Yup, a lot of recent and upcoming games use the bloom effect, it's part of DX9 and even the P.O.S. Xbox can do it. A lot of developers have used it badly though (Deus Ex 2, Thief 3). FSW I felt used it decently, and (start hidden secret breaking my disclosure agreement with Sony stuff, SO DON'T ANYONE POST THIS ANYWHERE ELSE) SWG:JTL just put an awesome bloom effect in the beta! It's around bright stellar objects, lightning in the nebulas, and hyperspace. It's not in the ground game yet, don't know if it will ever be. Anyway, the first time I hyperspaced into a nebula-rich area with bloom and animated 3D electrical discharges I was really impressed. END SUPER SECRET TEXT.

Gotta agree with you there. I didn`t buy the game cause it WAS a tad too mindless for me. lol But I was really impressed with the inventive ideas they used in the demo. Like the witch coming by on the flaming broomstick. The demo was priceless coolness in the ideas the Dev team came up with. And I really liked the ambient sounds etc. I can only imagine how cool the whole game was in these areas.

I still think a Van Helsing movie game would have rocked with this engine. PainKiller had the right look an everything.

Bloom was around pre-WoW... The earliest I remember seeing it was the Deus Ex 2 demo.

Bloom is an effect that causes light to "haze over" geometry, fuzzing out the edges. It's also in Full Spectrum Warrior if I recall the demo correctly.

Oh know. The dreaded Bloom effect has been brought from World of Warcraft to here. I thought it was a Blizzard only thing and a bad one at that. I think this effect is horrid and gives a vaseline been spread over my LCD look. It makes WoW look really nice in some instances, especially indoors, though your character looks so much better with it off. It kills anti aliasing.

I still don't like the "old school" gameplay of Painkiller enough to buy it, but I think the graphics are about as advanced as anything on the market. These guys understand how to balance performance, highres textures, and some good effects (although no one has tried to do D3's shadow system). My guess is HL2 looks about like this.

This level wasn't included in the other demos. It seems kind of strange to redo a level from the first game to show what the expansion pack's updated engine can do. I would have rather had a level form the expansion pack, oh well, it does look a lot better though.

Is this a completely new level from the previous demos?
