UK Half-Life 2 DVD Only?

A post on Halflife2.net (thanks Stoo) reports they've received indications from U.K. retailers that the Half-Life 2 will be released in the U.K. on DVD only. They don't have word on the remainder of Europe, though they point out and that the Far Cry CD edition was not sold across the pond either.

I don't see how this game could be so large it can only be distributed in a DVD format.
Looks like they know how to get the old Steam system pumping. Limit the options.

Damn, I find it an insult that the U.S gets all these CD versions while UK and most of Euro, gets the DVD versions of games. Seriously, I hope they realize how lucky they are. While they use 1, say it again, one, uno, 1 disc to install the ENTIRE game, we have to use 6 cds, swapping to hell, hoping one disc doesn't accidently get messed up, etc. I seriously hate cds so much. DVDs are the future of gaming and better catch on faster. I own Ut2k4 DVD copy cause there no way in heck I'd installing 5 cds. I also have Metal Gear Solid Substance DVD, I think it's only DVD, and good thing, it's like 6gb or 10gb fully installed, I don't remember. I mean seriously, you just have to be lame if you don't wanna lay down 30 bucks the most for a DVD drive.

NTSC
Never the Same Color twice.

I think America is satureated with $388 Dell and Gateway computers that probably didn't come with DVD drives a few years ago. Though I could be wrong, seeing as I'm only going by what I know of from their tv commercials (tries to cover cow hide chasis).

Good news for this UK'er. Firstly I dont want to mess about with 4-6 cd's for HL2, secondly it will only encourage more games in DVD.

For the few who dont have a DVDRom, you can get them for like £15 from ebuyer, and thats Benq who by no means considered poor quality. I cant think of anything easier to install either.

DVD probably still wont be a dominating software format by the time BluRay/HDDVD are becoming mainstream.

Here in Minnesota, we have the granddaddy of them all. Over 300k square feet, plus 2 Outlets.

You can find sofas and couches.

IMHO:
Couch is anything you can lay on.
Sofa is maybe a small hide-a-bed - or what I like to call a love seat.

with regards to it being dvd only. I dont get what the big deal is really, since virtually ALL pc's capable of running the game will be new enough to have a dvdrom by now anyway.

Can anybody else remember a game that put out this much detail about its release format without even having a release date?

Rick I hear you there. Hell according to steam I have a "full locked copy" of HL2 on my computer as we speak. I guess they mean "full unfinished, release candidate".

I buy music online, I buy movies online, and I buy tons of software online. Hell I bought my last car online. I see no reason not to use Steam. I already preloaded HL2 last night. The moment it's released I will be playing it. No trip to the stores to find the game sold out, no BS.

Those of you who are scared of Steam should seek professional help.

Why the hell is the US only getting DVD on the 'delux' version? Thats a load of BS. I was so pissed when i heard EU got Far Cry on DVD and we had to deal with 5 CD's. Come on people this format has been around for 10+ years now, SUPPORT IT! People say there is no need for DVD drives because there is no software to use it, game companyes say there is no point in releaseing DVD's because no one has drives. SOMEONE TAKE THE STEP! For the people that say they are to expensive, 20-40$ is to expensive? come on.

Also, to those that say DVD roms are useless or even own one and never used it, incase you didn't know, they can also read CDs. Plus, don't people usually have set-ups with two drives, a CD-R and the 2nd drive makes no sense not to be a DVD-rom.

For a while I couldn't choose a DVD player for home, while I made up my mind I watched lots of dvds on my computer from my sofa(couch for the yanks) using TV out on my video card and the sound via my stereo.

I don't know about you guys but I prefer to buy the DVD editions of computer mags, you get more demos, mods, game movies & patches etc than the two 2cd versions.

The game will have to be good to pay out an extra 20 quid for a DVD Rom!

Don't worry chief, it will suck, so you don't have to spend all that money...

I can understand some people not having a DVD-rom if they only planned to have one drive, which would be a CD-R. Though, with a mid-sized tower, like what I have, you kind of plan for two rom drives. One CD-R and a CD or DVD-rom, and since usually a DVD-rom is only $10-$20 more, why not incase you need it.

Also, the price shouldn't be more expensive for the game if it's DVD. Just look at Myst IV, the new game is not just one DVD, but 2 DVDs, plus I hear it comes with a 3rd DVD with Myst III on it. A game that has 3 DVDs in the box for $39.99, imagine how many discs it would have been if CDs.

Put me down as another PC owner who doesn't have a DVD player in his system. Simply haven't had the need to. My CD-ROM and burner works just fine and I would never watch a DVD movie on my computer monitor (21"). DVD movies are for watching on a TV on the comfort of your couch, not an office chair (and you sure as hell can't have friends crowd around your PC to watch a movie).

But if DVD is where media players are headed then I suppose I'll have to pony up and get one eventually.

Also, I seem to be one of the few people who isn't bothered my 6-CD installations and the like. Once you've installed the game, you only need one CD anyway. I can't say I even notice the hassle.

I just checked on pricewatch and you can get a plain old dvd drive (not burner) for $12 +shipping and handling. They should just sell a dvd-only version that comes with a dvd drive for $20 more.

yeah, I bought one of those Kenwood multi-beam CD-ROMs. Seemed like a good idea at the time. It was able to read more without spinning faster.

I remember when I bought that 72x Yamaha CD-ROM drive a few years ago. I bought it cuz it was like the fastest CD reader on earth. Talk about your stupid purchases.
