Bioshock (Not SS3) Announced

The BioShock First Look/Exclusive First Impressions on GameSpot has the promised announcement of the new project from Irrational Games, and though it is not the System Shock 3 announcement that had been anticipated, the game is described by Irrational's Ken Levine as the "spiritual successor" to System Shock 2. They offer first impressions of the game, said to be in development for three years now, as well as a video Q&A about the game with Ken that can streamed for free. Here's a bit from the preview:
BioShock takes place in a mysterious genetic laboratory. Other than that the complex is strewn with corpses (also for reasons unknown), nothing is clear to you. From what you can tell, the laboratory complex is apparently a holdover from World War II--you'll see remnants of the war as well as peeling paint throughout the complex. Something apparently happened back then that caused the complex to be abandoned by whoever was using it. In fact, the complex has only recently come back into use by the scientists circa the early 21st century, and advanced, top-secret contraptions used for arcane biotechnology experiments have been hastily bolted into the rotting walls of the complex.

You'll explore the complex from a first-person perspective, similar to System Shock 2 or Deus Ex, and you'll find it inhabited by three primary "castes" of creatures, which Irrational is currently referring to as "drones," "predators," and "soldiers"--creatures that might once have been human. We were shown a few concept images of creatures that were part human, part monster. Exactly how these creatures came to be this way isn't clear, but Irrational has suggested that some of them are actually fused with human anatomy: human lungs are grafted onto their bodies to breathe, and the human arm dangling off to the side can still hold and fire a gun.

I remember BioForge, it had alot of atmosphere, but was over a bit fast if I remember. Going way way back, one of my all time favorites was Alternate Reality: The City. An RPG that would have modular sequals that added to the existing content. They eventualy came out with Alternate Reality: The Dungeon which was all the underground content, then I think they ran out of money or something. It used special Atari 800 / 400 coding to give it more colors then was normaly possible at the time so it looked incredible on an Atari but the ports to other computers looked terrible.

This game sounds interesting. If it does well I'm sure it will pave the way to a System Shock 3 down the road.

Hey, mr. Levine: I have to say that I love the concepts you guys are working with; you haven't by any chance been reading books by Steve Johnson (Emergence) and Stephen Wolfram, have you?

And in those three years of (pre)production, have you started prototyping the actual game or has that been paper-design?

Dunno if you're allowed to answer that, but I'm just curious...

Wonder if this one's coming out for Xbox as well. I'm sure all those 13 year olds with low attenton spans from falling off their scateboards and watching MTV too much would love a simplified concept, small level, long load time, console interfaced, shitty textured version of the game for both PC and the 'box. This has to be the way forwards, right? Oh, and go lite on the horror okay, we want as broad an age demographic as possible, thnx.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion I guess.

I personally love the slower pace as it allows you to get more involved in the story. If I want mindless killing without a plot, I'll play Doom3.

I really enjoyed System Shock 2, but i still feel like that it, and Deus Ex are both RPGs played from an FPS point of view (as reviews have stated). The gameplay just isn't fast enough as far as combat goes. The fighting is very straightforward, the AI sucks, and there aren't many targets around. The combat is just not the focus.

Not enough for me anyway. So, I'm looking forward to this game of course, but I would much prefer the very first action-oriented FPS/RPG game. We've had SS2, Deus Ex 1 and 2, and now here comes Vampire Bloodlines. None of these games really focus on combat that much. I'd like to see a new approach, not an updated old favorite. (My ideal game would probably be the action carnage of Diablo, combined with the character growth depth of Neverwinter Nights, and the first-person shooter action of something like Unreal 2004.)

Of course, if Bioshock comes with great mod support, then we can do this all on our own

This looks like it might be a fun game!
It's about time somebody built a game that combined all the flavor of a good first person shooter with resident evil!

Not to sound like I fanboy, but I've always loved thriller games.
Too bad Doom 3 was so fucking dark...

Dungeon Master FTL and Eye of the Beholder SSI came out WAY before UltimaUnderworld, but Church is sure an underated guy and a genius so I see where you would say that.

Also Ken you outta see if you can buy the rights to remake UU or even colaborate with Church on a update if possible,
and while your at it throw in a partridge and a pear tree lol jk.....

Nice to see you pop in here Ken and Kudos to T:V im like enjoying it like i did the first Tribes but mabey even bttr.

Question, you wrote the entire storyboard for T:V ? which if so, you should look into some serious screen writing cause your wit is keen, also the voices are spot on in most places with a few hic-ups here & there <cross fingers for patch>

Oh about my dislike for FreedomForce, i didnt mean to say it was bad game rather the reverse but I guess I lost my steam with the game. but agian as one of the few decent superhero type games i give you credit for making it but i will not be buying the sequal

LONGLIVE SS2...one of the all time best even a mod out that remade all the graphics hehe its nice.

Is it a coincidence that BioShock SOUNDS exactly like a combination of Bioforge and SS?

Can we come work for you?
Why did you let Gamespot hurt us so? Did marketing make you do it?

Don't even try to deny that you're gonna use datapads. And paperdolls.

Hey Guys-

Wish I could take credit for things I didn't do, but BioForge came out before I even got in the industry. My resume of shipped or soon to be shipped titles is limited to Thief, Shock 2, Freedom Force, Tribes: Vengeance, SWAT 4, and Freedom Force vs. The 3rd Reich...

-kl

and in my view the game that started this genre was Ultima Underworld, conceived by true Game Gods like Doug Church and Paul Neurath.

yes it was I who brought it to the attention here about the simular connection but was wrong on the developer.

As well as Bioforge how bout a game that made it all possible DUNGEONMASTER!!!!!!!!!! or SUNDOG!!!!!!!!

Now there are some good games no one remade but my all time fav game hands down is ROUGE which was very simple you make it all the way down 26 random levels to get the sword simple but FUN.

cant forget Archon or MULE and Elite while were at it lol

Except Bioforge was a horrible GAME with excellent visuals and story-telling (it does sound a hell of lot like BioShock though, cyborgs instead of mutants) while the Shock games (not Creature Shock, mind you) had gameplay and atmosphere. Some of the mechanics (actually, most of the mechanics) of Bioforge drove me nuts, the fighting system, the swapping inventory, the time limits, the running vs. walking controls: AARRGGHH!

Well, I know one thing for certain: BioShock will have lots and lots of data pads lying around!

EDIT: While we're resurrecting Origin's old product lines, could we get a Wing Commander VI? Hire Volition to do it! Keep DS away! Oh god, I hope I haven't given the bastard a horrible idea!

Damn, Origin was great - ruined by FMV crap, but once great.

that's exactly what i was thinking... bioforge was supposed to have a sequel but it never materialized... maybe this game will be a "spiritual successor" to more than just system shock.

Origin systems made a game in 1995 called Bioforge. It was a "Alone in the dark" style adventure game. It is described much like Irrational described Bioshock. Looking glass combined/bought Origin if I recall. Perhaps Levine worked on Bioforge for Origin way back when.

Bioforge + System Shock = Bioshock.

For me, both were very memorable games. I'm totally pumped.

I'm a bit disappointed that it's not SS3 but it sounds pretty cool and very unique. The concept is interesting and the game sounds right freaky. I haven't really played one of those in a while. The last one was probably System Shock 2, actually I don't think the WWII thing will be a problem. If done right, it could make a cool Fallout-ish past meets future vibe for the game.

We bury our sins here, Dave. We wash them clean.
Who knows but that, on the lower frequencies, I speak for you?
