No Vampire Multiplayer

Again digging into the new PC Gamer magazine as a source, HomeLAN Fed reports the latest issue of the print mag has a confirmation that Vampire: The Masquerade -- Bloodlines, Troika's upcoming Source-engine vampire game, will not feature multiplayer support. Let's say it together... that sucks.

Not having multiplayer in Bloodlines is a huge blow to the game, and I predict it will have zero replay value and only modest success, if not outright failure (possible critical acclaim though). With full multiplayer support, strong mod support, it could've been revolutionary as the very first FPS/RPG hybrid with multiplayer questing. The first virtual recreation of RPG questing in an action environment, instead of a computer game recreating ancient dice roll system.

(System Shock 2's multiplayer was tacked on, and the game had no mod support.) Remember folks, RPGs were designed from the beginning to be multiplayer. And Vampire is based on a pen and paper RPG, entirely built around multiplayer concepts. Removing multiplayer utterly destroys the very definition of the term "RPG" by providing players with scripted dialogue tree, and pre-built roles. As the father of RPG Gary Gygax said, the vast majority of video game RPGs aren't RPGs because you don't play a role you want, you play a role that is pre-written for you. Everything is scripted, like a Choose your own adventure book.

I feel like those who are saying loss of multiplayer is no big deal are forgetting that it's good to advance the gaming industry in significant ways, instead of rehashing old concepts with new graphics and stories. Bloodlines "team deathmatch" add-on would've been a waste of time, I agree. Bloodlines "going on quests with friends" multiplayer would've been great. Especially if those quests could've been created by some mod tools, for endless replay value. What keeps NWN from being great to a lot of people? it's boring. Click and watch gameplay. What keeps the bulk of FPS games shallow? Lack of roleplaying's depth. Take the advantages of both genres and put them together and we could have something great. The fact that Vampire has a unique blend of guns and magic made it a great candidate for such a hybrid game, too. But instead, the closest we'll get to action multiplayer RPG fun is Dungeon Lords.. a third-person sword fantasy game with awkward combat controls. Great.

I thought fall 2004 would be the best season for gamers in years, but it looks like it will be yet another dissapointing game sequel, or "may as well be a sequel" game after another. I pray some good mods come out for HL2, especially ones that are both multiplayer AND story/quest-driven.
