Counter-Strike: Source Steam Release

Valve sends word that the promised Steam pre-orders for Half-Life 2 are now underway. As described in the announcement about the pre-order plans (story), Counter-Strike: Source is included in all three different levels of participation, and this updated version of the tactical combat mod that comprises Half-Life 2 multiplayer is available immediately.

Wouldn't it be funny if Valve now after getting all our money for the half-life to preload on steam- Turn around and delay the game again I got a feeling....

Ok so let me get this straight.... The Bronze steam version of hl2 is identical to what the regular boxed version is going to bring right? Also, HL:S, dod:s, and tfc:s all wont be free?

1. Theres quite a few maps, I've seen about 6 or 7 so far, unfortunatly no assault (BTW the maps are redone, not just thrown into a new engine, they re-created them to make them more immersive)

4. You dont have to wait, you can download it right now, but you cant play it until release. The point of slow connections was to preload it so that you dont have to be downloading like 4 gigs come release...but you are going to have to download about 6cds worth of content if you purchase through steam sooner or later.

5. The games not out, so nobody can give you a HL2 box...

6. Theres no cheats...yet, there werent any for the entire beta period (except console commands which they removed) so dont expect any now. The headshots are a part of CS, insta death is very apparent in this game, and it seems even harder now then it was before in HL1 engine (I've been playing since beta was released)

I can answer #3 - no bots yet, but the code is there and they will apparently be added 'in a future update'.

If bots were already in, I'd have bought this today - they're much more fun than playing on a server full of tards.

They should have turned it on at 6am or something, that way the west coast would still be sleeping. Everyone in the country is hammering their servers at the same time.

Damn, the rest of the world disappeared?

OK, I'm starting to break...would the scabs please answer some questions:

1. How many maps are in CS:S?

2. Are the CS:CZ maps and weapons in the silver CS:S or are they only in the old engine? I never bought CS:CZ, so that would new content for me, but who is going to play new content on the old engine?

3. Are the bot modes from CS:CZ in CS:S?

4. Does it seem like if I purchase Silver I can download just CS:S and/or CS:CZ and wait to download the pre-load for HL2? My DSL is only 256k (the little k), do I don't want to download six CDs.

5. Anyone who must have the retail version willing to sell me the box? I want the box, I want to play now, I'm tearing apart at the seams!

6. Are people cheating already? I mean really cheating, not owning people people because they are good, but "headshot!""headshot!""headshot!""headshot!""headshot!""headshot!""headshot!""headshot!""headshot!""headshot!""headshot!""headshot!""headshot!"

P.S. Halo's SP experience is so damn good, I should have bought an Xbox years ago for this. MP is full of cheating duchebags though (just like regular CS!)

I like pie.

It's not enough that some people have CS:Source and I don't, but now they are tanunting me about pie (which I also don't have any of right now).

Dammit, I hope you get walkhacked.

Your making me resort to PlanetSide (and the euro server appears to be, erm empty). I hope you are happy with yourself.

Actually in reply to one message below I've written and managed online billing systems that process credit cards overseas, I know what's involved and what the common problems are, usually it's that most systems are fairly shonkely built (I know this from looking at quite a few systems written by others) or use 3rd rate companies to do the actual authorisation.

Many of them do just crap out like that if they can't handle the load, which is awful, they should of course give the correct reason, which is they are too busy but they don't want admit they are 3rd rate and don't have sufficient capacity to handle the load. It could be the auth vendor is returning those messages to Steam, if it is, they have every right to quite substantial compensation (I hope they follow up on that if that's the case, still it's there fault for choosing a poor vendor to do it for them if it is that).

In comparison with other online gaming vendors, I would point out that NC Soft did a first rate problem free job even while still in beta AFAIC and SOE's billing system is better too (if still so-so as - following a re-design of the billing system it now fails on some of my cards, but never on others, though it takes more types of card than Steam does).

So no, I honestly don't think it's simply 'to be expected', judging not just by own experience, but more relevantly by the competition.

More interestingly on to the physics in HL:Source...:

Valve have said HL:S will take advantage of at least some of the new 'physics' effects in the Source engine. I'm sure they will limit the parameters for certain values to ensure some kind of consistent (i.e. non-broken) experience, and it will probably mostly consist of things like new rag doll effects I would think (so as not to 'break' the gameplay).

I too hope someone does re-do the textures. I think it's a hell of a lot of work to ask of a mod community, but definitely possible. I do agree that HL2 should be the immediate priority, I would have thought the team had the HL2 art work largely in the can for quite a while now though, you'd think they would be just itching to re-do the textures though.

Actually, on the topic of HL:S and physics, I tried to re-play HL recently on Steam (at 1600x1200). I found when I play it above 1024x768 it regularly screws up the gameplay totally. Above ~1024x768 there are all sorts of places my character get's stuck in the ground (places with more complex ground surfaces, or where there is water you can stand up in in particular). After getting stuck 4-5 times I got fed up and stopped replaying it because I was sick of having to load back save points and try stuff again, hoping not to get stuck again.

I never had that with the original, and wasn't able to trigger it at 800x600. *Seems* to have been broken for ages, but nobody cares. Perhaps it's just something odd about my setup, it was such a problem for me I was surprised it had not come up for lots of users.

Hollowguy: Yeah it works fine with SOE still just tested. :-( Thanks though. It's weird that I didn't have a problem with getting CS:CZ (and of course I only care because I want to play more with the Source engine ;-)). As you suggest I will call my mastercard vendor I think though, they usually can't tell me all that much when there is a problem, but i think they might be able to tell if it's something like address information being presented oddly. Good to hear that others in the UK are doing okay. Wish I hadn't closed that other Mastercard+Visa account now, whaa! :-(

You can't have physics in HL:S, the gameplay would be completely broken, you people should try using your brain every now and then

HL2's physics have been added to HL:S. Everyone who has played the leaked HL:S last year can confirm that.

@madeus -

I'm sure you've handle this, but I thought I would mention it anyway. You stated that it was a newer version of your old credit card. Did you activate it? Even if it's the same card - they require activation to make sure it didn't arrive in someone else's hands during shipping. Just something to eliminate as a possible problem.

Other than that - I would think about calling your bank to rule out any problems on their end before trying to problem solve on Valve's end. I would imagine that "chaotic" would be a good way to describe Valve at this point in time.

I just purchased the silver- But i never played the First Counter Strike- So this is pretty cool. But I'm wondering How much of Half-Life 2 is preloaded already onto our computers? Are we going to see more Half-Life 2 preloads on steam? Or is it all done?
You sound like me. I'm considering buying the Silver edition and having some fun with CS:Source despite I have only played the original a little on a LAN. The last real game I bought was Battlefield 1942. I'm sort of moving away from gaming but HL2 might get me hooked again.

It's cool enough to merit replaying it through judging from the beta.
