"Shocking" Irrational Announcement Tomorrow?

There's a System Shock 2 Retrospective on GameSpot (thanks Ant) that looks back at the highly regarded action/RPG sequel. According to the article's conclusion, this interest is more than academic, as they tease plans for an announcement related to all this tomorrow:
But why even look back at System Shock 2 at this point? Because Irrational has been, and it plans to make a related announcement this Friday (tomorrow). The studio has decided that it wishes to further what it started in System Shock 2--to work on games that promote "emergent" gameplay--open-ended exploration that offers many choices and combinations of options to players. You'll see what we mean tomorrow. Be sure to come back then.

How dare you compare Doom3 to SystemShock2!!! That's like comparing a dried turd to a brick of gold! Doom3 is that turd - twisted and petrified into a pile of shit 100 turds high. Puke! Carmack stick to rockets please!!!

Hmmmm....on the one hand, I'm disappointed we're not getting another SS, but on the other, their idea does sound unique, and a spiritual successor to the SS series...

The Babel fish is your friend:

As admits today became, the first fans already work on a modification for Doom 3. The long-longed third part to the Action Shooter system Shock is in makes momentary and is based on the Doom 3-Engine. The moreover one still industrious people are needed, those the work on system Shock 3: Inside the Darkness propel. Standing simply down follow left and announce you to young, if interest exists.

I noticed an odd line in an older news post in the Irrational Games website (http://www.irrationalgames.com/ - 1st october news post) -
Also new in the world of Irrational, three of our games currently in development will appear at the World Cyber Games Championship Expo in San Francisco. This event will take place from October 7th through 10th and show off many soon-to-be-released games from a variety of developers. There are tournaments, product and game exhibits, open gaming and prizes, which are always a good thing. So if you are in the SF area and want to get a sneak peek at Freedom Force vs. The 3rd Reich, SWAT 4 and Tribes: Vengeance, check it out.

Irrational's Bill Gardner will be there to present Freedom Force, so if you see him you should feel free to ask many, many questions about why Irrational has not come out with System Shock 3. More information on the expo can be found at the expo official web site.

Curious that they mention it...

Irrational inherited the "emergent gameplay" concept from Looking Glass and I'm glad to see they're finally turning their considerable talents in that direction. I think a System Shock 3 is the only game I would ever have considered a perfect match for an id engine. Doom 3 is practically System Shock 3 anyway (except for being boring, and repetitive of course).

I don't know what to say... This news is just.... It's just hot.

Whether each individual title is all we expected or not, look at what Irrational has done recently: resurrected the SWAT, TRIBES and now possibly the SS franchises. How can you not like the direction they're moving in?

From reading that, it doesn't sound like it'll be SS3, but perhaps it'll be some new property that plays similarly. I believe the rights to the SS franchise are still stuck in legal limbo.

AFAIK System Shock is owned by EA Games - I remember them forcing a Doom3 system shock mod (now renamed Sapphire Scar, I believe) to close down.

WWHHHHAAAAA!!!!!

All I can get to work is the intro, this damn game is teasing me just like Irrational and Valve!

The sound test rocked though...

Maybe instead of getting to play this game I'll write an essay about the sexual dynamics of the SHODAN/Hacker relationship...I am such a nerd.

I almost seems like it has to be System Shock 3. Teasing people with memories of one of the best games EVER and then saying "haha, fooled you" would piss a whole lot of people off. Their forums would spontaneously combust. If it is System Shock 3, though, it had better be good, it had better be scary, and it had better not have tiny little levels that have to load up every thirty seconds.

It better be System Shock 3 if Irrational wants me to forgive them for the travesty that is Tribes : Vengeance! <in whiney nerd dialect>

Edit: But really if it's not SS3 then my caboose is really gonna be chapped!

On an interesting note, on the last photo in that gamespot article it says, "So, why look back at System Shock 2? Come back tomorrow and find out." Hmmmmm Oo

...an X-box exclusive.
=p
Or even worse, developed for both platforms simultaneously... At least if they focus on one or the other they end up with a decent PC/console game.
