Spector Departs ION

Warren Spector exits Eidos on GameSpot (thanks Frans) has word that the famed designer has parted ways with ION/Eidos. They quote a spokesperson as saying: "Eidos announces that Warren Spector has relinquished his role as Studio Director at Ion Storm. Warren has chosen to pursue personal interests outside the company, but he will continue to work for Eidos as an IP consultant. His insight and expertise is highly valued by Eidos, and the company looks forward to continuing its relationship with Warren in his new role." The story goes on to speculate that Warren's consulting with Eidos may be on the next Tomb Raider game and repeat rumors of a possible move to Midway. In another developer departure, Fred Nilsson's .plan File announces the animator is leaving id Software to return to the movie industry.

Stop trying to revive dead franchises and create a new IP. It worked quite well for Deus Ex as I remember, so why the hell not try it again?

What goes around comes around.

Didn't he push his protege, Harvey something?, out the door for screwing up Deus Ex 2? Then Thief crashed and burned.

I will never forget some interview that Harvey did. Sounded like a kid whose father had kicked him out of the house with the clothes on his back.

People who sacrifice others? Karma will get you every time.

Spector's official title was studio director. I don't believe he was any more involved with Thief 3 than he was with Deus Ex 2. He was much more involved with DX than with DX2, which he essentially handed over to Harvey Smith.

P.S. I don't recall Spector firing Smith, but perhaps I missed that.

Spector wasn't lead design on DX2. Harvey Smith was. Spector was part of the Theif 3 team.

Woah, this should be a big thread. Even though I was never a big fan of the DX or Thief series, it's tough to see big names exit to take on lesser roles in the industry. Good luck Warren. Maybe launch some rockets?

I have a lot of respect for Warren and whatshisname after DX1, and would give them the benefit of the doubt with another game.

DX2 was so non-entertaining, though, that it would likely be a last chance.

I still have some faith.

Hmmm .... may be this will give him the freedom to develope new IP, and not be forced to develope for consoles (well, here's hoping that is ther case at least).

I bet you this thread explodes to 150-plus posts. We have not had a controversial thread in a while and I bet the regular posters here are itching to vomit out all that pent up whining.

I will get things started -

* DX2 and Thief 3 are awesome PC games and Ion Storm/Warren Spector delivered on all that they promised.
* Doom 3 sucks.
* Half Life 2 is the greatest PC game ever made.

The original Deus Ex made me a fan for life. I choose to believe aberrations like DX:IW and TDS were solely Eidos' fault. I'm glad he might only be consulting for the Tomb Raider guys--I'd heard he might actually take over the studio and be forced to churn out yet more crap.

Maybe he'll actually do that square city block deal he's always been talking about.
