Out of the Blue

While TiVo's suggestions can often be related to other things that I have chosen to record, I have also grown used to it picking suggested shows for me that no one in his right mind would watch... my cynical side figures this is just payola that keeps the wheels of the whole system greased. However, I cannot for the life of me figure out why my TiVo has suddenly decided I speak Spanish, because in spite of never recording, nor even watching, programming in a language I do not understand (I took French in school, and I can't even understand that), it suddenly seems quite fond of recording all manner of Latino programming for me.

Oh well, there are all sorts of stories about people learning a new language from TV (Splash, for instance), so maybe I should just watch them all for the educational experience.

Oh, as for TiVo vs Replay -- I think Blue made the right choice . You'll pry our 2 TiVos from our cold, dead hands.

If you have DirecTV, I can understand it. Otherwise ReplayTV is clearly the way to go for anyone who is computer savvy. I think the comparison between Macs and PCs are appropriate. Macs/TiVos for special situations or novice users, PCs/ReplayTV for the more geeky users.

The truth is brutal. Prepare for pain.

Wow, he must be awesome - I found a copy of Dark Star signed by O'Bannon... for $500! And he didn't even write the book (Alan Dean Foster wrote it as an adaptation of the film).

http://www.frugalbooks.com/si/008248.html

I guess I'll have to settle for the used copy I found for $1.30.

I went over to gamespot and found this article: http://www.gamespot.com/features/6109881/index.html?q=1&tag=gs_pc_flashtop_story

The article basically covers the development of System Shock 2. That's cool and all by itself but look at this quote:

According to general manager Ken Levine, the studio began its life in his living room in 1997, when he and fellow employees Jonathan Chey and Rob Fermier of now-defunct Looking Glass Entertainment decided to leave their employer to form their own company, which would go on to develop a game called System Shock 2--a game we'll take a retrospective look at in anticipation of Irrational's next project, which we'll reveal to you exclusively tomorrow. (Here's a hint: it will likely please fans of System Shock 2.)

Does this mean System Shock 3 is in development? Sure hope so.

Directed by a young John Carpenter and written by Dan O'Bannon (the guy who ended up writing Alien.

If you have the latest Alien box set (or the 2 disc version of Alien that came out around the same time) there's some great interviews with O'Bannon, where he touches briefly on DS, and how Alien started. He seems like a very likeable (honest) guy, and as wonderful as Alien ended up being, I think he's awesome...

Anyone ever see the war of the worlds TV series? It was kinda cheezy 80's sci fi starring a guy named Jared Martin.
Wow, I thought I was the only one that remembered that show.

Since we are all talking about science fiction.

Anyone ever see the war of the worlds TV series? It was kinda cheezy 80's sci fi starring a guy named Jared Martin.

I been looking all over for it. No torrent, no emule. Some guy on ebay with a PAL version for $50.

The show got canceled in what I always thought was a weird way. The final episode of the first season, they discovered the aliens they were fighting were just some bozo's. The REAL aliens were on earth looking for dinner.

Yup. There were here to eat us. Then the next season starts and it was all gone! They redid the entire series, fired half the people. Destroyed the show basically.

I always wondered if someone let the cat out of the bag talking about alien invaders looking for din din. The aliens stopped the TV show so the secret would not get out.

Another TV show like that you never hear about? The invaders. Another alien invasion with only one guy who knows. That was a 60's or 70's show. Cheezy but cool because it was made when people were still people instead of the bubbleheads and pansy boys passing for actors these days.

Hey - it's out!

I've never seen Zardoz but the other movie it's packaged with, Dark Star, was one of my alltime favorite sci-fi books. The movie itself was made for next to nothing (started as a student film) but it's still not bad - not as good as the book of course but still funny and interesting. Directed by a young John Carpenter and written by Dan O'Bannon (the guy who ended up writing Alien.

Now I've got to look for that book.

Anyone here a boxer? I've always wanted to give it a try. SCU has a boxing club so I'm gonna attend their first workout of the year this evening. Just curious what other peoples experiences with the sport have been.

I never did any “professional amateur” stuff, but I did train for a good 3 years with a Golden Gloves winner. I still almost daily do everything (except the jump rope aerobics, I am still too paranoid about my knee to try it again). Guarantee you it will be a GREAT workout, and I personally find it incredibly fun to!

I have not done any sparing since the injury, but going wicked on Speed, Double End and Punching bag is great.

At the gym I workout I convinced my buddy who is a co-owner to let me do a little engineering project at the gym’s expense. I designed and built a track system that two heavy bags ride on (when I train I put a tether in-between them as a sorta trip line I have to dodge under). One side is a straight run you can go forwards and back, it then goes around a corner and begins to weave left and right. Quite fun and I am proud of my work!

