Man, some of you tin-foil hat people are so touchy when it comes to Steam. Who pissed in your bowl of Cheerios this morning?

All I said was I downloaded the client this weekend and was able to start downloading the HL2 preload in less then five minutes. For that I get called all sorts of names. Sheesh.

Well, whether you buy off Steam or buy a CD/DVD, you still will most likely have to go through Steam for patches or multiplayer.

Can you check your Steam folder and tell me how big it is? Also provide the math you used to figure it only took "5 minutes" to be up and running?

You know some people run Linux. If Steam is an F-16 then that's like solo piloting Voltron 1, that's the one with the 15 vehicles that can transform into 3 larger vehicles or one larger robot, not Voltron 3 which is the the one with the 5 lions. I've seen a picture of Voltron 2 and it's like 3 robots combined or something, but that was on the back of a Japanese imported toy of Voltron 1 back when I was in Jr. High, I've never actualy seen the Voltron 2 cartoon so I couldn't tell you much more then that about it.

You know some people run Linux. If Steam is an F-16 then that's like solo piloting Voltron 1, that's the one with the 15 vehicles that can transform into 3 larger vehicles or one larger robot, not Voltron 3 which is the the one with the 5 lions. May be you should go back and read my whole post. As I stated, all I did was download the steam client over the weekend, installed it and tried it out. And I found that it took me less than 5 minutes to be up and running.

That' makes me an idiot and fanboy?! For what, trying something out and liking it's simplicity and ease of use?! Seems to me that you are the one who is an idiot for not being able to figure out how to use such a simple piece of software

As I said already, why make it more complicated than before? The car vs. F-16 was an example, as you should have noticed with your overwhelming intellect (or not).
Its not that its to complicated to learn, its just much more complicated than it has to be. And you defended it as user friendly. Which its not. YOU should read my post again...

Oh so for you its the same switching off Doom3, after that close Activision-Steam, after that start Valve-Steam, search your server, find one, get kicked out because the brwoser doesnt work properly, get another server, play for 30 mins, close Half-Life, close Steam, start EA-Steam, and so on, compared to just fire up your general game browser choose the game you want to play, refresh the sever list and go play, or simply use the ingame server browser. after playing simply close the game and leave the game browser in the background (which doesnt use nearly as much resources as 10 different Steams) if you plan on playing any game soon, if not simply close it?

With those statements you just confirmed my theory about an IQ of -200... My god... another all-knowing, selfrighteous, self-adoring prick...

No you (insert cruel name here) switch programs as in close down steam and load other pub/software houses version of steam to play their game. Read my full post and maybe you can point some faults in each of the bad points I listed, or maybe give a much greater number of good points, because I sure don't see any.

Steam is not bad at all and very user friendly with low overhead.

Yep, if those "easy user friendly" designs keep up, our cars will be as easy to control as an F-16...
I believe you feel "cool" to be able to control a F-16, but its not neccesary to control a simple thing that complicated.
It wont get into my head how someone can say Steam is easy to use. Maybe if you always typed with your feet anyway and love it when your computer keeps you waiting since you have no life anyway, but as a normal gamer who wants to play a quick game of CS, DMC, TFC, etc... I cant think of anything but completely idiotic or fanboy if I hear phrases like yours.

I hope steam doesn't catch on.
Imagine all the publishers/software houses doing it.
How many demons would be running on your machine all the time?
Sucking bandwidth & CPU time checking for patches and updates.
Or do you try and control it so, "okay lets play HL2, fire up steam run HL2, okay bored now,quit HL2, closed down steam, fire up activisions version of steam to load game ...".

"Okay now I want to play GameX online, whose's the publisher? whats the name of their Steam product?"

All those programs, with internet access and access to your harddisks and registry, sounds like a hackers dream to me.

I don't trust Valve, they can't even keep their own machines safe from hackers. Would you trust EA or Activision to produce a secure steam type program? Microsoft can't even produce a secure webbrowser.

Then there's the issue of Spyware, tell me they won't be able to send a complete list of fav websites and installed programs back to their marketing guys.

Then what about other OS's? I'm happy to play ET, Q3, RtCW, UT2003/4 and now Doom3 on Linux. All of those games are available on Mac OS X too.

I'm happy to get game updates & patches from official websites when I choose or from Mag cover disks(DVD because they have more on them).
As for the games themselves, DVD is the only sensible alternative to 3/4/5/6 CD's

a little ot here, but how DO modemers & isdn'ers play steam? just turn off caching and occasionally have to wait 6 weeks for a mag cover cd?

(not that HL games didnt get HUGE patches anyway, but at least they didnt seem to be very frequent)

Dude, you are way too paranoid. This is just a game we are talking about. I would be suspicious if the U.S. government forced me to do something like that. But seriously dude .... Valve?!

As for the 3 gig footprint .... who cares? I got twin 80 gig S-ATA drives running in RAID-0, with about 115 gigs still to spare. I have not installed HalfLife 1 and it's add ons since I last upgraded my computer - I am waiting for the Source versions to play them all over again

I have stated in the past. I have been aronud for some time with games and technology, I assume you always have the latest and greatest cause that is all your money goes to. Well some grownups can't have that luxury. I have been playing games for many years, consulted on technology for many years, and enjoy the pc gaming industry. BUT! I am also a RAM and HD space policeman. I like things clean and see no reason to keep crap on my HD that I don't use.
