The Matrix Online Delayed

The Matrix Online Website has news of a delay to Monolith's upcoming MMORPG based on the movie franchise. The update puts the game's availability at January 18, 2005, cleanly missing the holiday sales season the previous November release date had targeted. The move is explained as a way to allow for a simultaneous North American and European launch. The post also says pre-orders begin next week, allowing entrance into the closed beta testing beginning November 18, as well as a three day head-start on the game's official release. Meanwhile, GameSpot has a Q&A with WSIE's Jason Hall about the announcement: "I can assure you that it’s going to ship on January 18. From a technical standpoint, if we really wanted to not include other countries, we could have shipped it a little bit earlier. This is why we’re very confident in our ship date."

I take it Clamps has never played the Terminator 3 game that was released by Atari and bitch-slapped in the press because the game was absolutely pure shit. It's the same crap over and over and over - Publisher spends big $$$ securing the rights to some Hollywood franchise, then has virtually no money nor time left to make even a halfway decent game based on it. Instead they push the abortion out the door in the hopes that it sells enough based on name recognition alone to recoup their money.

I agree with Clamps on one thing, though. I wouldn't want to work in the gaming industry either (unless I get to pick which babes will represent my game at E3). It would not be fun to play 'Game Developer Musical Chairs' each time your studio gets bought out or shut down...

Best.
Thread.
Ever.

Odds are Clamps sits in his basement coding Pac-Man clones, yet thinks he's a developer.

And of course we judge without playing. In order to play we will need to pay $50 + one month of the fee. They have to entice me to play before they get my money.

We also judge everything without seeing it. We judge by the facts and the concept. If someone tells me they're making a game based on something terrible I'll deem it terrible. From time to time I'll eat my words, as in Freddy Pharkus: Frontier Pharmacist, but you can usually tell crap a mile away.

Please, thats exactly what (s)he deserved...There was no attempt at doing myself or anyone for that matter, a favour. If you dont like my post, disregard it.

This game is crap and the Matrix has been dead since the first sequel. The original post was practically doused in gasoline...were responders supposed to politely mention how the opinion presented just might be a little pathetic?

Time for this thread to die off kindof like how this game is going to die off. Please just let the Matrix series go peacefully retaining at least some form of dignity, mainly gained through the first film. Ah fuck it!

This game is going to fail miserably! Anyone devoted enough to the Matrix to buy this piece of shit shouldn't be suprised when, after they've already shelled out 50 bucks and a few monthly payments, support is completely dropped. Play at your own risk.

If this was said to me in person, I would probably definitely slap you then laugh hysterically.

There are a million mofo's out there who would LOVE to have your job and would graciously accept the criticsim that the people who make your checks cashable put forth, you ungrateful piece of shit.

Do you have any idea the processes involved with trying to entertain self-agrandising amature critics

When I read threads like this one, I wonder why we bother. It's certainly not the money. And this shows that it's sure as hell not the players.
Maybe we only do it for other designers these days.

Gotta agree with @madeus here...the simultanious release sounds very much like a 'lets cash in on every fanboy out there asap before the bad word hits the net' tactic.

I still say the gfx look cool though, as do the factions. Gameplay however...why is it that I can find very little on that? Makes you wonder...

As far as which world is real, again, you?re right. It's obvious that in the real world, games hold the unique position of being things that cost millions of dollars and tens of thousands of hours to make, yet don't deserve the simple "Wait and see" respect that movies or songs get. Maybe in a few more years when the industry (and it's audience) comes of age.

but, er, people do do that to movies & music. They look at the trailer for a film, think 'that looks shit', and don't watch it. Or they don't buy an album because the single is crap (or the singer is a rent-a-pop-star style twat). Games, IMO, get more pre-release previewing than those, too, and people judge upon that.

People shouldn't have to consider anything bar their own situation when judging a product, complete or not. It's the consumers right. Same as you can look at, for example, the back of a book and decide you don't want it - yeah, it's often harsh and unfair, but it's the way the world works.

