Out of the Blue

It is with regrets that I return the monstrous Hemi Ram truck to the rent a monstrous vehicle place... that certainly is a fun truck to drive, and as much as its macho look can be said to be overdone, it really does make you feel a bit safer on the road when people are less willing to cut you off... it's just too bad it's at the expense of everyone else feeling safer. Anyway, as tempting as owning a truck as cool as that may be, I have gas-guzzler guilt already, and my goal is to someday manage to spend less time at the pumps, rather than more.

I hate tipping a bartender for twisting the cap off my beer or opening a can.

You goof.

Next time you go into a really crowded bar tip the bartender heavily for your first round. I'm talking like $5 for two $4 beers.

Then watch the guy trip ALL OVER HIMSELF trying to help you with the following rounds. Make an impression and you are sure to get served quickly.

If you don't mind waiting I guess it doesn't matter. It does impress a date if all you need to do is walk to the bar and they serve you ahead of other people.

Silly kid.

Kanniball, going to a full serve gas station that doesn't have a roof in a thunder storm will make the attendant mad whether you give them 2 dollars or 0 dollars. I used to work at a gas station when I was in high school and I'd pour a good amount of the gas they paid for on the ground. They didn't notice because the parking lot would slowly flood if it was raining hard.

I hate tipping a bartender for twisting the cap off my beer or opening a can. They didn't do anything, why do they deserve a tip? I hear people say they deserve tips because they make under minimum wage but I don't really find that a good reason to tip them.

Per person, but yeah...if I spend over $30 for just ME, I'm either on vacation, or in the wrong restaurant...

That statement clarifies the issue.

edit: Does that still make me a bastard?

Not IMO.

I will tip like a maniac if the service is great. I've gone as high as 40%. Adequate service gets 20% out of me. Very rarely do I get poor service - I won't tolerate it. If I have a server that I can sense from the get-go sucks, I will either ask for another server or leave. I worked far too long with the public to tolerate that crap. I've told more than one server they were in the wrong business.

The worst part of leaving a good server a bad tip is it's next to impossible for that person to keep it from affecting their attitude. If the server is already bad and you drop a 5% tip on them...well I feel bad for the next person they take care of.

I have two friends that make a small fortune in tips. Of course, they know how to play the game.

No matter where you eat? A $3 tip can be decent if your check is $15. For anything above that...

I hope you never go to the same place twice....

Premium is NOT always the best to put in your car, often it will lower your power and gas mileage, especially in older engines; I can not stress this enough (even with new cars/Trucks/SUVís higher octane is not always better).

Except that my engine isn't an older engine:

http://www.masperformance.com/390_350.htm

Actually my gas mileage shouldn't be *too* horrible given that the engine is new, tuned at the builders' shop, and I'm adding an MSD spark box (spark is hotter to burn the fuel better for more power and less wasted gas). But it's still a 3500+ pound car, 5.7-liter engine with a 4-barrel dual-feed carburetor and I don't drive slowly...

I know it's gonna be a loooong winter...

My favorite movie quote on tipping:

So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice.

Just put in what the manufacturer recommends and you'll usually do OK. I used to have to run a tank of Premium through my 82 Firebird once in a while to keep it running well. After a while on regular unleaded, it would be harder to start and run worse. A tank of Premium helped it out quite a bit.

If you think trucks are bad on gas, try driving a hot rod. I'm not going to be able to put anything less than Premium unleaded in my car once it's together and on the road.

On the positive side, I'll only be driving the car in the summer. On the negative side, there are lots of cruise nights in this area - one just about every day of the week. On the positive side, lots of women attend them. On the negative side, most of the time they're looking at the bikes. On the positive side, there aren't any bikes when it's wet out. On the negative side, there aren't any cruises open either. And on the negative negative side, there's been more days of rain this year then there have been sunny days.

But on the positive side, hot rods are fun.

Firstly, I'm a generous tip'per. When at a restaurant, I'll pay 20% on average, 25% if service was GREAT, and 15% if the waiter/waitress was an ass that didn't do their job.

I generally just tip a flat $3-$4...

...about Led Zeppelin being nothing but no good satan worshiping music. It relies entirely on how it's sung, as it's not really the words as much as it is the emphasis put on certain parts of them. Just as a test I sung it and then reversed it, and you'd really being stretching things a little to make out those specific words, or any for that matter.

Actually, I think I like the sound better backwards.

I usually tip 15%-20% for reasonable service but I've gone as low as a quarter for bad service. For cheaper restaurants I got for the 20%, but I tend to go lower at pricier restaurants. Why should waiter X at Le Fancy Shmancy Restaurant get 20$ (for a 100$ bill) when waiter Y at Bennigans is getting 4$ (for a 20$ bill) for the exact same effort?
