New ATI Drivers

This ATI Driver Download and Installation Page now offers downloads of new version 4.10 CATALYST reference drivers for RADEON accelerators running under Windows XP (throwing a curve to those who think version 5.0 follows version 4.9). The accompanying notes say ATI recommends Service Pack 2 be installed. Thanks Cliff.

Crashes in COD:UO Oct 14, 2004, 23:08

Heads up for anyone that plays COD:UO.. I installed the 4.10's and didnt change my settings from what they were with the 4.9 drivers. Yet, when I go to play COD:UO (Call of Duty: United Offensive) multiplayer, the game crashes 5 minutes after I join, with a rather odd buzzing screech like sound.. Its crashed 6 times now in the last hour, despite a complete re-install of the 4.10 drivers, so I've since re-installed the 4.9's and things are back to normal.. BTW, I use a 9600xt..

I think ATI's saving the 5.0 label for January, when their completely re-written OGL driver is completed.

Anyone knows what driver version these Cat's have? I'm on a mac right now and can't check...

Edit: says 6.14.10.6483 as Display driver on ATi webpage. How does that compare to the 8.07 hotfix number?

1. The Catalyst suite version is the year and month it was released. ie October (10th month) 2004 driver suite is 4.10. There will be no 5.0 just like there was no 4.0 because there is no 0 month. This makes a lot of sense when you're releasing 12 sets a year on a monthly basis. This is not new people, try to catch up a year or two.

2. This driver set is actually older than the 8.07 hotfix and does not have the fix for cards with 256 megs of RAM nor a few other fixes. This may give you a decrease in performance if you own one of those cards. Unless you're having issues stick with the Omega drivers based on the 8.07 hotfix (or the ATI 8.07 if you prefer).

I can't frigging wait. After two years, maybe finally we'll get decent OpenGL performance out of an ATI card...

Yeah...I mean Doom 3 ran like dog crap on my 9800 Pro...you know...1024x768 set to high quality on a 128M card at perfectly playable frame rates! ATI is so incompetent!

Everyone rags on ATI's OpenGL performance; yet I ran D3 at 1280*1024 high with my 9800 Pro 256 MB.

Personally I think the days of driver support being an issue are gone (except for linux support).

I think ATI still leads the way in performance, not because they are better at the moment (they aren't) but because they are posting scores close to nVidias cards while using alot less power and cooling.

I've got a P4 2.8Ghz, 1GB DDR, Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB. Doom 3 on high quality @ 1024x768 gave me 35 FPS in an empty corridor, 25-30 if something happened. Shifting down to 800x600 @ medium quality helped tremendously, putting my FPS in the 40 ranges consistently.

Maybe my system isn't tweaked properly, or maybe ATI's OpenGL driver really does suck. I've never had a stability issue, just an in-game performance issue. Anyone have a nice tweak guide to link to?

It has been said months (a year maybe) ago that these drivers will be named 4.10. BEFORE they announced that they want to rewrite the opengl driver... I think even blues had the news about it.

I played doom3 on a 3.2+ 9700pro PC @ 1024X768 shadows on medium the rest at max ..smooth as silk. Now I have an x800xt and everyrhing set to max @ 1024x768.

One thing, the 3.2 is running @ 3.6.....

MAybe it's the tweaks I apply when I OC but I've never had any performance or stability issues since i got the card 3 months after it's release. Anyways with these drivers the diff in performance in doom3...(x800 xt vs 6800 ultra) is now les than 10 frames per second. At least that was the case in the few oerformane reviews.

Those of you with 256mb cards may want to try the 8.07 drivers [use google].

They are newer than these, stable, and they fix a massive memory allocation bug that can net you +1000pts on your favorite benchmark app [with the x800's of course]

yeah, but really, if they anticipated their revision numbering properly, they'd go 4.01, 4.02...4.09, 4.10, 4.11.

Don't feel so bad. I know people that are getting similar benchmarks with more powerful video cards.

DOOM 3 is definately a hog. It's a beautiful game (when you're not in the dark), but requires a lot of horsepower to run.

I wouldn't blame it on ATI that much. the nVidia 6800 series does pretty well (GT and Pro), but that's because nVidia has always been better in the OpenGL department.

My only annoyance is they recommend SP2 for the drivers. I use a couple of applications that don't mesh well with SP2, such as "City of Heroes." Yeh, I have an nVidia, but I just hope other companies (such as nVidia) don't follow this trend yet.

SP2 is great, but their new code-security measures break things.

That's not necesarily how it works. The dots delineate individual terms - ie Version 4 Revision 10 - they don't describe a decimal number. It's a different use of the dot character than you are used to, but it is consistent. IP addresses are another example.

I'd be pissed about City of Heroes if I was you, on account of you have to leave yourself open to virtual assrape because you can't run the largest WindowsXP security update ever.

It blue screened both times that I tried to install it.
It gave a debug code: USB_driver. Huh ? It gets even better. Now windows freezes up right at the end of disk checking. It also now checks drive D before drive C for some reason. Time to reinstall Windows now. Brilliant move ATI ...

I reinstalled the old drivers which came with the card. Now whenever I start any game it freezes up after about 5 seconds of normal play. The off switch on the front of the computer won't even work when it does this although reset does. I can't alt-tab or cnrl-alt-del out of it either. They really managed to mess this up royally. I'd think twice before installing this version.

Windows reinstall disk, here I come.

I have a 9600xt just like the first poster who also suddenly developed crashing problems.

Does ATI post their older driver versions anywhere ?
