Spector Departs ION

Warren Spector exits Eidos on GameSpot (thanks Frans) has word that the famed designer has parted ways with ION/Eidos. They quote a spokesperson as saying: "Eidos announces that Warren Spector has relinquished his role as Studio Director at Ion Storm. Warren has chosen to pursue personal interests outside the company, but he will continue to work for Eidos as an IP consultant. His insight and expertise is highly valued by Eidos, and the company looks forward to continuing its relationship with Warren in his new role." The story goes on to speculate that Warren's consulting with Eidos may be on the next Tomb Raider game and repeat rumors of a possible move to Midway. In another developer departure, Fred Nilsson's .plan File announces the animator is leaving id Software to return to the movie industry.

IW itself wasn't a terrible game. However, when you slap the title "Deus Ex" in front of it, expectation jumps 1000-fold.

Obviously, the game did not live up to such expectation.

  • Is this news? As I understood it, this has already happened. At the very least, the agreement was mad a long time ago.

  • Spector has already been linked with Tomb Raider.

  • IW was a horrendously bad DE game and a fairly lackluster game on its own. The graphics were uninspired, they focused on the lighting over all other aspects of the game, the lighting (as they have it) has no use in the game, the levels are more like closets in size, the gameplay was lacking, the game was made stupid, you could care less about your character, your "friend" was an empty shell, etc.

  • DS is easily the worst in the series for its time. It was not as bad as IW, but it shared many of the same things - focusing on the lackluster lighting engine over the actual game, much smaller levels, adding GLINT 'O EASYNESS to everything, it seems unaware of what happened in Thief 2, numerous issues with the AI, NPCs that will endlessly respawn, NPCs that do not even bother to respawn offscreen, taking out the ever-basic rope, having a ridiculous amount of loot, poor animation, lacking polish, etc. It is like Thief 2, just made worse in a number of ways.

  • Meanwhile, Thief will be "fixed" so that people buy it regardless.

  • I know people like to blame Smith, but he did leave and, if you listen to Spector's interviews, Spector honestly believes that these are all great, wonderful things.

  • Whatever Spector does, let it be something new and not a bastardization of a previous game. Maybe we can have good, fun games and not simple, stupid ones.

Thinking TR needs to be both updated and go back to its exploration roots,
Ray

Making games is not unlike making a painting. Imagine if some famous artist is working on a great piece for a whole year telling everybody how great it is. It'll be greater than the Sisteen Chapel and change your life forever. But when he finally reveals it to the public the damn thing is half finished, pencil lines everywhere, and somebody punched a hole right through it.

You can pretty much apply countless analogies to crappy games. And Invisible War WAS a crappy game. Anybody who likes something for what it "could have been" and not what the fuck IT IS and how you were lied too should be shot for failing the human race.

they judged it for what it could have been

We get disappointed by games not when they don't live up to what they could have been, but what they should have been.

And I think you're confusing imaginations with expectations. Sometimes expectations aren't met even when they are very low. Doom3 is a case in point. Imagination is reserved for what games might be like in 10 years....ahhh the possibilities.

This marks the final chapter of Ion's descent into irrelevance. After the debacle that was John Romero, Warren Spector was their only hope of producing material that had any real value at all. With his departure, they are no longer a viable entity.

Now that's what I'm talking about!!

Actually, I do have a comment on Spector's departure. Anyone who denies Spector's impact on <begin qualifier> pc <end qualifier> gaming isn't giving him credit he deserves. It does bum me out that DX:IW was so consolized, but that really is a matter of preference and jilted expectations. I'm not really suprised to see Spector leave as I've always felt Ion Storms existence was rather tenuous. I wish him luck and I will keep an eye out for whatever project he works on next.

Wow, there's so much bullshit in this thread.

First of all, Harvey Smith left voluntarily. He was not fired.

DX:IW was a much more innovative game than it's given credit for, but the presentation was very poor. I understand why people didn't like it.

But Thief 3 was a great game. Don't let your 'hatred' or whatever of DX:IW blind you to that. Thief 3 was excellent.

And as I understand it, Ion Storm had a new studio director several months back, so Spector leaving doesn't seem very surprising.

It sold well enough to spawn a sequel, which tells me it was successful.

Because we all know prince of persia and bloodrayne were fucking blockbusters.

Flawed logic at it's worst.

Here's a hint: sales only effect the decision to make a sequel half the time.

I still believe DX:IW was a good game. It's just one of those cases where peoples imaginations could not possibly be matched. This happened with Fable as well. Instead of judging the game for what it was, they judged it for what it could have been.

Eh, glad to see him go. I recall he was the one that wanted to console-ize DX:IW and Thief 3, and that Harvey said after being fired that he was against this. It may have maximized ION/Eidos' profits, but it pissed off a lot of the PC gaming community. I played through DX:IW but I thought it sucked. Waste of $.

Stop trying to revive dead franchises and create a new IP. It worked quite well for Deus Ex as I remember, so why the hell not try it again?

Oh yeah the deus ex games were just flying off the shelves.

No

Well, if you consider a game a sucess if a few hardcore freaks enjoy it but barely anyone buys it like system shock 2 why, it was a big sucess in that case !
