Out of the Blue

Well, it's a bit of an anniversary here, as this site first moved to its own domain here at bluesnews.com eight years ago today. The move came after the site spent the preceding 15-or-so months on my home ISP's webserver, so the frightening implication of the math on this one is that we're not too far off from our 10th anniversary overall... which of course is like a million, in internet years.

Anyway, thanks to all of you for your continued support through thick and thin. Here's to the future... may it be ever thicker (or thinner, whichever one of those is supposed to be the good one).

Have the engineer build turrets to block the doorways on your teams spawn room on that capture and hold map.

Canal Zone 2 baby! That was my favorite TFC map, too bad no one plays it anymore. I loved working with a spy to sneak into the enemy base and blow up their command center, thus resetting all the flags.

As I recall the greifing article became a regular feature. I remember one where you load up on flashbangs in Rogue Spear (a title they endlessly made fun of) and then just flash your team all round long. Another one was for Age of Empires II, you go around at the beginning of the map and grab all the sheep and then lead them through the enemies base messaging "I own all the sheep, you cannot stand against me!"

PCXL was awesome, too bad theres nothing like it around anymore.

Congrats Blue on your anniversary. God, has it really been 8 years?

I still remember being a jealous little teenager at the fact that you were in the Rangers QW clan... Those were the days. What fun times, and what a fun game.

I miss 2's ever-changing Blue Q2 logo as well...

I guess you made it past the seven year itch. Truthfully, I've been surprised over the years that you continued to survive. Not a knock on you, just a view on how tough it is to make a living running a web-site. Incredibly well done, Blue. Here's hoping to another 8-10 years, at least.

The truth is brutal. Prepare for pain.

They had an article on griefing in PCXL, not on how to prevent it but gave some pointers on how to do it....lol.

One of them was for TFC. Have the engineer build turrets to block the doorways on your teams spawn room on that capture and hold map. Another was for Starcraft. Team up with another player and while he's out fighting your opponents you hang back and take apart his base with your units. Another was that they felt flight sims would be less boring if they got snashed while playing so they got drunk and wrote a piece on that.

Mike Solomon, the editor , went over to the official Xbox magazine once PCXL shut down. He's since left that gig too. Good times. I really wish they'd do a quarterly publication or something.

I gotta admit though, I do miss Daily Radar and PCXL.

Same here man. They wrote some funny, funny shit. Reviews and editorials and stuff weren't great but man was it ever hilarious.

Almost a decade and still the best gaming site out there. It's been my homepage for almost 5 years, the first thing I read in the morning. I gotta admit though, I do miss Daily Radar and PCXL.

A fith of a billion people (that's 1/30th of the population, everywhere) have found this site. Oh my God that's a lot. Even if those aren't all unique viewers, still...

Wow. And I've only been here since 1998 or so. Congrats, man.

"Did you keep any of the headlines from 10 years ago?
What were people talking about back then?"

Just what the hell was going on 10 years ago? I can't remember anything before PCG got the first screenshots of Quake, that's got to be the 8 year mark or so. Wasn't there a Doom FAQ, or Doom mouse guide, or something? I wonder if the world will ever appreciate how many people started on the internet just to download levels for LAN games and DWANGO...

EDIT: "old" and "used to be" do not go with DS flaming. Worry not, for this tradition is alive and well.

I feel old.

Keep up the good work, Blue! Came here from Voodoo Extreme and haven't looked back. (The old Derek Smart 1000+ flame fests used to be pretty insane, though...)

Daily Radar was decent. some of the guys from PC Accelerator Magazine (a guilty pleasure of all of us) wrote for them as well.

Theres some great sites like Gamespot, etc but they just dont have the soul of the earlier sites that had a more personal touch with the community. Everything is about revenue now...

Anyone remember Daily Radar. That site kicked ass. I was so pissed when it got took down. After that i mainly went to Voodoo Extreme, Gamespot, IGN, and Adrenaline Vault.

I remember the day when Netscape launched and moving to that from Lynx. What a trip. My earliest memories of game sites are Blues, Voodoo Extreme, Shack and the Adrenaline Vault.
