Out of the Blue

Turns out I was the one that broke my net connection. Without giving the matter enough thought, I plugged in a modular phone cord without a splitter or a DSL filter, and this turned out to be the cause of my connectivity woes. Luckily I finally made the connection, and things returned to normal immediately.

Speaking of returns to normalcy, I believe we finally got the Tickle ad campaign removed (after a couple of failed attempts) after they slipped a decidedly non-work-safe image (bewbs) into one of their personals. Sorry about that.

Sims 2 = SATAN

Back in college, we had a pretty cool prof for my management class. Anyway, of the 2 papers we had to write, we had to pick write something on "The worst product to be successfully marketed."

I wrote mine on "The Sims." I pretty much stated it shows the downfall of society. It's kind of hard to not scratch your head when people will play a video game where the point is to "have a life," when they could be having one themselves.

"Johnny, feed the dog."
"Wait mom, I have to feed my Hamster first."
"We don't have a hamster, feed Rex"
"In the SIMS Mom, GOD! Do you want Sammy to starve?"

Anyway, he got a kick out of it and gave me an A. It was 7 pages of theory backed up with some research and statistics.

Yeah, so am I. I've been hearing a lot of good things about it. A friend of mine may get the Xbox version for himself, and if so, I'll be able to see if I want to do the same or get for my PC.

Ray, don't bother with the original NWN campaign, it sucks as hard as a catholic schoolgirl on prom night (*ahem*).

Just go straight for HOTU - it's much better.

Meh, it's been confirmed that a RC was sent to Vivendi yesterday. Still, that doesn't mean much. I'm waiting for it to go gold before I make a mess of my underpants.

Off to play some more Frag.Ops, even if their 'tactical' gameplay consists of the time-tested method of every n00b: Spray-n-Pray.

I am still playing through Neverwinter Nights in little bits. Baby j33bus is crying over how slow, rough, and dumb the game is. It is like a bad Diablo game stuck in tile-set tech demo.

That's kinda how I felt about it.

Anyone know if there are any plans for another Diablo?

It was in a background picture, not from the main person in the picture. The tickle people just do a quick review of the picture, heaven knows how many they review each day, and this one obviously got past.

Enjoying both parts of the picture :D,

I doubt it will happen unless all the planets align...but I keep on hoping it goes "gold" before the fifth. Even if I have to wait until November first for the "official" retail day to play it, I keep on hoping that I can pre-load all the content while I still have broadband...

Sims 2 = SATAN

Fable = I was thinking about it, but I would definitely prefer the potential PC version. I managed to just about get myself ready to buy the Xbox version anyway....when I realized that I had already packed up my Xbox. Seeing as how it will be about three weeks before I have that unpacked, I will hold off for now and decide what I want to do then. To be honest, the first reviews have tempered my bloodlust for it; it seems like a decent hack n' slash RPG, but still a hack n' slash RPG...

The game that I will definitely buy, though equally delayed due to packing, will be Sly 2. I loved the original and I cannot wait to play the sequel.

I am still playing through Neverwinter Nights in little bits. Baby j33bus is crying over how slow, rough, and dumb the game is. It is like a bad Diablo game stuck in tile-set tech demo. If I wanted to play a "Lone warrior" action RPG, I would much rather be playing World of Warcraft. I am so %!@#$%#$% tired of babysitting the hired help; it is kind of sad how poorly even pathfinding works considering I have both expansions and am on whatever number patch. I know that people say the expansions really liven things up a bit, but the original game (I want to play through them in order) is a real pain in the ass...
Meanwhile, I am still waiting to be screwed by Blizzard
Thinking I may finally see Collateral tonight,

Fucking hell, I hope so. Not only do I want to get my mitts on it ASAP, but a November release means holding up Vampire Bloodlines beyond Halloween which is silly seeing as it's done and all. If we can get HL2 out for the first week of October or so, then we can get Bloodlines for Halloween! Sweet!

