Out of the Blue

Turns out I was the one that broke my net connection. Without giving the matter enough thought, I plugged in a modular phone cord without a splitter or a DSL filter, and this turned out to be the cause of my connectivity woes. Luckily I finally made the connection, and things returned to normal immediately.

Speaking of returns to normalcy, I believe we finally got the Tickle ad campaign removed (after a couple of failed attempts) after they slipped a decidedly non-work-safe image (bewbs) into one of their personals. Sorry about that.

Hey, I forgot to ask, did anyone get Fable or Sims 2 yet? I'm definitely seeing some mixed reaction about Fable in the usenet feeds.

Also, has anyone played all the NWN expansions? I was considering picking up the NWN Platinum edition. Think it's worth it?

In the October issue of PC Lamer they include the complete version of Baldur's Gate for free. Been a long time since I played that, I may just have to pick that up.

Is Half Life 2 out yet?

To clarify, you can download portions of the game via Steam in encrypted files and look at them knowing that parts of the game are ON YOUR HARD DRIVE, but you cannot play it.

That sounds like fun...doesn't it?

By the way, I know some people on these boards are into online RPGs. Is anyone here currently playing Kingdom of Loathing http://www.kingdomofloathing.com ? For those that haven't seen it before it's a totally free, web-based RPG... no fancy graphics but with a definte humour all its own.

Could have sworn I've seen that before... Bluesnews search says:

What's really nice is that it will all be available for searching and data mining. For example, you are be able to do BLAST searches on unknown sequences.

Enter your own sequence here for fun and profit: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/genome/seq/HsBlast.html

I don't know about the rest of you, but the whole human genome project is very exciting to me. When you think of it, it's just programming instructions for the human body. Very complex and complicated instructions, but nonetheless... yes, there will be opportunity for abuse and major screw-ups, but in the end, I believe the genome mapping to be incredibly positive. It could very well lead (relatively soon) to the elimination of disease, for one thing. Or the extinction of the race from tampering, but I'm being positive here...

However...

"Volumes of genetic material lie in between the genes, which for a long time were dismissed as "junk" by researchers.

But on closer inspection, it seems this judgement was premature. The fact that sequences of junk were conserved for hundreds of generations suggests they have a function worth holding on to."

Hmmm, you think maybe?

Exciting times ahead.

A 'normal' Verizon tech can't do this or doesn't normally carry the equipment on their truck.

Sounds like another example of a company doing something the hard way and frustrating customers at the same time.

There's supposedly a way to install DSL without them, but Verizon refused to do that for me.

Essentially, they put a device in your house (or attic) where the line comes in.

We have one of these at work. It is merely an in-line filter for the entire line. Instead of filtering each location it filters the entire line.

A 'normal' Verizon tech can't do this or doesn't normally carry the equipment on their truck.

So do it yourself. I did. I have precisely one filter in my entire house.

And it's dirt simple to do, at least if you have any wiring experience at all.

Take the phone line coming from the demark and split it (either using a splitter or a block). One end you run to your DSL modem. The other end you put a filter on and connect the line that used to feed all your phones back in to it.

In my case I use a block (77 block I think; I don't know the terminology honestly) so my line comes in from the demark, I stripped the ends and punched it down into the block. Punched down another line to that and ran it to my DSL modem. Took a filter, cut off the plug end, stripped those wires, and punched it down. Punched down another line into another part of the block and plugged it into the filter. All my regular telephone lines are punched down downstream from there.

BTW, filters can go bad. I had one go bad and my DSL modem stopped working. Just grabbed another, stripped it, and replaced the filter and everything was hunky dory again.

And this is a whole hell of a lot easier than making sure you have a freaking filter on every phone. At least if you have access to the phone line nearish where it comes into your house, and aren't afraid to learn some things in fixing it.

I'm not complaining that you have ads because I fully understand, but those ads are pathetic. Carbon copied faked personals constructed from pictures that I'm sure weren't authorized. So sad if someone actually buys into that crap. Oh, and girls using online personals probably don't look like the girls in those pictures. End rant.

That's the one thing I hate about DSL, those stupid filters.

There's supposedly a way to install DSL without them, but Verizon refused to do that for me.

Essentially, they put a device in your house (or attic) where the line comes in. The device is essentially a special kind of splitter that seperates the phone and the digital-data-line to 2 different wires. You then run the digital line to the room you want your modem to be, and thus no splitters anywhere, and the phone-signal line just connects to your existing phone line.

But, like I said, Verizon wouldn't do that for me (even though they sent 3 technicians to our house to install it).

Unfortunately, I don't know what it's called. I want to say "POTS Splitter," but I don't think that's it. It was so long ago.

A few years ago it looked like we were going to redesign and rebuild a machine that makes those coffee pods for a Portland based coffee company but it never happened. Pretty cool machine - well designed for making the pods but poorly designed from a maintenance standpoint.
