Good and bad about this game :

Good:

1) It looks great, and the battles are awesome to watch, especially when vehicles are fighting infantry. Nice and gooey to see that orc chainsaw slice through your infantry with blood spurting everywhere.

2) Well balanced, although I think the Space Marines' uber vehicle is much more powerful than that of the Chaos Marines and Eldar (nobody can say anything bad about the squiggoth).

3) Very easy to get a quick battle going, and to have fun for 45 minutes or so, which is not so easy with other RTSs (think Rome : Total War, which is far more heavy time investment.)

Bad:

1) It chugs like hell on mid range machines, even with medium detail and no shadows... Apparently anyone with less than 1GB is going to experience chugging in large battles. While I suppose this is understandable considering all that's going on, I wouldn't exactly say that 1GB of memory has become standard yet.

2) The single player campaign is 11 whole missions long. If you take your time, they'll take you about 10 hours to complete. If you are agressive and run through them (which you can, because that's the style this game advocates), you can do so in half that. 5-10 hours of single player is NOT enough, especially considering the fact that they still sold the damn game for 50 bucks. "We didn't have the budget nor the time" is a bullshit excuse when that 49.99 price sticker is looking at me.

3) Not many multiplayer maps, and most of them are very similar. There are perhaps half a dozen maps that are actually fun to play. And, ofcourse, there is no map editor...

Having said that, Relic released a free expansion pack for Impossible Creatures, and the end of the single player campaign all but SCREAMS that there will be a follow up to the story, so I'm hoping that they'll get that expansion out the door right quick.
The tools apparently will be out within several weeks, so at least some good maps should pop up.

There is also a stupid bug in the Skirmish setup, you are always player 1, if you take a map and want to fight 3 AIs on the other side of the map, numbered 4, 5 and 6, you start the game, to find that the game has made the computer AIs numbers 2, 3 and 4, and so two of them start right next to you. I have tried and tried and tried, and this happens every single fucking time. Which means that you're stuck either slugging it out with an AI 10 meters away from your base (you can kill him quick, but what's the point?), or playing 2 player maps, or playing with 2 allies (which makes it far too easy).
I hope that this will get fixed soon.

All in all, I'm enjoying the game, but I would have enjoyed it far more had there been more maps, and a bigger single player campaign. I can't say that I feel robbed, but there is not a whole lot of content here for 49.99.
If you are just wanting to play an RTS, not necessarily a space RTS, I would suggest Rome : Total War over this any day of the week.

Creston

Edit : The devs have said quality over quantity regarding missions.

That'd be great if the missions were of fantastic quality, but quite frankly they aren't. The missions against the Orcs are nice enough, but the ones against the Chaos Marines are just standard bog fare "here's a peon, build a base, and survive while the Bloodthirster comes to rape your ass", four of them in a row. There's nothing remarkable or remotely quality about them.

Also, if your missions depend on spawn cheats in order to make them "difficult", you automatically forfeit ANY entitlement to the word quality.
Dawn of war uses spawn cheats in TWO of their eleven maps.

Edit 2 : The cutscenes are way to heavy. The marines are uptight religious guys. Do it our way or die.

That is completely in keeping with the Warhammer 40K universe. In fact, I thought the Blood Ravens were fairly lenient throughout the campaign with regards to the Imperial Guard and such

single player is very lacking, but to be honest, i can't remember completing the single player component of ANY rts game i've ever had that had a multiplayer component.

the ork and eldar 'methodologies' for their advancement are awesome. they fall in line with the culture in the TT game. orks in particular rock 'orks orks orks orks'

I find the comparison to Warcraft surprising, because I hated WC3, but love Dawn of War.

Also, it's the 1.0 version of the game would not properly connect to non-US versions anyway. You would get sync errors. The patch just makes it so you can't even try. It also makes it so that the game's automatch feature doesn't try to hook US and non US players together - which is a good thing if they wouldn't be able to play anyway.

That's how I feel anyway.. it's warcraft with with far cooler visuals and much more fun tactics.

I agree the SP is lacklustre, but I don't much care, because I could play skirmish and multi til the cows come home.

I believe relic has stated there will be much "community support", so I'd expect a map editor at some stage.

There are various victory conditions available.. about 8 different ones from memory, which can be mixed and matched.

Is it only that single play mode where you have to capture lots of capture points which are scattered over the whole map?

The devs have said quality over quantity regarding missions.

It is very clear that most of the development time went into balancing the races.
...And I think it has paid off.

I have just finished the campaign on hard. Last few levels tested my patience (in a good way ), and have since dived straight into skirmish and multiplayer.

Haven't had this much fun in skirmish since TA! Don't get me wrong, Star/Warcraft had the best single player campaigns/story imo (for an RTS). But their multi and skirmish seemed to be about flavour of the month troops and lots of em. Got old quick for me.

I was impressed with the beta. The demo got me hyped. I have not been let down by the release. And the mod community (and editing tools) have me hyped for the coming races and player made campaigns

They probably only had one single player campaign due to budget contraints.

Expect campaign expansions.

I kinda liked that.
There are no good guys. the space marine side are crazy human purity fanatics, but they are packed full of implants and even use their corpses to control robots.

They probably only had one single player campaign due to budget contraints. like they could have one decent one with good voice acting, or 4 crapy campaigns and have the programers doing the voice work. and we know how that would turn out. Not all companies have hte budget of blizzard.

arhammer 40,000; Dawn of War by Relic Entertainment - English retail v1.01 patch

This patch merely prevents the English edition from playing the non-English editions by updating the version number to 1.01.

====

I normally jump on patches as soon as they come out, but I guess I'll pass on this one unless there's a strong reason why I should want to prevent my edition from playing the non-English versions.

I thought they dropped the ball with single player. The only race is the space marines. I was looking forward to an epic story like starcraft or warcraft with cutscenes and campaigns for all of the races.'

The voice of the chaos guys and eldar coulda been different. I got some mouse freezing funkiness. That was with big maps and an older computer.

The cutscenes are way to heavy. The marines are uptight religious guys. Do it our way or die. Sorta like republicans.

The units and animations are very cool. Music is pretty good overall. They really could have made a super blockbuster with it if they would have changed a few things and made single player campaigns for all races. It would be cool to see another developer get as popular as Blizzard did with starcraft and warcraft.

I bought both DoW and Rome:TW ... I expected Rome to get most of my attention but the truth is I have barely touched Rome at all DoW is so good! I like the way the game flows better then WC3.

Warhammer is excellent, IMHO and you're right about trying to balance all the new games out. Kohan II is worth the buy also.

Haven't had much time to play it yet, but I keep describing it as what you'd expect Starcraft 2 to play like. Very fun, very polished. Can't wait to try multiplayer!

My only problem is how to balance this game with Kohan II... Good problem i guess

But I'm pretty sad that with all four very unique, attractive, and fun races, only one has a singleplayer campaign.

i agree, campaign is short- demands an expansion. get on it relic.
also needs an editor but will GWI allow it?

The Eldar are a real different style of play, much needed when it comes to the stale RTS genre.

But I'm pretty sad that with all four very unique, attractive, and fun races, only one has a singleplayer campaign.

Is this game as good as it looks and sounds? I played the beta (demo) and got side tracked by another game at the time... but I had a blast while I was playing it. The problem is there are just too many good games out. It baffles me when I see year after year complaints about it being a slow year for good PC games. Hell, I don't have enough time to play all the games I buy let alone all the game I would like to play...

EDIT: Damned typos
