DOOM 3 Movie Update

Variety (thanks GameGossip and Frans) has word that Universal Studios has hired Polish director Andrzej Bartkowiak (Cradle 2 the Grave) to direct the DOOM movie. Andrzej replaces Enda McCallion, "who the studio said is bowing out due to personal reasons."

the doom books were cool

They were alright. I thought the story that took place on Mars then on Earth was pretty damn decent, what with the descriptions and the atmosphere, but I thought the rest of the storyline took a major dive after that.

Special sneak peek at the Doom 3 script! From Page 47:

Int. Corridor - Night

The marine is pinned down by enemy zombie fire. He ducks behind a smoking computer bank. Checks his rifle. Low on ammo. He grimaces. Closer and closer comes the SNARLING of the approaching monsters.

I've got a draft of the Doom script. Hopefully it's gone through some rewrites, because the version I have is PAINFULLY bad.

Did they print the script onto toilet paper? They might as well, because after Hollywood gets done wiping its ass with it, this movie will end up in the toilet just like the rest of the movies made from video games.

Well, I wouldn't worry too much... A good popcorn action movie doesn't need much of a story. On the other hand, it would be nice if they commissioned a rewrite with this concept: Action packed and scary as hell... Think the Exorcist, with guns

Anyone know if The Rock is still attached to this movie?

Directing is for the actors.. just about everything else you see is the cinimatographers job

That's a false statement if there ever was one. The cinematographer's job is to implement the director's vision for the camerawork for individual shots and scenes. That's not to say that the cinematographer has no input in how the different shots are done, he often will give suggestions about how to improve upon what the Director is trying to acheive, but it's the Director's vision you see not the cinematographers.

it was a female marine...just as much of a badass as he was.

Something like Vasquez (Aliens)?

"No, have you?"

Hoping they stick to the adult theme of the game. Whether you actually like the game or not its got loads of shit scary atmosphere and iD didn't seem to tone down the gore for the kiddies.
So, for the film I hope it carries an 18 certificate (UK - I think the equivalent for the states is R) and doesn't involve any bloody kids.

AMEN - thank goodness Lucas isn't involved.

Maybe its an empty hope, but if it could turn out more like 'The Thing' than 'Jurassic Park' then at least it may gain some credibility rather than just going for the bottom line.

Directing is for the actors.. just about everything else you see is the cinimatographers job. So no, while he did not direct the movie, he still played a huge role. Go check IMDB.com on how many huge name directors worked as a cinimatographer before they directed any flicks. You'll be quite suprised.

FYI if this guy is behind it I think it'll be a good movie. Maybe not great, few action flicks are, but I wouldn't discount it or him before we even see a touch of the actual movie.

Reply to #11:

They used semi-FPS view in the movie ALI, and it was VERY good. Really depends how well they make it, "camera on the shoulder" or "camera glasses" sort of thing, and if they add some blur and fast movement it might be cool.

Anyhoo, my favorite for the main marine would be Jet Li, have him walk around with l33t kung fu, poor english, slow motion and not using weapons. /end sarcasm.

Thirteen Days
Lethal Weapon 4 (not as great as the first 2 but still good)
US Marshals
The Devil's Advocate <-- KICK ASS movie
Species
Falling Down <-- I know several people who call this there all time favorite movie
Terms of Endearment (a chick flick but a very successful one)

Yes, but he didn't direct any of those. Being a the cinemtographer on a film and being the director of a film are not the same thing.

Boy are you guys jaded
I can't deny that one

Boy are you guys jaded. Check his IMDB info

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005647/

He's been behind a rather large number of highly successful films of a wide variety. Cradle 2 the Grave wasn't all that great but some of these films poeple remember as one of their favorites.

Hell the one that is bowing out isn't even listed in IMDB. He might be good but he more likely is new to the business with out a single major title under his belt.

Note that the script that was released is several years old. I don't know who wrote it but it was indeed bad. This guys got like 30 movies under his belt, I'm sure he'll hire a producer that can can it and have it rewritten or have major changes. Hopefully they announce the producer to the movie soon.

At one point the script calls for us to be looking through the hero's eyes. That is, the camera has an FPS view during an action sequence.

I don't know if they'll put him in the film...in the script, one of the scientist's names is Dr. Carmack. I think that reference is as close as he's going to get.

Oh, and at one point a marine picks up the (clearly-marked) BFG, and another guys actually says, "jeez, that's a big f*cking gun."

<slaps forehead>

Who writes this stuff?
