Bioshock (Not SS3) Announced

The BioShock First Look/Exclusive First Impressions on GameSpot has the promised announcement of the new project from Irrational Games, and though it is not the System Shock 3 announcement that had been anticipated, the game is described by Irrational's Ken Levine as the "spiritual successor" to System Shock 2. They offer first impressions of the game, said to be in development for three years now, as well as a video Q&A about the game with Ken that can streamed for free. Here's a bit from the preview:
BioShock takes place in a mysterious genetic laboratory. Other than that the complex is strewn with corpses (also for reasons unknown), nothing is clear to you. From what you can tell, the laboratory complex is apparently a holdover from World War II--you'll see remnants of the war as well as peeling paint throughout the complex. Something apparently happened back then that caused the complex to be abandoned by whoever was using it. In fact, the complex has only recently come back into use by the scientists circa the early 21st century, and advanced, top-secret contraptions used for arcane biotechnology experiments have been hastily bolted into the rotting walls of the complex.

You'll explore the complex from a first-person perspective, similar to System Shock 2 or Deus Ex, and you'll find it inhabited by three primary "castes" of creatures, which Irrational is currently referring to as "drones," "predators," and "soldiers"--creatures that might once have been human. We were shown a few concept images of creatures that were part human, part monster. Exactly how these creatures came to be this way isn't clear, but Irrational has suggested that some of them are actually fused with human anatomy: human lungs are grafted onto their bodies to breathe, and the human arm dangling off to the side can still hold and fire a gun.

Is any one else getting tired of people in the future being pre occupied with Nazis?
yup, how about post-Iraq instead, scenarios could postulate "what if" Iraq / Iran / N. Korea goes really really bad.

Is it just me or is the concept around this game tired?

Why not place the entire game inside a uterus? Then, as the invader- we could be the Bi0-C0ck!

funny bit will be when, with another 20-30 game of the year awards, they got back to EA and said "bet you wished you fucking licensed us now fuckers!!!".

Yeah, but then EA turns around and points out that this game sold less than 10% of any of their releases.

The computer gaming industry isn't always fair to the great games, as the SS series proves.

Wait, so Ken got in at Thief? How the hell did he pull that off? Where's the door straight into his job, and how do I open it?

After reading the whole article...

The lab itself WAS a WWII lab; though I don't think they specified it was an old Nazis lab. After all, the US might have been up to super-soldier stuff too.

But they say it's been occupied by modern-day (or slightly future) scientists. They've reactivated it and started doing experiments.

So, maybe the real weirdness is the current scientists' fault. Maybe they were building off the work the place was originally used for. Maybe it's something completely different. I don't think it was that specific.

It sounds interesting, but I miss Shodan. That voice was awesome. I'd love a voice synth that sounded like that, with the random stuttering. I'd use it to make ALL of my system sounds.

The concept drawings have German writing on the walls, so I'd guess it would be German.

Y'know, if it's set in the near future, they could shove in an insane machine running the place (possible more likely a hive mind type thing)... the first look inidcates the design is somewhat a fusion between biological, rotting WW2 and shiney near-future tech.

The only thing that doesn't thrill me is the whole setting. A WWII lab?

He's going to have to drop me a line and let me know what email he used to register -- doesn't seem to be @irrationalgames.com.

I really don't get the fixation with sequals. Personally I prefer a new IP, a new world to explore, than a sequal...I guess the mayority here likes sequals now.
My, how the times have changed.

I like many others here would have preferred a System Shock 3, but I can imagine what idiots EA are being about it. I'm sure this game will be very good as well and as I haven't been disappointed with anything Irrational has done now, I'm sure it will be great. After all, they are the "spiritual successor" to Looking Glass right?

If you want to sell your Saturn, keep the game,it's so hard to come by.

Wow,somebody who actually mentions/knows about Radiant Silvergun. That was on kick-ass game, its a legend on the Saturn.BTW goes away mostly for no less than 150-200$ on ebay...

Yep, and the odd part is, it's worth every penny.

I got my copy in a trade deal... and now that I'm thinking of selling my Saturn, I still don't want to give the game up. I'm secretly holding out for the announcement of a port or a Treasure compilation collection, or something. But of course, if a port gets announced, it won't sell for as high as it does. Catch-22s...

SS2 has been begging for a sequel since it came out (it being the scariest - most intelligent RPG/FPS ever). I'm really looking forward to this, and the references to past classics like bioforge, deus ex and even ultima have got me slobbering like a teenage fanboy. I'm chuffed to bits that the controversy over who owned what licence-wise (EA or Irrational) hasn't killed off this property - and that it will live on - albeit in spirit. I recently had to curtail my involvement with an SS2 style mod for Doom 3 called Sapphire Scar ('cos I just couldn't find the time)but I know a lot of people will be shocked, surprised and amazed that Bioshock is coming. Bring it on.
Old enough to know better, young enough not to care.
