Yeah, I'm betting nothing is going to "top" Doom3's monster closets, 1994-era ammo traps, and the ever so immersive flashlight/weapon schism. Plus things like having to exit the game to find a code off the internet.. Nothing will ever come close to the kind of immersion Doom3 has..
I was just going to say something similar. Doom3 had a shit-ton of stunningly immersive sound work done on it.
Sound-wise, it was quite an amazing experience.
Sadly, it had an even bigger shit-ton of stupid, illogical and
annoying immersion-breaking gameplay contrivances such as the ones you mention (and there are plenty more, to be sure).
It's a damn shame id clung so stubbornly to their 'old-skool' ideas, because there were quite a few instances in the game where they really
could have been innovative/creative, but just didn't. Their little 'menu system' stands out as something truly unique, and even
that was completely under-utilized! D3 was hugely over-rated, IMO.
Actually, WTF am I wasting words on that thing for?
HL2 thread -- HL2 is going to be incredible!!
(
Please put the welding gun in it ((even if it's just a c_var you can toggle)) You could make a game that was
just the welding gun, a pile of barrels and a puddle, and it would be the greatest game evar

I'm not even angry. I'm being so sincere right now, even though you broke my heart and killed me.
