DNF Gets Physical

Meqon announces that they are providing the physics engine for Duke Nukem Forever:
3D Realms selects Meqon as physics provider for Duke Nukem Forever

Norrköping, Sweden – 27th of September, Meqon, an up and comer in the physics middleware industry, announced they have been selected by 3D Realms as the physics engine provider for their long awaited game Duke Nukem Forever.

Meqon has been focusing on creating the most easy to use and flexible physics engine in existence. George Broussard, CEO of 3D Realms backs them up - “We evaluated several physics SDK's and Meqon was really fast, had the cleanest interface and integrated into our game very quickly."

The physics engine does not only handle basic rigid body simulation, but extends into character and vehicle enhanced physics as well. Mr Broussard comments, “With its advanced feature set, we feel confident that Meqon's next generation physics engine can help us create the next generation of action games.”

...when and if DNF is released, it will have about 10 hours of gameplay. I would hope that a game that has been in development since the invention of the abacus (that was the original target platform) would have somewhere around 6-to-8 years of gameplay, and come on about 75 CDs.

If there is any justice, it will also be free - we've already paid for it in all these vaporware announcements we've been subjected to.

Obviously, they've screwed up... probably screwed up a few times. Instead of figureing "oh well, it's good enough" and releasing it, they decided to eat the developing costs and start over from scratch. Yeah, I'd prefer that they didn't screw up at all, and give us a great game in a timely manner. If that's not possible, I'd much rather wait and have a great game "when it's done".

The thing is, you can only do this so many times. This is why you have a design sheet, and a vision for what your game should and shouldn't do.

Now, is it okay to start over if the final product doesn't live up to expectations? Sure it is. According to popular legend, Valve started over completely on Half Life, and then in one year made what was at the time the finest shooter ever released. (You'll note I'm a bit skeptical about the started over completely thing)

However, there is only so many times you can do this before you just get more and more behind the times. Broussard and his gang are constantly reacting to other games being released. Shit, that looks cool, we need that. Damn, they did that? We have to incorporate that too.

And before you know it, all you're doing is trying to keep tread with current day developments, and never releasing your game. There comes a point when it's done, and it's enough, and you just need to release it. Every writer knows this. Every director knows this. Even almost every game studio knows this. The only one who doesn't know this, is George Broussard.

Gear, writing stupidly is not a style, it's just stupid. At least put some paragraphs in your posts so it becomes easier to read. Otherwise you might as well not bother, because I doubt many people struggle to try to read through 27 inches of solid side to side ramblings. Just a thought.

Edit : At this point people are going to expect something that actually changes their life and civilization in some meaningful way, like Christianity or Islam or Buddhism did.

Please, don't give old George any ideas...

>>Why would anyone NOT want a game that someone put that much time, money and effort into?<<

You mean like with "Daikatana"?

Actually this announcement probably means two things: First, the game could be very nearly done and they just thought the physics engine wasn't up to the quality of the rest of the game, so they have made this change; and Two, 3DR has probably bought a chunk of Meqon, and are getting the thing for free, and want to hype it.

The main thing with a game that has been in development since right after the Earth cooled is that no matter what they do it will never live up to the hype and expectations. Even if DNF is released sometime after we all evolve into a higher life form, and is the best game ever made, and sells more copies than any other game ever has, it will be a flop. At this point people are going to expect something that actually changes their life and civilization in some meaningful way, like Christianity or Islam or Buddhism did.

If Broussard and his bunch are really smart, they stopped working on this years ago and just keep mentioning it whenever they need some media exposure. They should just keep making other stuff and use DNF as a running press release gag. Maybe they are. But there's no way DNF will ever be what we expect at this point - it would have to be a totally new form of entertainment to live up to the legend.

some of you idiots might think that a 10 year dev cycle is commendable when the industry average is 2-3, but i can assure you that you are in a very small, very silly minority

try taking that philosophy into the business world and see what happens

captain, if they were living hand-to-mouth the way that 95% of devs do then it'd be something to comment on but the reality is, the guys at 3DR have made a truckload of cash off their past IP's. Take-2 is just an errand boy for them, someone to distribute the game to retail and pass along some ad-space in PC gamer etc. (of course I exaggerate but you get the idea). Take 2 will sit still and like it simply because they'll make out like bandits eventually. If they want to frop the game theres many publishers who are more than willing to take their place. It may be a shitty way to do business in your eyes but to be homest, after seeing devs get screwed over so many times by big publishing houses its pretty neat to see one of the larger companies have to play "bitch" for once. They (3DR) dont need to answer to anyone. Hell, they could scrap Duke and go retire on their current cash reserves.

"this game has been in development for almost 10 years"
That would imply it was started in sometime in 1995.

"DNF was announced before the kids, who are in High-School now, were born."
That would imply it was announced approximately 15 years ago, or 1990. 3DRealms didn't even exist in name until 1994. The original Duke Nukem came out in 1991. I don't see how a sequel could've been announced for a game that was still a year from release at the time you say it happened.

The earliest I can find a reference to Duke Nukem Forever is 1997 when it was announced as a new side-scroller. When that was axed 3DR repurposed the name for the current Duke non-entity. That's seven years after you say it was originally announced.

1990 was the freakin' dark-ages for PC gaming. Diamond wouldn't release the Monster3D for close to six years, games came on 3.5" floppies, ran under DOS, and were still using VGA graphics. I think the very first Commander Keen was released that year (or late '89..hard to remember). The fact of the matter is, though, that you are exagerating things pretty badly.

Accept the fact that you CANNOT recoup the investment of resources into DNF and MAKE THE DAMN GAME! FINISH IT AND RELEASE IT!

Oh yeah, absolutely. Just shove the damn thing out the door. That's what everyone told Ion Storm to do with Daikatana, and that wound up working out okay for Romero.

Uh, no. Yeah, I would have much preferred that 3DR just remake DN3D with the same engine and a couple of new monsters and weapons, and release to make tons more money. Instead, they decided to make a really evolutionary game. There's more then enough mediocre crap out there to keep me occupied while I'm waiting.

Will DNF be great? In all honesty, probably not. If nothing else, it's gotta be difficult for a development team to stay focused and motivated and eager through all these setbacks. But at least 3DR seems to be trying to make a great game. They're not churning out a bunch of cookie-cutter titles to take advantage of the Duke franchise. They're not burning through millions of dollars of advance money while they spend more on office furniture then on employee salaries. They seem to have pretty much stopped hyping the game. I'm willing to wait for DNF to come out, and I really hope it's a great game.

The only thing I'm pissed about is that I reserved DUKENUKEMFIVEEVER.COM way back in '98. Figured I'd make millions off of it. I'm still waiting.

Well I just love this physics demo "game", I guess that's the closest we'll get to DNF for the time being.

As far as the game being delayed, so what? It's not like we had the game and they took it back...

"What I don't have, I don't care about" is my philosophy when it comes to games, you'll never know what the developers decide to do, so it's better just to close your eyes and wait.
