DNF Gets Physical

Meqon announces that they are providing the physics engine for Duke Nukem Forever:
3D Realms selects Meqon as physics provider for Duke Nukem Forever

Norrköping, Sweden – 27th of September, Meqon, an up and comer in the physics middleware industry, announced they have been selected by 3D Realms as the physics engine provider for their long awaited game Duke Nukem Forever.

Meqon has been focusing on creating the most easy to use and flexible physics engine in existence. George Broussard, CEO of 3D Realms backs them up - “We evaluated several physics SDK's and Meqon was really fast, had the cleanest interface and integrated into our game very quickly."

The physics engine does not only handle basic rigid body simulation, but extends into character and vehicle enhanced physics as well. Mr Broussard comments, “With its advanced feature set, we feel confident that Meqon's next generation physics engine can help us create the next generation of action games.”

The fact that they seem to be nonchalant and oblivious to the whole "DUKE NUKEM the game had been in developement FOREVER" amuses me, and there should be more developers like that willing to suck all the money and energy and time out of companies, go 3D Realms!

Indeed, Birdman's Lair was a website devoted to adding SpaceOrb support for all sorts of games. Kinda cool, actually.

And yeah, you're right about GreenMarine - he's kinda cool too. Actually, it was his .plan file that convinced me to buy Planescape:Torment, for which I will be forever grateful.

Yeah, I am one of the "older guys" too, and remember everything you mentioned, but you have to realize that now you are getting OLD. Its not really all that "cool" to remember back when PONG was popular and so were punch-cards.

The new "kids" will say "get with the times grandpa".

This game/project is so old that . . .

... the default look up and down buttons were not on a mouse, but the PAGEUP & PAGEDOWN keys on the keyboard.

... the strippers looked like animatronic hippos with rubber bras, with 2 colors and 64 vertices to make up the whole model.

... the young guys wouldn't remember the PowerVR(laugh) chipset.

... the young guys wouldn't understand setting up more extended memory in DOS through crappy edit and config.cfg

... the young guys don't understand how people didn't play games with mice & gamepads on FPS back in the day.

... the young guys don't remember the Razer Boomslang.

... the only way to recover is to turn it into full manga, with mechs, a storyline, cool laser effects, and um, YEA! (oh wait, wasn't that shogo?, oh yea, that already came out . . .) (oh yea, and young guys won't knwo what Shogo was either)

And I bet GreenMarine is under some sort of NDA not to talk...

Hey, that never stopped him before!

I never remember Brandon writing things that would be considered out of bounds.

You have a better chance getting him to talk by discussing one of his hobbies.

Besides, I think he's been with SOE for a while now, I'm sure whatever he would know is well out of date as 3DR has made sooo many enhancements since he left.

I am rooting for this game to get released before HL2 cause I wanna see the look Gabe's face after he reads that headline.

No one wants to say, "We released our game right after Duke Nukem Forever." (Such an appropriate title too!)

"They could have selected this thing awhile ago, and just happen to announce today that they are using it for the final product. Just a thought."

I read about them using Meqon a couple of months ago; they might even have had a deal to only license it if the game shipped with it (which after 19 years of DNF development changes would be a smart idea for 3DR).

Gear, the 3DR forums have a pieced together a time frame of '06/07, based on GB's comments, which seems to match your guess. A late '07 release gives 3DR 3 years to finish the game.

Wow, that was a riot! Thanks! I knew George talked out his ass, but MAN - has he been BUSY TALKING OUT HIS ASS.

That should be required reading before posting in any DNF thread...

"after we all evolve into a higher life form"

Fantastic. Will we?

"in development since right after the Earth cooled"

I think I love you.

"expect something that actually changes their life and civilization in some meaningful way, like Christianity or Islam or Buddhism did."

A new religion. Something like scientology. I love it. Must have it. Buy it, eat it. Die from it.

"But there's no way DNF will ever be what we expect at this point - it would have to be a totally new form of entertainment to live up to the legend."

Like Daikatana? It was a good game. After patches, that is. But I don't understand this obsession with daikatana in DNF discussions.

Romero released it to quickly. 3DR certainly won't release DNF before WID. So watch out. It's a mutation! Or whatever you want to belive. That's it.

The rovers Spirit and Opportunity were proposed, authorized, announced, designed, launched and successfully landed upon Mars within the timeframe of Duke Nukem Forever's development.

Uh-oh, my bad. Apparently he's now at SOE, working on Star Wars: Galaxies. Wonder when that happened?

meh, he was always a big RPG geek. I hope he takes time to come post once in awhile. Additionally, I miss his .plan files, he had some good critiques on various games.
