TA/ TA:CC was the biggest and best move ahead in RTS since Dune2 (ie the first RTS ever). TA:K went backwards with the maps, making them simple (3 or 4 "heights") but easy to download (20 seconds insted of an hour) which was it's lifeblood. And the units were that much better, more sides and so on.
TA:K had boneyards which was a community of gamers I've seen since, without going into fulltime online games like Shattered galaxy. (nexon.com)

On the demo, I'm still downloading it, but I've waited a long time for a decent PC version of 40k so fingers are crossed...

I just installed and uninstalled Dawn of War.

I'm sorry, but I never uninstalled a game so fast in my life.

I SO wanted it to be cool, but the zoom was horrible. I love the War Hammer universe. I love RTS.

But, WTF! I can zoom in to see the hairs on their pinky-toe, but I can't zoom out worth a damn.

Not only that, but the mouse controls are horrible.

Ground Control II appears to almost have a similar rendering engine, but it does both of these things pretty well.

If they ever increase the ZOOM-OUT distance, and fix the UI, I'll give it another look.

As for total annihilation, that still takes the #1 spot in all time best RTS games. I wish they'd remake it but they'd probably just screw it up...

I believe Chris Taylor and his new development studio are working on a spiritual successor to TA. But they are keeping it hush-hush for now and will show something closer to launch (the way it should be!).

People who didn't like it, I believe, are looking for flashy graphics..

It had flashy graphics for its time.. at least as far as I remember. It seemed flashy to me. heh The 3 dimensional units were cool too.

May be once the game comes down to the $9.99 or lower price I might consider it, but not for $50.

Who sells it for $50? It's $37.90 on Gogamer now, but they probably will have a sale on it soon after it is released as they did with Doom 3 and other games. I enjoy this almost as much as the last Relic game I played; Homeworld 2.

Have to say that intro movie was well worth the download. I haven't really tested the gameplay yet, I was in the beta and already have the full ver pre ordered, so it's not that important but that movie needs to be posted on the internet, it's the best intro movie I can remember seeing in a LONG time. SO SWEET.

Radar and Artillery were simply awesome, not to mention the fact that you could have complete armies of land, sea and air units, and they continually added more units/structures to the game off the website. Plus each vehicle destroyed left permanent debrie that could be collected or destroyed. And the terrain was actually part of the game, there was elevation that affected trajectory,(artillery would hit mountains instead of the target), god I could go on for an hour. The simple fact is, it was a perfect RTS. People who didn't like it, I believe, are looking for flashy graphics as in rise of nations and command and conquer. TA put an RTS on the board that didn't focus on graphics and flashy things, it was brutal combat. Massive air wars with sea battles and huge armies moving around on land. Going to go day dream about playing that game... There was recently a total annihilation mod for UT2K4 but it wasn't that good, very imcomplete, but had many of the units and structures in it, hopefully the author will continue to develop it, I'd really like to see a ver I can still play.

Rise of Nations is still the best RTS ever...

LOL HAHAHAHAH, AHAHAHAHHA ROFLMAO

Something funny about that? RoN uses tried and true methods in a blindingly polished product, while still bringing new ideas to the table. Other than WBC II, I see nothing wrong with that statement.

PS I always enjoyed Age of Empires more than Starcraft. That should explain it.

I can't help but be reminded of StarCraft and C&C when I play this demo--and that's a good thing. It looks good graphically, runs well, has some good gameplay features and makes me feel like I'm playing the RTS games I used to love. I'd say it's got some potential.

Well played around with the demo briefly last night, and have to say there was nothing spectacular that would convince me to buy this game. May be once the game comes down to the $9.99 or lower price I might consider it, but not for $50.

I just used the intelipoint driver custom program settings option to set the side buttons to alt for w40k.exe.

Ah! That's a good idea. Only problem is I have a Logitech mouse and it doesn't seem to have those options. Hmm..

Edit: Oops, have to close the quote correctly..

I think the surprise was the intro movie. As for Termies, they aren't in the demo.

Huh, wish there was a way to change the camera rotation from Alt to the middle mouse button.. that's the one I am used to. I checked in the KEYDEFAULTS and didn't see the camera rotation command in there..

so whats the surprise in the demo?

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. I suppose the surprise was the intro vid as Snoop said.. although I normally expect some kind of intro even with demos.

I never understood the awe people have for Total Annihilation. It was good sure. Not that good.

"Total Annihilation" was great... for the time, kind of like "Command and Conquer" (the original). Both games KICKED A$$, but we've passed them in so many ways. We have better UI, better 3d terrain, better AI, etc. But the games were fun, and that's what's important. The atmosphere environment in both were great. The story in C&C was awesome. The gameplay in TA rocked. But, looking back at it, some the the elements need updating to make the games modern enough for us to be able to play them for any length of time. FOR GODS SAKE, WHY DIDN'T C&C SUPPORT THE 2ND MOUSE BUTTON!

The early RTS game defined the genre. Now, many of the games try to mimic what the originals accomplished, and just don't hit the mark. Some come close, and others aren't anywhere near the ballpark. To these companies, it's all about the glitz and "hip" factor.

I occassionally dust off the CDs to play for about an hour once a year, but then I move on. I wish they rereleased the classics with a more modern UI.

I'm kind of looking forward to WarHammer, but I'm going to wait a little. I've got way too many things on my plate, and too many games in my future.

Hopefully the user reviews will persuade me it's the must-have RTS game of the season.

It took a minute or so for me.

no, its hangs forever

Did you try re-downloading it? ..maybe from another mirror. It didn't pause at all for me. Install took less than a minute.

Right now I want to buy both. But $100 is a lot of money.

You can get them both from GoGamer for $80 with $6 shipping.. and you could add a 3rd cheap game and get Cold Zero for free with the same shipping cost.

It is a good game... Whether it's a great game remains to be seen, but the initial impression is promising.

Oh and the intro is simply amazing, worth the download in itself.
