I see a lot of peaople try to compare Doom 3 to games like UT2k4, FarCry, HL2 etc but I rarely read it being compared to the game that is most similar, Painkiller.

in formal poll: Graphics aside, which was the better game in your opimiom, D3 or PK?

Bonus question: Which game had the better "Hell" level?

Farcry was awesome from beginning to end.

Frustrating AI? Trial and error? What are you on?

The AI was great, the physics were great, the levels were AWESOME! The weapons were way cool. Vehicles were great. The story was so-so, I admit.

Those jump-monsters in Farcry were a helluva lot scarier than anything in D3. You knew that if they got close, you were dead. Couple that with savepoints and you shit yourself when they come for you hehe

I dunno. Doom3 just didn't do it for me. What is the point of having allegedly good graphics if no one can see it because there is no light?? Why were there only like 2 monsters? Why did they always spawn behind you when you picked up armor and stuff? Why were the levels 10 square feet big? And I can't stand factory-like level design. I hate turning on auxiliary power for the main systems power supply relay to get access to the backup generators which are located behind the door you get the access code to from the table behind the door that the steam valve opens access to. Couple the boring level design with the 2 monster type and no light, and you have a boringass game.

Farcry mostly consisted of trial and error and frustrating AI, I hardly see that as being better gameplay. Doom 3 was consistently fun and never took you out of the game with awkward and confusing moments. That, and the story was interesting enough all the way through. Far Cry's story was a complete joke.
I'm still baffeled at why people hail it game as the best shooter since Half-Life. In my opinion Far Cry ranks up (or down) there was red faction in the shooter genre...And at least that game attempted to do something innovative, and had a half decent premise.

EDIT: Actually, come to think of it, wasn't the last half of Far Cry the same as Red Faction's ending revelations? Some crazy doctor making these nasty monsters using human beings as test subjects? Except replace a tropical island with Mars?

I agree 100% with Gandhi, the graphics were great, the sounds were very good (although, the Reznor sound pack improved them) but because of the lack of reply I would give it low marks.
All and all, no regrets.
Hell looked cool, and the sarge was a good fight too.

Hey, I'll trade with someone my Doom 3 copy which is in brand new condition, for their Far Cry copy. Just a matter of gameplay and to me, Doom 3 blows hardcore.

9/10 easily. I don't need some fucking annoying story, I just want the game to be fun, and it is, though drags a bit in the middle.

Hey, if you were to give the game a score, what would it be?

I think I would give it about 50% - meciocre at best. How those review sites could give it such a good score is beyond me. I swear, if this game was released by anyone but id it would get horrible, horrible reviews.

Anyone who has an IPX --> IP converter so we can play it on the net?

On Win2000+ you're screwed unless people get organized and run a VPN (though I've tried and failed in the past)

Other than that, there's a wonderful program called Kahn: http://www.kahncentral.net/

How anyone could bitch about Halo's gameplay after playing Doom 3 is beyond me.

Agreed, at least Halo had some pretty good AI to offset the repetitive map design. Actually Halo has some of the best singleplayer AI I've seen in a FPS. Except for those retarded zombie things

The lack of coop multiplayer alone really brings the replay value down to negligible levels.

Is the demo from an early part of the game? I must admit I found the first few maps a bit of a trawl once I'd gotten used to the gfx and the scares. But, from the point the first Hellknights appeared (Delta 4?) the game picked up. Had I stopped before then I'd be left thinking the game was very dull. But, personally I really enjoyed it from there onwards. That's maybe the last 3rd of the game??
Also, the tight corridor gameplay began to open up more in the last few maps.
That said I don't think it has the replay value of the original Doom. I can't see myself trying to finish this one with just fists.

It's kind of fun, but almost as repeditive as Halo.

almost??!! ALMOST???

it surpases Halo's "repetition" by an infinite factor. Halo had a section that could be considered repetitive but it was more than tolerable. Most of Doom 3 is the same 3 demons spawning everytime you enter a room for about 80% of the game.

How anyone could bitch about Halo's gameplay after playing Doom 3 is beyond me.
