Bioshock (Not SS3) Announced

The BioShock First Look/Exclusive First Impressions on GameSpot has the promised announcement of the new project from Irrational Games, and though it is not the System Shock 3 announcement that had been anticipated, the game is described by Irrational's Ken Levine as the "spiritual successor" to System Shock 2. They offer first impressions of the game, said to be in development for three years now, as well as a video Q&A about the game with Ken that can streamed for free. Here's a bit from the preview:
BioShock takes place in a mysterious genetic laboratory. Other than that the complex is strewn with corpses (also for reasons unknown), nothing is clear to you. From what you can tell, the laboratory complex is apparently a holdover from World War II--you'll see remnants of the war as well as peeling paint throughout the complex. Something apparently happened back then that caused the complex to be abandoned by whoever was using it. In fact, the complex has only recently come back into use by the scientists circa the early 21st century, and advanced, top-secret contraptions used for arcane biotechnology experiments have been hastily bolted into the rotting walls of the complex.

You'll explore the complex from a first-person perspective, similar to System Shock 2 or Deus Ex, and you'll find it inhabited by three primary "castes" of creatures, which Irrational is currently referring to as "drones," "predators," and "soldiers"--creatures that might once have been human. We were shown a few concept images of creatures that were part human, part monster. Exactly how these creatures came to be this way isn't clear, but Irrational has suggested that some of them are actually fused with human anatomy: human lungs are grafted onto their bodies to breathe, and the human arm dangling off to the side can still hold and fire a gun.

Everyone happy with "just" a "spiritual successor"?

It's kinda like what Bioware is doing with their new PC project it being the "spiritual successor" of Baldur's Gate 2.

and what Troika is doing with their upcoming post-apocalyptic RPG

i think its a good way for developers to retain their particular legacies... too many money grubbing ass whore publishers getting in the way these days

Well - I hate to say this but there is NO WAY they could do a direct sequel to SS2 for the simple reason that EA holds the license to the game and refuses to relinquish them.

It's better than nothing.

Good enough. I'll miss SHODAN, but this will be as close as we get.

Hmmmm....on the one hand, I'm disappointed we're not getting another SS, but on the other, their idea does sound unique, and a spiritual successor to the SS series...

Go Irrational!

Except for the fact that the game Bioware is making is a RTS rather then a RPG you mean.

Damn. Can't they get around it? Like call it 'Shocking System 3' or something?

I think 'BioShock' is close enough, don't you?

Maybe they'll style as if it was a prequel.

actually - if you read the article, it sounds alot more like Half-Life than System Shock

and they are using the T:V engine for it

Well actually making an rts successor to the BG series makes sense because at the very very beginning they were actually setting out to make an rts.

On bioshock, I have died and gone to heaven both system shocks owned.

I am. Ikaruga was the spiritual successor to Radiant Silvergun, and it turned out just fine.

It's better than nothing at all.
And since it will follow in the footsteps of shock 2, made by the guys who did shock 2, I'm sure it will be plenty scary and immersive.

The only thing that doesn't thrill me is the whole setting. A WWII lab? Three castes of enemies? That just sounds boring, but it's hard to get an accurate view of a game from just a paragraph.

The good thing is, this has apparently been in development for 3+ years, so it should be coming out 'soon' (next year?) as opposed to having to wait for it for five years (like Dragon Age, since someone mentioned it)

good enough

I would have prefered SS3, I think everyone would have, including Irrational, but since bastard publishers have to be such pricks about it, at least we're getting a new and hopefully cool universe. I think that, as always, Irrational will pull it off with flying colours.

The screenshot looks very nice, as long as the game is released within the next year or so. It around the level of Doom 3 quality, or so it seems to me. The game descriptions also sounds very cool.

Way to go Irrational...

I'm disappointed but more games like system shock 2 is a good thing. It has to be as deep as ss2 and needs to have as good of a plot.

Well its sounds freakin cool. Is it me or does it sound more like Deus Ex then system shock, that not being a bad thing though. Bioshock Ex should rock

It doesn't matter. Even if its NOT system shock 3, ANY game created with the same ideas of game mechanics, storytelling, and crazily-good audio application will be fucking AMAZING. I am already stoked. A new SS game would have been cool, but I didn't care so much for the title of the game as the game's story, and you don't need SHODAN and Citadel Station to achieve what Irrational did in SS2.

I cannot fucking wait for this. I'm more excited about this than Half Life 2 or HALO 2. Come on Irrational, give us more!

having just watched the streaming interview with ken levine on gamespot, you're going to be disappointed. those aren't screenshots, they're concept art. and when it says it's been in "development for three years now", what ken really meant was they've been tinkering with the design document for 3 years. there's no working code for this game and i seriously doubt it will see the light of day in under a year.

this is not to be down on the game, however. i'm as big a fan of the SS series as the next geek. it's just that blues comment above misinterprets the truth of the interview, which was revealed in the streaming video of ken levine, and not the written gamespot piece.

just don't go holding your breath on this one yet cause it's still a long way off.

I was preparing myself for this, but I'm still upset about the way they hyped the announcement. And they don't have screen shots after 3 years? We won't be seeing this one for a while (2006 at least).

Just use good writers!

Yea, I don't think they've been actively working on the game for 3 years. More like "if we have any exttra time, we'll work on BioShock."

funny bit will be when, with another 20-30 game of the year awards, they got back to EA and said "bet you wished you fucking licensed us now fuckers!!!". I wanna be there
