Out of the Blue

It was a fine old Halloween yesterday, the rugrats did indeed hold off until sundown, and as always, were a delight. As always, Hudson was a hit... there were requests for shots of her in her fire chief's outfit last year, but we had a camera mishap, but this year we were able to work this out, so with all due advance "Welcome to my homepage, here are pictures of my dog" embarrassment, here are a few shots of Hudson the wonder dog (please don't share the shot revealing her secret identity with any criminal masterminds).

Aw. Those pics are enormous though. In screen size terms, not filesize.

If Hudson bites Blue it would simply be justice. I hope you keep these photos away from the new dog, because otherwise Hudson will never hear the end of it.

It's getting where I pray the Sony ad doesnt display whenever I come here. And it seems my prayers are being ignored with less and less frequency. The ad is too large and invasive, even at 1280x720.

Hudson is sooooooo cute!!!

I recommend firefox with the ad block plugin. It removes ads completely from pages. Not even a blank spot where the ad used to be remains. I've been using it for many many months and will never go back to IE.

Wow, I guess I really don't know my breeds. I was sort of expecting Hudson to look more like your classic Lassie-type-dog. How was the costume received by the neighborhood kids?

Oh, and Blue, I have a link to submit:

Blue,
Do I see an unfinished, non-weather treated wooden fence in the background of one of those pictures?

Tsk tsk tsk, naughty boy.

Ah . . . I believe the language he is speaking is refered to in some circles as crystal meth amphetiamine.

Man, last night was slow.

In preparation, my family bought A LOT of candy (an insane amount). In all, we had maybe 6 small groups of kids come by.

Meanwhile, we live in a nice safe suburb and it was reasonably warm (at least, not cold). I can only attribute this to last night being a "school night." Parents probably didn't want their kids staying out too late or getting too much candy (and have a sugar high all night) if they had school the next day.

Man, I remember when I used to go trick or treating. There were always loads of kids (and teenages)and we'd stay out pretty late. i guess this younger generation doesn't care as much for candy as we did.

Great, now I feel old :-(

I was wondering if I could get some ideas for an assignment I have coming up. I figured this would be a good place to ask because this is the only online community I'm in that has great numbers of tech savvy participants. Oh an before I get flamed, I just want to add that I'm not looking for people to do my assignment for me, just to get an idea to start me off.

Ok, I'm looking for a unique emerging technology, service or concept to discuss. Something current that would have a lot of resources I could easily find online.

Any ideas would be appreciated. Also any sites where I could look for information would help.

Thanks

I'm looking for a unique emerging technology

Not sure how emerging you want. One of the big, big things on the horizon though is RFID. It's not new tech -- it's been around since the early 70s -- but chip production and other technologies are converging so that it's going to be feasible to put an RFID chip in everything within the next decade. (Prices need to get down though, they're still in the $0.02-03 per 10,000 range. When they get to per 100k then they'll be cheap enough for wide usage).

This has a lot of consumer privacy/protection folks screaming, but it also has some massive advantages in a lot of industries. From self-checkout at stores that's 100% reliable, to auto-inventory systems that know the exact quantity count and location of items so they can self-reorder, to packages that inform drivers when they're near their dropoff stop. On the privacy end of things, it could allow stores to permanantly track your purchases, and do personal suggestions of what you might like next time you visit (think Minority Report). It could also allow people to be tracked in metropolitan areas without their knowledge or consent (note -- largely FUD; there's a variety of issues with actually doing this, but none are insurmountable).

For online resources, just google for RFID. There's plenty out there. Separating the wheat from the chaff is more difficult, as usual.

Perhaps something like carbon nano-tubes? Such technology would allow us to make strong, yet light-weight, materials.

I "THINK" right now we've been able to make small amounts, but they're expensive and we can't make enough reliably.

But the concept is pretty neat. Then again, I like someone else's post about RFID.

I "THINK" right now we've been able to make small amounts, but they're expensive and we can't make enough reliably.

We're able to manufacture relatively short strands (a few meters in length I think), but it's certainly not a method that's ready for industrial usage. And it is expensive, as you said.

Once we can manufacture strands much, much longer and much, much cheaper then the sky's the limit. Literally. Sky hook anyone?

They're also being looked at in really small areas -- Intel is hoping to use carbon nanotubes in chip manufacturing to reduce electron leakage and waste heat. I think they're targeting somewhere around 2017. If successful it could be a pretty dramatic improvement for semiconductor manufacturing.

One of the big, big things on the horizon though is RFID.

That will be big. I personally know a guy who will probably become ultra rich when it does finally happen because he holds patents on some of the machinery and other technology involved in making the tiny batteries used to power those suckers up. Years ago my company help build parts for a prototype that never really got off the ground. Pretty interesting though.

Another technology worth looking into might be fuel cells.

Dammit! I can't get that out of my head now! Remind me never to let that guy borrow any of my records.
