around
70 potential Questgivers. Apart from the loading time of zoning through 13
Zones (every Zone has a loading screen) there is one fact:

We have to double that number for Queynos and Freeport, so were up o 140.
Now since all quests are level based, we multiply that number by 10,
estimating SOE has done their job and added quests for every level (which
they havent by the way), and youre looking at 1400 quests for the full
retail game.

Thats's just a little less then WOW and we only have proof of about 200
quests actually existing, the rest is speculation.
------------------

Well we also got the numbers from Allakhazam for WoW today, listed as >>
2,101 <<. In other words, WoW today has, before release, around 20% less
Quests then Everquest 1 after 5 years and 3 times as many quests as EQ2.

Is WoW going to invade EQ2 in its very own territory and beat it in PVE.
Sure looks like it to me.

NEW:
--------------
In closing we can conclude that even though EQ2 is a purely PVE centered
game it still has less quests then the dual PVP/PVE created WoW, and the
accusations that WoW will lack in PVE content can be turned down easily. As
far as the facts go EQ2 does not have more PVE content then WoW. In fact, i
would go so far as to say that EQ2 features significantly less PVE content,
and just content in general then WoW.

Raiding is also not an issue, because WoW already has raid groups and around
20 raid dungeons, again EQ2 is left behind, although not by much.

EQ2 removes the option for:

Splitting an encounter, Breaking a room, Root rotting, Pet Tanking, Feign
death splitting, Lulling, or anything else that isn't the single approach
that the encounter was designed to handle.

If you want to do anything besides kill the rare 1 out of 10 solo bug,
armadillo, lion or rat sneak then you must have a group.

Once you have that group, the encounters are completely straightforward.
Pull group of mobs, hit hotkey #1 six times, switch target, rinse, repeat.
If you had the correct balance of Enchanter, Cleric and Tank, then you win
the encounter (and unless someone goes linkdead or spontaneously stupid; You
always win that encounter) If you didn't have that balance, it's back to the
entrance to wait and try to find someone LFG.

Dont you love it when ppl post crap about stuff they know nothing about lol, Its obvious to me that this geek hasnt played EQ2 at all cause you can splitt encounters and you can solo groups and solo encounters all by yourself if you want, the way the splitt is set up is by choice this time so if you dont want interference you dont call for help, If you do need help with a mob theres a button for it and it allows for ppl to get help, I like the new system cause it caues no Ksing.

Let me shut this chump up once and for all, how come im playing for like several hours and no one is even griefing?
How come I and everyone else who IS playing is enjoying the new combat system? How come eveyone who IS playing is completely thrilled by the quest system? How come your comming in here with all your Lies? Do you work for Blizzard?

Dosent matter cause EVERY web site thats reviewed EQ2 and compared it to Wow said EQ2 is the one to buy? Errr.... huh, so dont come and post about a game in which other ppl are playing and enjoying, I do plan on getting Wow but i dont plan on getting that much time to play it cause EQ2 will dominate it.
Heck I can afford EQ2 or Wow so I dont give a rats ass which one turns out better WTF, you make me laugh with all your ranting and raveing about how this will suck hehe I tried Wow beta its the same old gameplay like EQ1 was press a button kill a monster repeat, only the graphics at least the Terrain looks no better than tribes 1 LOL just go look at it then compare it to the 5 year old game tribes, but the game is kinda enjoyable but no where near as enjoyable as EQ2 is.

What's worse is how they took out the ability to retrain your talents so if you screw up on one character, you'll likely have to start over again because none of the raid-guilds will accept you as a member otherwise

Umm.. they didn't take the ability out, they only charge for it now. Your first time is pretty cheap, too, at 1 gold. Especially if you have friends, which you obviously do. As for raid-guilds demanding that I play my character a certain way, they can go fuck themselves. There are plenty of guilds out there, most that aren't so anal as to demand what I do with my time.

Guild Wars needs more polish. It was fun and I look forward to seeing the final version of it. The two games aren't very similar though. I can easily see myself playing both WoW and GW at the same time.

I reached level 20 in GW over the weekend and was surprised that this was the max level for retail as well. Although, you can still "level" and get points to boost skills/attribs. The GW system of trade is terrible with everyone is spaming WTB/WTS. I guess I'm spoiled by the WoW auction house and mail system.

Saying GW is an alternative to WoW is like saying Rome: Total War is an alternative to WoW. It's something to buy and try, but it's a different game.

I've been in both stress tests now, and currently have 2 characters - a lvl 17 Warlock and a lvl 18 Hunter. I am most astonished by the amount of content in this game! Quests galore, and I'd say that about 80% of the quests are quite fun to do (a remarkably good percentage).

