WoW Open Beta Soon

The World of Warcraft Community Site has news that Blizzard will soon be accepting sign-ups for the North American open beta testing of this upcoming MMORPG (thanks JeffC). Word simply is: "More details will become available in the days ahead, so stay tuned."

I think a 4-6 week open beta is too long to hope for. My guess is it's 1-2 weeks, probably starting on Nov 1st.

1. "NEXT FRIDAY" -- pure speculation. If you're right it was a lucky guess.

Ok, when it starts next Friday tell me it was lucky. I've been saying this on these boards for sometime now. Nothing new. Vivendi was serious when they said it has to ship by the end of November a few months ago. So a 4-6 week open beta was an easy inference. It's not rocket science if you understand the game industry and its patterns.

You are right. The game is not ready now. Thats why its still in beta. Open/closed ... no matter.

2. "even though it's not ready" -- Er... and why not?

The game isn't ready at it's current state. The patches coming out will fix this, of course, but if they released the game today it wouldn't be ready. There are classes that have no talents. There are major bugs with the new graphics system/bloom for some users (they have blurring problems, the map turns green, etc). A whole lotta quests have <needs reward> and give you nothing. Some vendors say <needs vendor list>. The shapeshifting of the druid keeps breaking so you can't toggle it.

I certainly agree with the original poster, the game isn't ready. _BUT_ you bet your ass I'd be first in line to buy the game if they released it today. It's still very fun, there's a lot of content compared to other MMORPGS, and it's just beautiful. I fully expect the upcoming patches to fix most of these problems and finish the talents just in time for release, so I'm not worried about it.

NEXT FRIDAY. It'll last for a month. Game goes gold on November 15th (even though it's not ready) and ships to retailers for beginning of December in time for the Xmas holiday. This will be the first title Blizzard has shipped that isn't ready. It's no wonder everyone was jumping ship a while back.

1. "NEXT FRIDAY" -- pure speculation. If you're right it was a lucky guess.

2. "even though it's not ready" -- Err... and why not? Is the game playable? Yes. Is the game fun? Yes. Has extensive testing been performed on the game? God yes. I'm not sure how you can imply this.

There is much content which is intentionally being left out of BETA and only being tested internally. Plus, they have several more weeks to continue fixing bugs before release AND after release. It's no different than patches being released for Doom3, BF1942, UT, etc...

3. "This will be the first title Blizzard has shipped that isn't ready." -- This game is as ready as any of the other Blizzard products.

4. "It's no wonder everyone was jumping ship a while back." -- Who is everyone? You read 99% of the posts from people who have participated in BETA or STRESS and they are overly excited that this game is coming soon.

I think overall you simply have no idea what you are talking about.

Dude, you're worse than me. My list runs from your Merian 59 to Neocron, but adds Eve and SWG. Least played was SWG, I quit that in no time flat. Longest EQ. Favourite AO. Kinda wonder how Mimesis turned out. They had an interesting LOOK but the interface was horrible.

EDIT: and just got into the European beta of WOW.

NEXT FRIDAY. It'll last for a month.

A blizzard rep is quoted on the WoW forum saying that 'patches' will be released prior to open beta.

edit - post five in this thread:

2nd edit - I can't believe that link works.

In the past there has been at least one week between patches so...

If they go gold in November then there will be a lot of content left out.

Mmogs get sooo repetitive so quickly, you exhaust the unique content in about 3 months, after which it becomes the same old same old.

So why not play for 3 months and be done with the damn thing? I plan on doing exactly that and having a blast for what its worth.

after burning out on a dozen other mmogs over the years i'm tempted to jump back in once again with this one, if for no other reason than to say "aye i played WoW"... yet i can already tell e-x-a-c-t-l-y how it will go.

You hook up with a good, active, fun, mature guild to do stuff with, then after about 3 months you get to the point where you log in and ask yourself - "ok what do i want to do today" - and you can't think of a Single fun thing to do anymore. Another quest, another hunting party, another level, another siege. *yawn*

Damn it Blizzard. Now your gona have me checking the site 100 times a day! Heheh

Played ST loved the game. Comining from UO, AC1, AC2, SWG, Linage 2.. so I have had my fair share of mmos. I'll say wow is the most fun I have had since AC2. If wow is like EQ im glad I never played it becuase now I can experiance it through another developer =p.

The problem with some of you players is that your on PVE, it's so lame. Once you have a high lvl player, then what? Raids are ok in PVE though suck compared to PVP. PVP is where you can show off your high lvl player and have so much more fun. After I checked out the PVP server and made a Night Elf Warrior, I haven't gone back to PVE lvl 43 Night Elf Druid. It's just so much fun when anything can happen no matter where your are(except alliance land). Yesterday I was minding my own buisness when a Tauren Druid crossed my path in Ashenvale. Hehe, no match for my warrior

The problem is not every developer does an open beta for people overseas, or only for people who signed up before.
plus I dont want to base my opinion on a bug ridden unbalanced beta clickfest.

All MMORPG developers should release a demo of their game before official release or right after, that is limited to 1 week or so or a demo server where you cant go over level 5 or so. I need a new MMORPG for the winter but I dont want to spend $50 for every single game out there just to find out which fits my taste.
But I already know why they dont do something like that...

Why not just play the open beta for a few weeks. If you don't like it you won't have to dish out the $50 for the actual game.

I've been playing WoW for a few months now, and I'm still having fun.

Same here. Up until the tornado and then the latest patch the game seemed to be very close to done.

Now the beta server seems to be down every other night for 20-30 minutes at a time. Many quests that were broken are fixed but now fishing is broken. They have improved the looting tools available with auto-rolling/passing, need before greed, etc.

They've added the ability for groups larger than 5 - raids. I've been in two so far - the drop off in experience is not worth the extra team members IMO. A raid of 15 lvl 20-25 doing the deadmines takes the fun out of the instance IMO.

My main character is level 35 and it looks like I will need to level him at least 5 more times before any really interesting abilities become available. Prior to this it was 2 levels max before that new skill was mine.

Because of this I'm focusing on accumulating money for a mount. I play regulary with a guy that will easily have the money for a mount at level 40. If I don't keep money wise he'll outrun me all the time.

This guy plays on a 56K modem and seems to have pretty good connectivity by the way...

I absolutely can not wait for this game to come out! I think I'm going to take a two week vacation when it goes live so I can get my fill of the game.
