Far Cry Patch & Linux Server

The recently promised (story) version 1.3 patch is now available for Far Cry, offering a long-awaited update for Crytek's first-person shooter that includes some of the features from the abortive version 1.2 patch (story). Accompanying the client patch is a new dedicated Linux server, the 74 MB client can be found on 3D Gamers, ActionTrip, FileFront, FileShack (registration required), and Worthplaying. The 6 MB Linux server is available on 3D Gamers, ActionTrip, FileFront, FileShack (registration required), and Worthplaying.

and non-NV40 cards from NVIDIA may have water reflection bugs when detail is set to Ultra High.
That doesn't have anything to do with drivers. That's talking about an earlier generation of card. As you go back in time, earlier generations support fewer and fewer of the things today's generation does. The first Voodoo cards didn't have transform and lighting, we didn't get pixel shaders until a couple of generations ago. That's all hardware stuff.

Ha-hem... from the patch description on avault (read the last bit):

NOTE: There are known issues with the v1.3 patch. Some of the more notable ones are that: v1.2 save games are not compatible with v1.3; those using ATI's v4.9 Catalyst drivers may have some graphical anomalies when lighting is set to High, it can be fixed by either turning down the lighting quality or using the v4.3 Catalyst drivers; and non-NV40 cards from NVIDIA may have water reflection bugs when detail is set to Ultra High.

And by the way, I have a 9700 Pro and had no problems whatsoever running Far Cry or Doom 3 with it. Apparently, you milleage will vary...

ATI cards are well known for their driver issues, I mean just look at all the problems people had with games like Far Cry and Doom 3.
I'm not the know all be all of stuff, but what I do know is that when I purchase a product I also look at past history of said product and when it came to upgrade from my 3dfx card I went with Nvidia and I won't go back.

And ATI does have a standing history of playing juggle the drivers with certain games. The last issue I had with any Nvidia drivers and games was City of Hero's but that was due to an issue with Service Pack 2 for XP, which has been fixed with beta drivers from Nvidia.

Wow, all in all, I'd have to say this was a nice patch I guess. I'm on a GF 6800 GT so I guess I benefitted from that SM3.0 thingy. I put my shadows up on to High as well as everything else. Man, the shadows can compete with Doom 3 on the weapons, they are that nice. It even has alittle of that shiny floor stuff HL2 has except not as extreme. This was a very nicely made game and sucks to be overshadowed by the likes of D3 or HL2. I just bought it off Ebay for 13 bucks recently. Good deal.

but it's interesting it never seems to happen with NVidia cards.

It never happens FOR YOU. There is a big difference. As much as you like to think so, the world doesn't begin, nor end, with your experiences.

Throughout the year and a half that I owned a Geforce 2 GTS, I had a fucking TON of driver issues with it. It basically took about ten releases for me to find a driver that would run stable, and then I had to stay on that driver for nine months before another stable driver (for me) came out.

It's all purely dependant on what hardware and what brand of card you have. I had an Asus motherboard with an Asus Geforce 2 GTS, and the fucking card would not run the reference drivers without crashing every ten seconds.
And then, ofcourse, out came Sacrifice, which would ONLY run with one single driver, that being a reference driver. Nice going there.

Both companies are fucking cunts when it comes to the stability of their drivers. It's all about getting 2% extra fps in Unreal Fucking Tournament 2008, or even worse, some fucking benchmark that nobody gives a shit about, and at the same time compatibility with a dozen games that are six months old goes down the fucking crapper.

Crytek is just a bunch of sorry ass programmers, and I say this despite the fact that I love their game. Asking people to roll back to 4.3 is just fucking ridiculous, as is the fact that it took them nearly a year to implement a savegame system. This isn't ATI's fault.
Now, KOTOR, on the other hand...

Btw, what expansion pack? Did that get announced?

HDR
(High Data Rate) A wireless data technology from QUALCOMM that provides up to a 2.4 Mbps data rate in a standard 1.25MHz CDMA voice channel. HDR can be used to enhance data capabilities in existing cdmaOne networks or in stand-alone data networks. With existing CDMA networks, some number of channels are changed from voice to data. Using a combination of TDM and CDMA, HDR shares each channel among several users, but on an as-needed basis rather than a fixed time slot as in TDMA. Optimized for IP packets and Internet access, the HDR data rate will vary depending on the distance from the mobile phone to the base station.

HDR is being used as the 3G technology for cdmaOne network carriers, known as CDMA2000. A data-only version (1XEv-Data Only) and an integrated voice-data version (1XEv-Data Voice) are available (see CDMA2000). See wireless generations.

I can't believe how many people with nVidia cards blame ATi because a TWIMTBP game doesn't work as it should.

About HDR: big performance hit and you can't enable AA. Sometimes is a neat effect to watch, some other times it just burns your cornea.

A man made idea created to scare the public into fearing the wraith of god and giving power to the preachers whom talk about the firey death of Jews.

First used by John Darby, a 1900 century british preacher whose appocolicptic and new theroy on End of Days.

As usually with selfserving manipulative Conservitive Evangelical Assholes he couldnt read Hebrew so his revisionist version of the Bible was based on some other misinterpretation.
Darby's interpertation is the one freakazoids still base thier, End of Days, on today those ridiculous movies and books , too
Thou they wont admit its Darby's, but if you press the point of which version of the bible, mentions this they eventually must come clean.
Good luck getting a manipulator to stay around to get the truth out of him

Edit: Oh yeah the ontopic stuff
I have had several Nvidia cards and do get frustrated with my current and first ATI cards drivers.
Isnt part of the problem that ATI didnt really have a foot hold evarly on and NVidia was pushing engine developers to do things thier way, thou it wasnt the most efficent way?
ATI are playing catchup to a certian degree I think, especially reguarding OpenGL.
I think NVidia being manipulative is part of the problem with FarCry and basic greed on Cryotec's part as they were give money by NVidia to implement shader 3.0, which was unnecessary and at the expense of getting the game functioning correctly with shader 2.0 first.
Including setting aside a huge list of problems in the game not only with multiplayer but single player as well.
Cryotec paid a huge loss of fans to deal with NVidia instead of taking care of thier fan base.

Weird with an x800xt on an intel 875 chipset and never had problems with games. I played bf:v, bf1942 DC, ut:2k4, far cry, doom3, tribes vengeance and a couple of car racing demos not a single issue. Had the performace hit at first on doom3 but the ferformance has gone up considerably with each driver release.

Not to say that your problems do not exist!
Even when i had my 9700pro i never had the problems i kept reading about. Sometimes i wonder if it's configuration probs or if I just tweak and OC so damn much i solve issues without realizing it. You even see daily reviews of video cards fro various sites and they do not seem to have so many issues.

No matter what the reason is, it's not good for ati that's for sure. Either Nvidia cards are easier to get working right or ATI needs help with their drivers.

do I roll back to 4.3 so I can play Far Cry but NOT play some other game?

I believe that ATI drivers are inherently buggy to begin with... and as they gradually squash those bugs, it breaks other games that were programmed to work around those bugs. In other words, if ATI released a 100% bug free driver tomorrow, many games simply would not work.

The simplest solution would be for ATI to allow multiple driver releases to coexist... You could simply select among the installed drivers in the control panel, and reboot. Of course, I don't expect ATI to implement such a common sense solution... after all, they're Canadian