Cancer-schmancer - I want that 10-foot long schlong! Someday we'll all have a full head of thick luxuriant hair, huge penises for men and giant breasts for women, have big bulging muscles and zero-percent body fat, a permanent tan (but everyone will be "white"), and abundant self-esteem because of our shallow physical perfection.

Of course, at the same time we will be hopelessly sociologically and psychologically damaged, completely uneducated, and be eaten alive by cancer and horrible neurological diseases. Because there's no money in dealing with any of that stuff. And it's tough to put together a sexy marketing campaign for a cure for cancer.

Given the choice of looking good and having great, long duration empty sex, or living longer, most people would say "screw living longer - I want to keep a hardon for six-to-eight hours".

But the MAIN reason the genome will be developed and exploited is BRAINLESS MUTANT SOLDIERS WITH NO SELF-AWARENESS. Politicians will like the idea of having a massive military force to wield for their own corrupt ends, without ever having to resort to a draft (which might hurt re-election chances). BRAINLESS MUTANT SOLDIERS WITH NO SELF-AWARENESS are on the way!

Splitting it once in the beginning (as someone else already mentioned) is a much nicer way to handle it. If I wasn't bogged down with 3 other home improvement projects, I'd go into the attic and do it myself. I guess I'll worry about it next year.

I'm the someone you keep referring to. If you have easy access (as it appears you do) and you can easily run a new line to the DSL then it shouldn't take more than an hour or two -- with the vast majority of that being running the new phone line.

Understand that you'll be w/o phone and internet service until you get it back together. That's a pretty good incentive to have it done quickly

Oh, and why don't you like cordless phones? The only corded phones we have are for emergency purposes only (e.g. -- power loss). I just make sure not to buy any 2.4 GHz ones to avoid problems w/ the wireless network. The 900 MHz phones are getting hard to find now, but the 5.4 GHz ones are getting awfully cheap (just have to make sure it's 5.4 GHz only or 5.4G/900M and not 5.4/2.4).

The telco here sends your house the data+phone signal by default and you just put filters onto each of your phones. Thats pretty simple IMO, and even if you use an unfiltered phone your not dead in the water.

It's simple to do (in theory), but a pain to maintain; doubly so if you have LOTS of phones.

I live in a house with others. Total, there are 5 of us in a big house. Because we don't like cordless, there are like 7+ phones in the house. We had some older people living there at one point, so they wanted a phone in every room in case of emergency. Now, we're all used to having them there.

Now, as someone else has stated, the filters stop working after a while. I don't know why, but they do. We've had to replace all of ours at some point because they stopped working. At one point, we even had to hunt down the broken one by tial-and-error.

Meanwhile, when we have guests or whatever, someone (either an occupany or guest) almost always disconnects a phone and reconnects it later, and 3 times out of 5 someone will forgot to put the filter back.

In any sense, it's sort of a pain to deal with. Splitting it once in the beginning (as someone else already mentioned) is a much nicer way to handle it. If I wasn't bogged down with 3 other home improvement projects, I'd go into the attic and do it myself. I guess I'll worry about it next year.

but in the end, I believe the genome mapping to be incredibly positive.
eh, i think you forget basic human nature. Like every other technology, gene programming will be used for little more than to enhance crudeness. (hm, an oxymoron?)

the original visions for TV, internet and modern pharmaceuticals all degenerated into reality shows, pr0n and 3-day-boner pills.

Years ago working at a game company we got a demo prototype for one of the first voice synthesis units, a couple thousand $$$ chunk of hardware that could supposedly be used to "aid the blind" etc. The dept manager grabbed it and spent the day getting it to recite...
a Shakespeare sonnet? no...
an inspiring Bible verse? no...
a charming childrens nursurey rhyme? no...

he spent the day keying in hex opcodes on a keypad to get it to say:
"i need a woman to squat on my face"

So, Human Genome programming?
Rather than "Freedom from Multiple Sclerosis" or "A Cure For Cancer", what we'll produce will be gene mods for a 10 foot shlong and nipple propellers, or something equally Noble and socially redeeming.
