CoV Beta Details

NCsoft sends along details on plans to beta test the upcoming City of Villains expansion that will add evildoers to the mix of goody-two shoes in City of Heroes, their comic-inspired MMORPG:
AUSTIN, Texas, Oct. 28, 2004— NCsoft® Corporation (KSE: 036570.KS), the world’s leading developer and publisher of online computer games today announced preliminary beta testing plans for the highly anticipated City of Villains™ massively multiplayer online computer game. The plan will reward long time players of City of Heroes™ with beta testing slots for City of Villains, slated for release next year.

Created by Cryptic Studios™, City of Villains is the sequel to the hugely successful and critically acclaimed City of Heroes, which launched in April of this year.

The program will give priority to those who have been subscribed to City of Heroes the longest. A percentage of slots will be reserved for City of Heroes’ veterans, players who have subscribed to City of Heroes for at least 12 months. Those players will automatically earn a slot as a Villains beta tester. Players with at least six months of time in City of Heroes will receive the next level of priority consideration for the beta testing program. Higher character level is not necessarily an advantage in the selection process.

“We are announcing the plans today due to the overwhelming amount of requests we’ve received from our subscribers,” said Jack Emmert, lead designer for City of Heroes. “It makes sense for us to offer this incentive to our most dedicated players. Who else would be more capable of assisting us in the beta test than the folks most familiar with the way City of Heroes works?”

Emmert added, “We’ll be announcing more details at a later date, but the bottom line is that the longer you’ve subscribed to the game, the better your chances will be of getting a first-look at City of Villains.”

City of Villains will provide players with a chance to play the “bad guy” in the comic-book inspired world created by Cryptic Studios. Take on the role of super-powered villains and create your own character using thousands of power and costume options. Then battle heroes and become a true menace to society while plotting your way to world domination.

this is so weird, I'm on a message board DEFENDING a MMO....never thought I'd be doing that

if you've ever fantasized about being a superhero, CoH will tug those emotional strings. Yeah its pretty simplistic to just run/fly/jump around killing mobs like every other MMO, but everything is done within the Comic book style context so it falls within that realm.

you've got hundreds of missions and story arcs to go through as well, so if all you're doing is just fighting street mobs, you're missing the content, but thats not CoH's fault, that's yours.

Original game still lacks any real (good) content and they're talking expansion already?

Sorry Halsy, you're wrong on this one.

I find nothing whatsoever wrong with the content in CoH -- there's a ton of story in the missions and arcs, the bad guys are varied, and the player customization is top notch.

Yes, it's "go kill stuff" over and over, but so is every other damn MMORPG. Show me one that isn't. If you're a tradeskill lover then, no, there's no "content" for you (although there will be in Issue 3 or 4 with the non-combat skill system coming), but that's your own damn fault for not reading about the game beforehand.

As for your continued whining about MMORPGs not giving away free content -- I call BS on you. CoH has already released two major expansions for free. The first raised the level cap from 40 to 50, added numerous new zones, numerous new villian groups, roughly quintupled the number of archvillians to fight, and more. The second added yet more new zones -- both high (40+) and low (5-15), varied up the mission objectives (you actually have to do more than just kill everything), and more.

What the heck are you looking for? A free pony?

No content? They put out a good bit of content in patches so far.
And no story? Huh? Did you skip the story arcs, and concentrate only on leveling? The game has a good bit of story to it, if you actually read the story behind the missions you're doing.

hardly, there have been 2 major free updates that have updated loads of content and another one is on the way that will add epic Archetypes

the only downside is that the majority of it is high level content, servicing the hard core even though there are more casual than hard core.

Am I the only person enjoying CoH?

Admittedly, I'm not a hard-core RPG'er, but I enjoy playing 10 or so hours a week. I'm looking forward to this weekend's Halloween Event.

Yeah I can't see what this add-on will include other then say new templates of villan costumes and maybe a few selected powers that they would have access to.

I agree, they have to get a story happening soon or my subscription will be cancelled.

BTW what is DDO?

I think the principle of the expansion is to provide more content.

Original game still lacks any real (good) content and they're talking expansion already? Sounds like the SOE pay to play and we'll give you the content a few years from now plan.

I am so ready for DDO.

I'm dying to see what this is like. Don't get me wrong, I grew bored with CoH after about 2 months, and the same thing will probably happen here.

But I think playing a villain would be oh-so-much-more exciting than a hero.