Besides which, if you do your job right, it's not as if you don't get praise in the long run, and the people you're complaining about are obviously not customers, so why do you even care? That's what i don't get.... sure, if someone criticises my work, I'll defend it, but at the same time i won't question their right to make that criticism (and if I feel its unfair, i'll just politely ignore it).

I simply don't believe the given reason for delay. As another user put it, it does sound very 'Gabe Newell'.

Why would any one miss the xmas holiday period in North America just to have a simultaneous release in Europe? That just makes no commercial sense to me. It's not as if they are going to gain ill will from releasing a few weeks later in Europe (we are used to it).

It just sounds like they are not ready - if they were that serious about a simultaneous release and it was important for their strategy they would have planned it from the start in any case. Failing to be able to plan for something as obvious as this would just make me worry about their ability to plan other aspects of the project.

I have no objection to paying for MMOG's and have had 4-5 on the go at once in the past - I don't think developers should be too bothered by those who have a problem paying to play, there is no point in catering to those who don't have the cash to pay up - but all in all I'll be very surprised if this title turns out not to be a turkey.

If there was a demo I would try it. I'm still of the opinion that no matter what a game looks like it's worth trying once. I would have missed some great games by taking the elitist approach and damning a game before I'd ever even tried it.

I gotta say I completely disagree with you about the movies aspect of your agrument. My decision to see a movie is generally made within the first few seconds of a trailer. I ask myself does this movie seem good or not simply from watching a 2 minute trailer. While there are some under the radar movies that turn out to be great those are few and far between. Most movies I see are the ones I decided looked good based on the relatively little content I saw through the trailer.

I don't give a crap about the delay. I was going to buy it in November and now I'm going to buy it in January. I hope the extra couple of months just gives them more time to make this game better!

Have any of you people who diss this (or any other) game without playing it actually designed and built a game? Do you have any idea the processes involved with trying to entertain self-agrandising amature critics?

If you wanted to deal with sheep then you should have been a farmer.

Do you have any idea how many games I own? Do you have any idea how many I've played, stretching back to the days of the Apple II and Atari 2600, on up to today? After you've been burned by the sugar-coated marketing spin a couple times, you get to be pretty good at playing 'Spot The Bullshit' after a while.

So now I have to code a game in C++ and Direct X to have an opinion (on the overall theme, graphics, gameplay, etc.)? Does it look like we're discussing LOD algorithms, normal mapping, or per-pixel hit detection methods here? That must have been one hell of a typo if you were trying to get to Gamasutra and ended up at Blue's News.

I don't give a shit how it works, that's why we're paying you $50 and $X a month to make the pretty pixels dance. If we all could make our own games, you wouldn't have a job, would you?

When I read threads like this one, I wonder why we bother. It's certainly not the money. And this shows that it's sure as hell not the players.

You're in the business of your own accord. Noone has a gun to your head, forcing you to make games. And noone has a gun to your head forcing you to read forums like these, either.

The Matrix Online Ass-Kissing Fanboys are down the hall and to the left. You can't miss 'em. Just listen for the moans and the lip-smacking sounds.

/harsh, but I'm sick of the same old bullshit arguments
//and if you think this is bad, this is nothing, ever see Creston rant?

Hmm, not sure I agree with you on movie respect. There are tons of films that people insult without having seen it. House of the Dead, anyone? The thing is, you can usually tell when a movie is going to be crap. I expected HotD to be crap, and when I saw it, my expectations were fulfilled. The same applies to any form of entertainment media. Music is far from exempt. If Carrot Top decided to release an album, do you think anyone would hesitate to bash it before hearing it?

Who cares about this game? It's shit!

OH, and I don't have to play any game before I run it down. I don't have to be fair, or nice. It's not too hard to see when a game is shit and when it isn't, and being the paying customer that I am, I'll call any shitty product what it is....