I have been thinking lately about making a video of me playing on the Speed & Double End bag’s, it is some fairly impressive looking stuff.

I love the stuff, the training aspect of it, is great!
Though, I have met a few people that are total asses and think they are hot shots, they get annoying really quick.

But it is worth it, by far.

*edit*
The most important tip I can give you, learn to punch well before you learn to punch hard….or it is gonna hurt...a lot.

I really enjoyed the original Star Trek series and the movies (I-VI) back in the day. Except for Star Trek V, which was sickeningly bad. Shatner directed that one incidentally.

Shatner was the shit as Cap'n Kirk, especially during those fight scenes on the original TV series. But any time I saw Shatner being himself, on a TV interview or whatever, I just couldn't beleive what an idiot he was. He's got the worst sense of humor. He's one strange dude. I don't blame the rest of the cast. I wouldn't want to work with him either.

You poor bastard. Have you recovered from the mental anguish and the hernias caused by lifting the damned thing?

God I hate PS/2s. Worked with far too many of them in a school and corporate setting. They were solidly built, but for no good reason and their internals were just utter crap.

At least the Model 30 wasn't one of the MicroChannel monstrosities. ISA/EISA may have been bad, but MCA was worse. Gods.

YES! i've been watching LOST, the only tv show i make a Point to watch!

yes, it is an awesome show. a combo of Gilligan's Island, Survivor, and X-Files. i like that it is slow paced, has many complex characters, lots of unknowns, and a couple of "mysteries" going on... not bad for only 3 shows into the season...

Calling the local shop where it was built (shoulda built it myself, but I was still in my 'early days'), the guy checked it over, installed some new drivers and declared it fixed, only to bring it home, anxiously, and find it had not done a damn thing.

I have such a similar story.

I bought a P2/233 towards the end of High School; custom built job at a computer show. I didn't know enough back then to do it myself.

Anyway, after about 6 months, the fan on the power supply starting making a HORRIBLE noise. I tried cleaning the area out and what-not, but no luck. I was able to figure out, thought, that it was the exhaust fan on the powersupply.

So I bring it back to the people with my receipt (it was a 30 minute drive) and told them the problem. I said "the power supply is shot. it makes a loud noise when I turn it on, the fan goes crazy." The pleasant Korean man behind the counter said it would be ready in 2 days. They would replace it with a new one.

I come back 2 days later, they said the power supply was replaced and it was fine now. It was still under warrantee so no charge. I bring it back home so I can get back to doing my homework and gaming, plug it in, and... BAM! Problem is still there. I check the S/N on the power supply, and it's the same one.

I come back, pissed off. I say "the problem is still there! The power supply is the same one. What the hell." The apologize and said it would be ready in another 2 days. This time, I placed a dab of whiteout on the power supply (and a tiniest un-noticeable dab on the fan itself), took a picture of the thing with it's S/N, and brought it in.

I get it back in 2 days, the power supply is still there as is the same fan. It is still making the noise. But the real kicker??? They replaced my motherboard, CPU, and RAM with someone else's. I now had a regular Pentium 200 MMX in there, with half the RAM. I was PISSED! I called them up and demanded to speak to the manager. He didn't know how to respond. I said I was going to take this matter to the Better Business Bureau and he panicked.

He told me to bring the PC in again and they would put everything back within 30 minutes and give me twice my original RAM as compensation.

Long story somewhat abbreviated, I wound up having to replace the Power Supply myself, as they STILL didn't do it for me. Since then, I custom build all of my PC's. The only computers I buy prefab are my Powerbooks. And I ever go to computer shows anymore, as that experience and one other have proven to me that al of the vendors there are complete a$$holes.

Just wondering about the different video cards everyone has gone through....

hmmm... here's mine:

S3 Virge onboard 3D chipset (P166mmx, oc's to 200)
Hercules Stingray 128 VoodooRush 12MB (same)
CLabs Voodoo 2 8MB (same)
eVGA GeForce2 MX 32MB (PIII 800)
CLabs GeForce2 GTS 64MB (same)
ATI Radeon 8500 64MB (same)
eVGA GeForce FX 5600 ultra 128MB (P4.19)
eVGA GeForce 6800 GT 256MB (same)

thanks, warhawk... that was a trip into the past i haven't taken in a while... i still remember buying the hercules card to play Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire, (which i believe was the first game to ever *require* a 3D card???) and to play GLQuake... i remember bitching out the CompUSA salesman that sold me my $4,000 toshiba system complaining that it was only 4 months old and i was already upgrading it, when he had promised me it had all i needed to play the latest 3D games. at the time, i was an internet virgin and hadn't played a PC game since commander keen! i bought it knowing nothing about what i was getting into, and haven't bought a pre-built system since.

ahhh... the not-so-good old days!