You speak about Guild Wars as if your opinion was fact. I hardly think that 400,000 people would have logged in during the last WPE to play a boring game. Personally i find fun in both games, they're different but enjoyable. I also think that GW was more complete in many aspects even during its E3 alpha phase than WoW is now --- although GW doesn't classify as a normal MMORPG... anyway, i'll be buying both. I admit i'm looking forward to GW more, but that's because the mission-based style appeals greatly to me. Exploring in WoW i generally find more fun than in GW.

Yes, you are completely right. I was sharing my opinion. Isn't that what we are doing here?

Sorry, build Guild Wars seemed too simple for me. WoW is designed to be simple, but still has more depth than GW.

And you can't judge the game by 400,000 who joined a "world event". It's unfair.

Not all of those 400,000 people who tried it actually liked it. Hell, some probably didn't even know what they were trying.

Don't get me wrong, GW was surprisingly stable and ran fairly well but it is just not fun (IMHO(pinion)) (=

Morphine -

I too was getting all kinds of errors during the FP signup. That's just the way popular open betas are. I was able to get past the errors by (1) making sure I was signed in to FP with my gamespy ID (2) filling out the form and submitting it over and over again, sometimes with multiple browser windows and (3)getting past the graphic / "enter what you see on the screen" part by doing basically the same as #2.

The last screen in the FP signup process had "Your unique World of Warcraft Open Beta key is:", which is definitely for creating my WOW account.

the people that are in and playing are fine. its the rush for open beta
thats pounding the servers

remember this isnt EQ2....people actually want to play this game, and as
usual Sony was too chicken to have an open beta.

they saved their open beta for paying customers

Worse would have happened to EQ2, their servers wont even be stable as it
is.

At least WoW is playable with the tons of people that are already logging
in.

Thousands upon thousands of people are not gonna pass up a chance to play
for free the upcoming best selling MMORPG in computer game history

And yes, EQ2's grind is WORSE than EQ1. The encounters are also scripted between solo "content" and group. Solo content is defined as randomly placed wandering mobs that Sony threw in at the last second.

EQ2 removes the option for:

Splitting an encounter, Breaking a room, Root rotting, Pet Tanking, Feign
death splitting, Lulling, or anything else that isn't the single approach
that the encounter was designed to handle.

If you want to do anything besides kill the rare 1 out of 10 solo bug,

the encounter (and unless someone goes linkdead or spontaneously stupid; You
always win that encounter) If you didn't have that balance, it's back to the
entrance to wait and try to find someone LFG.

There is no room for exceptionally skilled players any longer, which makes
the entire process very boring. Some of you may say, "Wait! an Enchanter
must be skilled in order to correctly Mez the incoming mobs and a Cleric
must be skilled in order to choose the right time to heal, while a Tank must
be skilled to errr.. pull correctly"

Yes content and graphics are nice and all but what about gameplay? I've played EQ1 for 3 years, got completely bored with it, and am trying to decide whether to buy WoW or EQII, don't want more of the same. If EQII's gameplay/combat/level grind system is in any way similar to the first EQ then I'll pass. About to try WoW for the first time ; goodbye job, hello undead magi.

After several hours of playing im completley thrilled and overjoyed about EQ2, Now dont get me wrong im still getting Wow but i might not even install it if this game continues to thrill me the way it has so far.
The many differences to this and any other mmorpg are #1 No lag #2 no one thats online playing complaining about it #3 graphics are astounding with no slowdown #4 Quest everywhere and plenty of content.
The downside is there are a few broken quests nameley the overseer quest is broken. but i cant think of anything else wrong with this game, It sure is hard considering after 6 hours playing EQ1 I was lvl 12 and here im only lvl 6 and ive been grinding with groups doing quests and crafting so not completley trying to power level <which takes the fun out> but ive been playing non stop for like 7 hours and i cant stop thinking about the possibilities.
Im sure your thinking bahh it cant be better than Wow , well im sorry to say it is, even if you make the graphics of Wow up to EQ2 standards there is something about the gameplay that has me sitting back smiling, Wow beta did that too but not like EQ2 is doing.
I will go on record and say this is the best game ive ever seen made and i go back a long way with rpgs, Started with Ultima 1 Amiga, SSI AD&D gold box series,Dungeon master,Elite,Might& Magic1,Wizadry ,then moved on to mmorpgs my first of which was UO, then EQ1,DAoC,AO,AC1,Eve,SWG,COH, and a few i would not like to mention so i think im pretty jaded and bored to tears already but EQ2 has awoken the magic agian.
